.SYNOPSIS...Warmest temperatures of the week are expected Tuesday
afternoon. A cooling trend for temperatures can be expected into the
end of the week. Winds will stay onshore and breezy, while each
night can expect a return of stratus clouds with a gradually
deepening marine layer.

.DISCUSSION...as of 01:31 PM PDT Tuesday...Warmer temperatures
are forecast for this Tuesday afternoon. An approximate 596 dm
ridge at 500 mb has kept a dry airmass aloft and will increase
temperatures. Temperatures will remain in the 60s to low 70s
closer to the coastline and bay shorelines, but 80s and 90s are
forecast inland, with isolated low-100s in traditional hotter and
drier inland locations of the North Bay Mountains, East Bay Hills,
and Southern Monterey County.
That ridge centered over Southern Nevada will slowly weaken and
meridionally contort as an upper level trough moves toward the
Northern California coastline late Tuesday evening and into
Wednesday morning. As the trough approaches, the marine layer will
deepen and likely increase the height of cloud cover. But the
marine layer will remain firmly in place through the end of the
week. The trough will push ocean moisture into and up the coastal
mountain ranges, increasing humidity values ahead of the trough.
The NAM is projecting an increase in precipitation probabilities.
A slight chance for patchy drizzle along the immediate coastline
for Wednesday morning, with a better chance for drizzle is
possible for Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning. It was
decided to hold off on increasing QPF forecast values for
Thursday morning at this time, but would not be surprised if a few
hundredths fell in coastal areas which could leave for a few wet
areas on the roadways. If greater confidence increases, QPF
values will be bumped up.
Winds are already onshore and will continue doing so. However,
the pressure gradient will tighten which will make for an increase
in winds aloft. At this time, it will be breezy each afternoon,
but best chances for stronger winds will be aloft. Friday looks to
have the best opportunity for some winds mixing down, as ensemble
models show KSFO having wind gusts between 25 to 30 mph, but that
is for a traditional windy location as the winds funnel through
the San Bruno Gap. With the deeper marine layer and the winds
being onshore, there are no fire concerns at this time. Lastly,
the trough will help break down that ridge and bring cooler
temperatures to the area through Friday. Temperatures along the
coast will stay in the 60s, as more 70s and 80s can be expected
inland.
By Saturday, the Euro and GFS models expect the trough to move east-
northeast over the intermountain west. In its wake, will be more
zonal wind flow aloft. This will leave the marine layer around the
Bay Area and the Central Coast, but also nudge temperatures upwards
a few degrees as a weak localized ridge tries to develop over
Southern California. However, the impacts will be brief as ensemble
models are thinking the next trough will move southward down the
Pacific coast from the Gulf of Alaska early next week. For now it
will move over the Pacific Northwest around the Washington/Oregon
border and likely not directly impact the Bay Area. While there is
still plenty of time for models to adjust, early August looks to be
fairly mild with onshore winds and a marine layer firmly in place.

.AVIATION...as of 10:44 AM PDT Tuesday...For the 18z TAFs. Stratus
has been retreating over the last few hours, leading to
widespread VFR before noon. Winds will increase into the afternoon
leading to mild to breezy conditions. Expect widespread VFR to
last until the evening, when Monterey Bay terminals begin to fall
into IFR/LIFR, will all but the more interior areas seeing lowered
CIGs into the night. Cloud cover looks to thin at a fair rate
Wednesday morning, with most terminals going back to VFR in the
mid to late morning.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR until the late night. Expect breezy to
gusty west- northwesterly winds peaking around 16 kts with 20 kt
gusts this afternoon. Winds will reduce into the evening, but will
remain mild to moderate through the night. Stratus will filter
into the SF Bay after nightfall, filling over OAK but taking time
to fill in over SFO. OAK looks to fall to IFR around 04z, but SFO
looks to hold off until around 09z. IFR continues until the mid to
late morning Wednesday, leading into another VFR afternoon with
breezy and gusty winds.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...VFR with moderate to breezy westerly winds until
the late evening. Expect a reduction in winds as stratus returns,
and terminals fall to IFR. in the late night MRY looks to fall to
LIFR with weak and variable winds. These winds will remain weak
and variable through Wednesday morning, but will increase into the
afternoon. Cloud cover looks to thin again mid to late Wednesday
morning, leading to another afternoon of VFR.

will continue for the coastal waters. Expect locally breezy
conditions this afternoon and evening for the Golden Gate gap and
into the Delta today, as well as along the immediate coast around
the typical coastal jet locations. Northwest winds will gradually
increase mid to late week, particularly over the outer waters.
