.SYNOPSIS...Clouds currently blanketing the Bay Area and Central
Coast will recede to the ocean on Sunday afternoon with temperatures
in the 70s and 80s, cooler at the coast. Clouds are expected to move
back in after sunset. Little change in the day to day weather
pattern as temperatures remain mild and around seasonal norms into
mid week. High pressure over the Four Corners shifts west, leading
to warming temperatures into next weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:25 AM PDT Sunday...PLenty of drizzle along
the coastal regions has left up to several hundredths of
precipitation in rain gauges from the Monterey County coastline to
the Bay Area and up into Sonoma County. Satellite imagery shows
that the marine stratus clouds are beginning to recede back to the
coastline to make way for sunnier skies this afternoon. No
updates to the forecast at this time, but wishing everyone a very
safe Fourth of July!

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 02:59 AM PDT Sunday...Watching radar early
this morning and all the spectacle sits out east over the Sierra.
Elevated thunderstorms are producing lightning travelling from the
southeast toward Northern California. A dry air mass over the
Central Valley and onshore flow aloft will keep it away from the
Bay Area. Along the coastline, drizzle is lightly falling fairly
steadily. There is slight chance for patchy drizzle to continue
through the early morning all along the Pacific Coast.
Humidities over night are fairly decent, mostly thanks to the
onshore flow as well as an approximate 2000 ft marine layer that
has expanded into the local valleys. Most areas have a relative
humidity that is 80 to 100 percent. It is not until farther inland
East Bay, or higher elevations above 2000 feet, where dry air
resides with humidity below 60 percent. All eyes are peeled on
satellite to monitor any fire hot spots from fireworks, but are
seeing none at this time. As tomorrow is Independence Day, and dry
conditions inland will return in the afternoon, we remind all to
obey local burn and firework bans and encourage all to not be that
spark that starts a wild fire.
Outside the dry air, the forecast calls for the 4th of July to be
quite normal for the season. Cloud cover should recede back to the
coastline by 11 AM local. Higher pressure stills over the Four
Corners in the Desert southwest, keeping the extreme heat away from
the Bay Area. The lower pressure system over the Pacific will
begin to weaken on Sunday, but continually provides light to
breezy onshore winds through the day. With no major changes to the
weather pattern, temperatures will once again be around seasonal
norms, with 60s and 70s closer to the coast, with 70s and 80s
inland and only isolated areas at higher elevations reaching the
low 90s. The stratus clouds are expected to return to the Bay Area
Sunday evening which, depending on how close you are to the coast
and how early the clouds move in, could disrupt some local
fireworks celebrations. Better chances for staying clear remain
farther inland.
The aforementioned high pressure over the Four Corners remains in
place Monday and Tuesday, so similar conditions are expected with
temperatures in the 70s and 80s, and a weak SFO to ACV pressure
gradient leads to a return of marine stratus each night. Ensemble
models are showing the next movement in the ridge on Wednesday, as
it begins to back build toward Nevada, but remains around 595 dm in
height at 500 mb.
Both deterministic and ensemble models are suggesting by Friday the
high pressure will park itself over Rachel Nevada and slowly expand
outward reaching 600 dm at 500 mb. This will steadily increase 850
mb temperatures from 22 degrees celsius early in the week to 26 to
28 Celsius by Saturday. The real question becomes to what expanse
does the warming temperatures reach? While models will have higher
elevations and far interior places like Napa and Paso Robles warm up
nicely, they only depict a modest warm up for now at coastal areas,
largely in part to to persistent onshore winds. There is still a lot
to be determined, though its safe to say temperatures will have a
warming trend with a drier air mass growing by next weekend. It will
be the timing, extent and impacts that still need to be flushed out
in later model runs.

imagery shows low clouds slowly dissipating across the region with
most sites currently experiencing VFR conditions. Expect VFR

this evening and move inland overnight with MVFR/IFR cigs
prevailing. Patchy coastal fog and drizzle is forecast to return
again late tonight into tomorrow morning. Similar return/clearing
times as today. Onshore winds this afternoon 10-15 kt with local
gusts to around 20 kt.
