the start of next week with continued near normal temperatures and
the return of a well defined marine layer along the coast.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:30 PM PDT Saturday...Somewhat typical
summer pattern across the Bay Area and Central Coast this
Saturday. The marine layer, now around 1,200 feet in depth,
dominated the weather along the coast with temperatures generally
in the 60s while locations around the San Francisco Bay (and Santa
Cruz) warmed into the 70s and 80s. Thus, the heat remained
confined to the interior with inland valleys reaching the upper
80s to lower 90s and the region's hottest far interior locations
peaked at 105 deg F (Pinnacles National Park, Parkfield).
Meanwhile, stratus has begun it's push back inland this evening
with clouds covering much of the coastline, San Francisco and
locally inland around coastal North Bay and Monterey Bay region.
Look for clouds to spread well inland into the valleys tonight,
yet warmer and drier conditions persisting in the hills, ridges
and peaks. As mentioned below, not expecting too much change in
conditions for Sunday. However, onshore flow may spread a bit
further inland and allow for a few degrees of cooling while the
far interior remains hot. For additional details, please see the
previous forecast discussion below.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 2:32 PM PDT Saturday...The long talked
about weekend warming trend is underway. As expected, given the
lack of offshore winds were not seeing hot temps inside the Bay.
The hottest temps are already above 100 degrees for interior
Monterey and San Benito with widespread 80s and 90s for the hills
and interior valleys of the Bay Area. Meanwhile cool 60s persist
along the Highway 1 corridor with a shallow fog deck from Bodega
Bay to Pacifica and then again around Pebble Beach and Carmel Bay.
The marine layer depth is slightly higher than expected and
hovering around 1500 feet. It may compress slightly overnight but
with persistent onshore winds expect low clouds and fog to spread
locally inland once again this evening bringing some temperature
and humidity relief to the valleys.
We continue to watch a well defined upper low approach 38n/130w
that will move eastward towards Cape Mendocino on Sunday but
remain offshore. This will be close enough to keep onshore flow in
place and keep the dome of hottest air aloft just to our east.
Thus expect temperatures not to change too much for Sunday with
seasonable 70s/80s most of the Bay Area with 90s and lower 100s
for the hottest interior valleys while cool 60s should persist at
the beaches.
The upper low will shift north and rotate around the well
advertised ridge that is bringing extreme heat to the Pacific
Northwest. Meanwhile as we approach the end of the month the
Southwest Monsoon is starting to wake up. As early as Monday we
expect to see some of that moisture reach the southern Sierra.
Will have to be on the lookout by mid to late week to see if any
moisture tries to sneak towards the Central Coast as the last two
operational runs of the GFS do show some activity getting close to
interior Monterey/San Benito. Will continue to monitor that threat
but in general expect dry and seasonable weather for the Bay Area
for much of next week as we approach the 4th of July Holiday.

.AVIATION...As of 11:20 PM PDT Saturday...For the 06Z TAFs.
Satellite imagery shows stratus over much of the central CA coast.
These low clouds are giving IFR/LIFR conditions to the coastal
sites tonight. These conditions should continue to move inland,
giving the remaining sites (KSJC/KSTS/KLVK/KAPC) MVFR/IFR
conditions through Sunday morning. Patchy FG/DZ potential for
KMRY/KSNS though 15Z. SKies should lift and scatter around 16-18Z,
with later clearing at KMRY (~20Z). Onshore winds around 15kts
with gusts up to 20 in the afternoon. Winds will diminish around
05Z.
Vicinity of KSFO...IFR/LIFR ceilings will last through 16-17Z
Sunday morning. VFR conditions after 17Z, with skies continuing to
lift and clear (FEW009-015). On shore breezes will pick up in the
afternoon. Stratus should return Sunday night (~03-04Z) with
MVFR/IFR ceilings lasting through the end of the period.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...LIFR/LIFR conditions will continue
through 19-20Z. Patchy FG/DZ possible 10Z - 15Z.. Onshore winds
will pick up sunday afternoon 10-15 kt diminishing overnight.

.MARINE...as of 8:30 PM PDT Saturday...Northwest winds will
remain breezy gusty across the coastal waters through most of the
forecast period. The strongest winds are expected along the
typical coastal jet areas south of Point Arena, Pigeon Point, and
Point Sur as well as through the Golden Gate gap in the
afternoons. Occasional gale force gusts may develop along the Big
Sur coast, particularly tomorrow afternoon. These winds will
result in steepening northwest seas that are hazardous for smaller
