.SYNOPSIS...Although overall temperatures will be slightly cooler
on Tuesday, be prepared for another warm to hot day as the upper
level ridge only gradually weakens. Temperatures then trend
slightly lower through late week as onshore flow increases.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:53 PM PDT Monday...Daytime highs had quite
the range today! Coastal areas were more mild, as forecast,
ranging upper 50s to mid 70s. Farther inland is where we saw
widespread 90s to low 100s. The triple digit heat tended to occur
in the northern portions of Sonoma and Napa counties (Cloverdale,
Lake Berryessa), far East Bay (Livermore, Byron), and in the
hotter areas of San Benito & Monterey counties (Los Banos, Fort
Hunter Liggett, Pinnacles). In terms of our official climate sites,
no records were broken today despite the well above normal
temperatures. As we enter the 8 pm hour, much of our CWA is now
in the 80s or lower with just a few holdouts far inland still in
the low 90s. Thus, will let the Heat Advisory expire at 9 pm as
the peak heat of the day is winding down.
We also had some breezy and locally gusty conditions today over
higher terrain and in some of our valley locations. Most of the
gusts peaked in the 20-30 mph range with a few places gusting as
high as 35-41 mph. Mt. Diablo was our winner today at 41 mph and
we also had a spotter report gusts of 41 mph at 920 ft elevation
near Sausalito (Marin Headlands). Winds will diminish overnight,
but we should see breezy conditions again tomorrow afternoon and
early evening.
The upper level ridge will gradually weaken and eventually shift
southeastward by the end of this week. Airmass aloft was 24-25
degrees C today and will be similar or slightly cooler tomorrow
which means our daytime highs will only nudge down a few degrees
on Tuesday with additional cooling Wednesday. Overall, we expect
daytime highs to persist Wednesday through the week with near to
slightly above seasonal normals.
We should also start seeing a return of marine stratus later this
week as a trough in the Pacific NW starts to dig southward into
NorCal.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:28 PM PDT Monday...Temperatures are
rapidly warming across the interior this afternoon with widespread
90s being reported. Meanwhile, temperatures are holding in the
50s along the immediate coastline with low clouds and/or fog
covering the Big Sur coast, Monterey Bay and northward up along
the San Mateo coast. Given this, not going to see coastal areas
warm too much more this afternoon while some of the hottest
interior locations peak around 100-105 deg F. With the ridge axis
building into Northern California, the hottest temperatures are
likely to remain confined to the interior North Bay and East Bay
where a Heat Advisory remains in effect through 9 PM this evening.
Mild temperatures will also persist in the hills tonight while
lower lying areas cool in response to the marine influences.
Another warm day is on tap for Tuesday, especially across the
interior. However, the temperatures look to trend downward region-
wide as onshore flow increases. Thus, look for upper 50s to lower
70s near the coast while 90s will still be common inland. Above
average temperatures look to persist through much of the week as
high pressure aloft gradually weakens. Ensemble guidance suggests
troughing developing over the Pacific Northwest and down into
Northern California by late week. Thus, expecting a return to more
widespread night/morning clouds as the marine layer becomes better
established.

VFR except for stratus and fog /VLIFR-IFR/ with a coastally
trapped southerly wind reversal reaching San Mateo County. The
southerly wind reversal will continue moving northward overnight

afternoon and evening, coastal stratus and fog likely increasing
through the afternoon with an inland intrusion Tuesday evening
into Wednesday morning.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR, west to northwest wind 5 to 15 knots. IFR
forecast to develop Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VLIFR-IFR in stratus and fog overnight
and Tuesday morning. VFR by late Tuesday morning and afternoon.

.MARINE...as of 7:57 PM PDT Monday...Breezy northwest winds over
the northern outer waters will continue through tonight,
generating steep waves resulting in hazardous seas conditions
particularly for smaller vessels. Winds will diminish over the
outer waters Tuesday morning. Gusty onshore winds through the
Golden Gate and to the Delta through the evening and into Tuesday.
Light to moderate northwest winds mid-week with a return of
stronger northwest winds over the waters near the end of the week.
Seas remain predominately wind driven in addition to lighter
mixed northwest and southerly swells.
