Area Forecast Discussion

1123 PM PDT Wed May 19 2021

.SYNOPSIS...Breezy and gusty northwest winds will continue through
Thursday along with well below normal temperatures. A gradual
warming trend is forecast from Friday through early next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 8:59 PM PDT Wednesday...Wind advisory is in
effect for much of the region and not seeing any reason to drop
headlines. We've got blustery conditions across the Bay Area with
gusts in excess of 50 mph along the coast, Marin Hills, SFO and
out over the Altamont. Wind advisory will remain in effect through
5 am. Synoptic pattern features a well defined upper trough
currently over Oregon and dropping towards Mt Shasta overnight.
The main feature with this trough is very cold air aloft for the
second half of May. In addition at this time the SFO to Sacramento
gradient peaked above 5 mb this afternoon during peak heating
allowing for the strong onshore winds. Over the ocean the strong
winds have induced some coastal upwelling with sea surface temps
(SST) back down to a chilly 50-52 degrees. So those strong winds
feel especially cold this evening with temps in the 50s and a cold
airmass aloft.

Tomorrow morning a few furnaces may want to kick on as morning
lows will be especially chilly in the 40s with brisk onshore winds
and a fairly dry airmass. 850 mb temps will drop to as low as 2-4
celsius during the day as the main upper low drops across interior
Norcal. If you have plans to hike some of the higher hills/peaks
across the Bay Area Thursday or Friday afternoon there will be a
distinct chill to the air. Note we aren't talking about any
marine inversion layer as the cold airmass with this system has of
course scoured out the marine layer and associated low clouds.
Most of the precip with the upper low will be focused over the
Sierra. Be advised that Winter Weather Advisory is in effect with
snow levels down to lake level and possible impacts over the
trans-Sierra highways and for those with outdoor plans in the high
country. Check WFO Sacramento and Reno for the latest forecast
details and plan accordingly.

Similar to the upper low a few days ago, the models do indicate
some showers developing over Lake County on Thursday afternoon.
There is a slight chance they could drift into extreme northern
Sonoma or Napa county but that looks unlikely with any cells
falling apart as they would enter towards nightfall Thursday
evening. Daytime highs for Thursday will be cool regionwide with
highs mainly in the 60s though winds will ease through the day and
shouldn't be as strong as what we are seeing this evening.

The upper low will stay just to our east Friday into Saturday,
keeping any precip chances over the Sierra. The cold air
associated with the upper low will keep temps a few degrees below
normal Friday with a slight warming trend back closer to normal by
Saturday as the low starts to eject. In terms of weekend planning
the weather looks pretty uneventful with mostly sunny skies and
near normal temps for most of the region and no hot weather
inland.

Zonal flow early next week with a midweek shortwave staying to our
north. Not expecting any rain but no signs of any hot weather
headed our way either which may be some good news as we look for
ways to delay fire season. On that note will say the updated fuel
dryness charts have dropped back closer to normal with the recent
round of marine layer, higher RH, local drizzle and cooler temps
helping to mitigate some of the fuel dryness in the finer fuels.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:01 PM PDT Wednesday...Mostly sunny sky
conditions prevail across the entire region this afternoon with
temperatures generally a few to as much as 10 degrees cooler
compared to 24 hours ago. This is due to the dry frontal boundary
that swept through the region allowing for cooler, drier air to
advect across the region. Additionally, the surface pressure
gradient continues to tighten resulting in breezy to gusty winds.
These winds are likely to strengthen along the coast and in the
hills, ridges and peaks through tonight with gusts likely in
excess of 45 mph at times. Thus, the Wind Advisory remains in
effect for many of the aforementioned areas. Please see NPWMTR for
complete details on the advisory.

Look for breezy conditions to extended into Thursday as well with
the potential for the Wind Advisory to be extended, yet will allow
the evening/overnight shifts to monitor short-range forecast
guidance trends. Overall weather conditions on Thursday will be
similar to today as the mid/upper level trough digs southward into
northern and interior California. These breezy winds and drier
conditions will bring elevated fire concerns, however with the
absent of stronger offshore winds and/or critically low relative
humidity the threat for widespread critical fire weather conditions
appears minimal at this time.

Winds are forecast do diminish late in the week as high pressure
builds over the eastern Pacific. This should also result in a subtle
warming trend on Friday and into the upcoming weekend. Look for
widespread upper 70s to lower 80s to return by early next week.

.AVIATION...As of 11:15 PM PDT Wednesday...For the 06z TAFs. Gusty
northwesterly to westerly winds continue tonight around
KSFO/KSTS/KLVK. These winds will be slow to diminish tonight.
Elsewhere, winds will remain AOB 14kts through 15Z. LLWS will set
up for most terminals as a 35-40kt jet at 2000ft remains in tact
tonight. Skies will be mostly SKC- FEW020 with drier air in
place. Stronger westerly to northwesterly winds return tomorrow.
Winds peaking from 20Z through 04Z for most terminals. Gusts for
inland areas should see 25-30kts, and 30-35kts for coastal
terminals. Winds will be slow to calm down Thursday evening.

Vicinity of KSFO...Northwest winds will continue with strong gusts
until around 10Z tonight. Winds will slowly drop to below AWW
criteria, but could still see some isolated gusts up to 40 kts for
the next couple hours. With a stronger jet of 45kts at 2000ft
lasting through the night, LLWS could form if winds drop below
25kts, which they could from 11Z to 14Z. Skies will reamin FEW-
SCT at 015-020 through mid morning, then FEW250. Winds will pick
up quickly again tomorrow. Similar strength to the winds, maybe a
few kts weaker. Will put out an AWW for tomorrow.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VRF. Light westerly winds tonight with
skies remaining around FEW-SCT at 015-020. MVFR cigs will be
spotty at KMRY as air remains fairly dry.

.MARINE...as of 08:28 PM PDT Wednesday...Strong, gusty northwest
winds across the waters today and through the coming days. These
northwest winds will peak through the afternoon and this evening,
with infrequent to occasional storm  force gusts are possible
along the coast, and frequent higher end gale force gusts expected
across the entire waters through at  least late tomorrow. These
strong winds will generate very steep  fresh seas of up 12 to 17
feet at 8 to 10 seconds that are  hazardous, particularly for
small craft vessels which may struggle against the strong winds
and rough seas. Mixed seas will continue with a northwest swell
and a longer period southerly swell.
