What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS San Francisco Bay Area, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at May 17, 11:35 PM PDT, 3 hours 20 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, May 17, 11:35 PM PDT, 3 hours 20 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area
1135 PM PDT Mon May 17 2021

.SYNOPSIS...Slight warming is expected on Tuesday, but locally
breezy conditions will continue. A system approaching from the
northwest on Wednesday will bring gusty northwest winds from
Wednesday afternoon through Thursday, along with well below
normal temperatures. Gradual warming is forecast from Friday
through the weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...As of 9:10 PM PDT Monday...Earlier clearing today
in most areas resulted in slight warming, mainly for inland valley
locations. But widespread morning low clouds and brisk onshore
flow held temperatures anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees below
seasonal averages.

Current satellite imagery shows only areas of low clouds this
evening, in contrast to the widespread low cloud coverage over the
past few evenings. Drier air has been gradually filtering into
the boundary layer from the northwest and this process is forecast
to continue through Tuesday. Thus, expect only areas of morning
low clouds tomorrow, with widespread clearing by afternoon. More
sun, and a drier airmass, will mean slightly warmer temperatures
in most areas tomorrow, although highs are still expected to
remain slightly cooler than normal as breezy onshore conditions
persist. In fact, localized westerly wind gusts up to 40 mph are
likely tomorrow afternoon and evening in typically windy spots
like around SFO and through the Altamont Pass.

Gusty winds will be the primary weather impact over the next three
days. An upper trough, currently located off the coast of the
Pacific Northwest, is forecast to dig south into northern
California by late Wednesday. This trough will trigger even
stronger west to northwest winds by Wednesday afternoon and
evening, when gusts up to 50 mph are possible near the coast and
locally in the hills. Wednesday afternoon and evening is expected
to be the time frame of strongest winds this week, and Wind
Advisories may be needed then, especially for coastal areas. The
upper trough will bring with it an unseasonably cold airmass and
temperatures will cool well below normal once again on Wednesday
and remain that way into Thursday. Inland temperatures will be as
much as 15 degrees below seasonal averages on Wednesday and
Thursday. Cold air aloft and good low level mixing will mean lack
of a marine layer and thus only minimal coastal low clouds on
Wednesday and Thursday. So at least coastal areas will finally
see an end to the perpetual "May Gray."

Breezy to locally windy conditions will persist on into Thursday
as the upper trough continues to dig south along the CA/NV border,
but models suggest winds won't be quite as strong on Thursday
compared to Wednesday.

Precipitation with this incoming cold weather system is expected
to be confined to the Sierra Nevada and higher mountains of
northern California, although an isolated shower can't be ruled
out across the northern and eastern edges of our forecast area in
the Thursday-Thursday night time frame.

Winds will subside late in the work week and temperatures will
gradually warm over the weekend as the trough begins to move to
the east.

&&

.AVIATION...As of 11:30 AM PDT Monday...For the 06z TAFs. VFR
with MVFR. Drier air has moved in, scattering out skies for the
North Bay terminals. This more dry air should prevent FG/BR
despite the SKC skies tonight and calm winds. MVFR ceilings will
be found over KOAK as well as KSNS/KMRY tonight, with stratus
hanging over the East Bay and Monterey Peninsula through tomorrow
morning. Moderate LLWS for North Bay terminals as winds are calm
tonight. Gusty northwest winds most of Tuesday, lasting into
Tuesday night.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with skies FEW-SCT at 009-015 lasting
through 18Z with SCT015 hanging around for most of Tuesday. West
winds become mild early Tuesday morning but become gusty again in
the late morning. Expect the VFR to continue into Tuesday
afternoon.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...MVFR. Winds stay westerly and mild
overnight and into Tuesday morning. VFR returns by Tuesday morning
as cloud cover thins. Westerly winds look to strengthen into that
afternoon with around 20 kt gusts possible.

&&

.MARINE...as of 8:01 PM PDT Monday...Northwest winds will
increase across the coastal waters tonight ahead of an approaching
cold front. Locally stronger winds will be possible near Point
Reyes and south of Point Sur by Tuesday. These winds will generate
steep fresh swell resulting in hazardous seas conditions,
particularly for smaller vessels. Mixed seas will continue with a
moderate northwest swell and a longer period southerly swell.
