People most vulnerable include those who spend extended periods outdoors, those without air conditioning, young children, the elderly, and those with chronic illness. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The hottest temperatures are expected in the mountains of San Benito and Monterey counties, the far southern end of the Salinas Valley, and the mountains of northeastern Napa and Sonoma counties. .SYNOPSIS...A warming and drying trend will begin today across
the region with peak heating likely this upcoming weekend. The
hottest, most dangerous temperatures look to occur over the
interior as onshore flow keeps conditions cooler near the
coast/bays.

.DISCUSSION...as of 03:30 AM PDT Thursday...High pressure over
the Desert Southwest and Four Corners continues to build westward
toward the California Coast this morning. As a result, the marine
layer has compressed to between 1,200-1,500 ft in depth this
morning with less inland intrusion of the marine stratus.
Temperatures so far this morning are similar to previous days,
generally in the 50s for most urban areas. However, above the
marine layer, temperatures are 5 to as much as 15 deg warmer
compared to 24 hours ago as the air mass aloft rapidly warms.
The region-wide warming trend will be felt today, especially across
the interior. Looking for widespread 80s/90s for most locations away
from the coast/bays with the warmest interior locations reaching
between 100-105 deg F. Meanwhile, onshore flow and the shallow
marine layer will keep conditions in the 60s/70s for locations
directly impacted by the onshore flow off of the coast and bays. The
warming trend will then continue on Friday and into the upcoming
weekend as 850mb temperatures warm to between 26-29 deg C. Thus,
look for a few degrees of warming for most locations on Friday with
temperatures likely to peak on Saturday and/or Sunday. At this
point, the region's warmest interior locations will likely peak
between 105-110 deg. With these very hot afternoon temperatures and
overnight lows in the hills/mountains only dropping into the mid
70s/80s, the Excessive Heat Watch has been upgraded to an Excessive
Heat Warning now beginning Friday afternoon. Currently, the North
Bay Mountains/Hills (especially interior areas away from the coastal
range), East Bay Hills/Mountains and Valleys (recently added),
southern Salinas Valley, and interior Monterey/San Benito County are
included in the warning. It is worth noting that many of these
valley locations will see a bit better relief at night as
temperatures cool into the 60s. Regardless, the pattern aloft
appears to be similar to the June 17th and 18th heat wave which
resulted in afternoon temperatures in the 105-110+ deg F range for
many of these same areas. Temperatures this warm will result in high
to very high Heat Risks. Onshore flow is forecast to persist
throughout this event and help hold temperatures down near the
coast/bays. However, as with the mid-June event, heating did expand
to the San Francisco Bay Shoreline with widespread upper 80s to mid
90s reported. Thus, will need to monitor conditions closely in the
coming days as minor fluctuations of the onshore flow can greatly
impact heating potential. With more pleasant temperatures
anticipated near the coast this weekend, folks flocking to the
beaches/coast for relief are reminded of the dangers of our nearly
year-round risk of rip currents and cold ocean waters.
While some cooling is likely on Sunday, forecast ensembles indicate
temperatures will remain 10-15 deg F above seasonal averages
across the interior. Gradual cooling is then expected through
early next week as the ridge aloft weakens and zonal flow develops
in response to an upper level low dropping down the coast of
British Columbia. This cooling will likely be enough to reduce the
Heat Risks across our region with more pronounced marine
influences spreading inland. Stay tuned to the latest forecast
information in the coming days and be sure to take the necessary
precautions to protect yourselves and your loved ones (including
pets) from this upcoming heat event.

morning moving inland on onshore winds. High resolution models
including href are under-forecasting boundary layer humidity on
the northern side of the marine layer around Point Reyes as well
as across the North Bay and East Bay and across the southern
Salinas Valley. Inland it's VFR. Clearing to VFR back to the
coastline later this morning and afternoon then patchy coastal
stratus /VLIFR-IFR/ likely tonight and Friday morning.
Vicinity of KSFO...MVFR-IFR ceiling this morning, improving to VFR
by late morning and afternoon. Onshore wind to 20 knots in the
afternoon and evening. IFR ceiling likely tonight and Friday
morning.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VLIFR-IFR in stratus, fog and patchy
light drizzle this morning. Conditions improving to MVFR-VFR by
late morning and afternoon. VLIFR-IFR likely tonight and Friday
