.SYNOPSIS...Cool to chilly mornings, mild afternoons, and dry
weather through Sunday morning. Rain returns Sunday with
scattered showers possible through Monday, along with low snow
levels and possibly thunderstorms. Dry weather appears likely on
Tuesday of next week, with rain possibly returning by the end of
next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 01:52 PM PST Saturday...Morning strato-cu did
clear back to the coast, but not completely erode. Regardless of
the inland sunshine this afternoon temperatures remained on the
cool side with highs reaching the 50s to low/mid 60s. Definitely
much cooler than yesterday, especially the N Bay where offshore
flow is lacking and temperatures dropped 5-15 degrees since then.
For tonight - expect some of the low stratus to move inland once
again as a ridge of high pressure aloft remains overhead for one
more day. Overnight clouds will limit the real cool down, but it
will still be a chilly night with some patchy frost in the inland
valleys.
The much talked about cold front that is currently upstream is
still on track to impact the Bay Area Sunday afternoon and Sunday
night. No major changes to previous forecast as both
deterministic and ensembles are in decent agreement. Onset of
precip will accompany the front initially bringing rain to the N
Bay during the afternoon. The front is then forecast to move
south and east rather quickly and be over Monterey/San Benito by
early Monday morning. The FROPA will be similar to the early March
FROPA with a marked wind shift, gusty winds, and brief heavy
rain. Some of the hi-res models and CAMs show hints of a NCFR,
which is within the realm of possibilities. Obviously if a NCFR
would develop a heightened concern for burn areas would follow
with debris flow thresholds. Confidence is low at this point, but
something we'll be monitoring closely with the FROPA. Behind the
front cold air will rapidly fill in lowering snow levels and
destabilizing the airmass late Sunday and Monday. Pretty decent
1000-500mb thickness values with cold 700mb and 500mb
temperatures. Snow levels will likely drop to the 1500-2000 foot
range. If some of the hi-res models are correct wet bulb zero
heights could allow for some local 700-1000 foot snow levels. The
cold air will be there, but the question is how much precip will
accompany the colder air. Frontal precip will also quickly turn to
showers from N to S behind the front. Regardless, still expecting
some snow over the higher terrain. One potential higher spot for
snow will be the Santa Lucia Range. Hi-res models are suggesting a
little bit of Monterey Bay effect precip through the day on
Monday. Therefore, five plus inches of snow will be possible. The
destabilized atmosphere will lead to a chance for thunderstorms
on Monday. Initial threat for thunder is over the coastal waters
then overland Monday afternoon. Similar to the last system we may
not see a lot of lightning, but just small hail with the
potential to accumulate. The cold advection behind the front will
also usher in some rather gusty winds, especially along the coast.
Current forecast will call for some 40-50 mph gusts, which is
borderline for a Wind Advisory.
Next weather impact will be temperatures Monday night. Winds are
forecast to weaken overnight with clearing skies. Decreasing
winds and clear skies will set the stage for cold temperatures by

possible across the interior. If this forecast holds true a Frost
Advisory may be needed.
Brief warming and drying trend through early Thursday before
another round of rain moves into the region. Additional rain
chances will develop late in the week and next weekend.

.AVIATION...as of 10:20 AM PST Saturday...For the 18Z TAFs. A
marine stratus deck with bases generally around 1500-1800 ft
arrived last evening and has been thinning out through the
morning per latest satellite imagery. Latest imagery shows the
extent of the marine layer beginning to pull back but still expect
to see another hour of patchy MVFR cigs for the periphery of the
Bay Area. For areas nearer to the coast, the upstream feed with a
robust onshore flow (already west winds at 10-15kt this morning)
will continue to reinforce the marine layer deck at sites such as
KSFO/KMRY/KOAK through midday, and may not even allow some sites
on the coast to clear at all today (ie near KHAF, KMRY) though
some brief clearing is forecast between 21Z-01Z. Marine layer
returns tonight but will be impacted by an approaching low
pressure system that will deepen it but limit the onshore feed
into the mid to late morning and limit its lifespan. Then, an
approaching storm system mid to late Sunday will bring increasing
high clouds, southerly winds, and rain chances towards the end of
Sunday.
Vicinity of KSFO...MVFR cigs last through approx 20Z. Winds
remain breezy at this hour and will be off the ocean through the
day, increasing up to 14-18 knots Saturday afternoon. Cloud cover
remains around the region Saturday, but mostly VFR with a brief
return to MVFR Saturday evening. Clouds should begin to scatter
into Sunday morning as winds shift to the south as the next system
approaches at the tail end of the TAF period.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...MVFR cigs will remain through much of
Saturday. Cigs should lift briefly and hover around the MVFR/VFR
level midday. Winds are light to moderate and will remain onshore
and breezy Saturday afternoon. Cigs lower once again for a return
to MVFR conditions Saturday night.

.MARINE...as of 02:37 AM PST Saturday...Moderate northwest winds
persists with stronger gusts possible along the Sonoma coastline
north of Point Reyes and along the Big Sur coastline south of
Point Sur Saturday morning. There is also a chance for stronger
winds funneling through the Golden Gate and into the north San
Francisco Bay late Saturday morning. Winds are expected to be
light and variable early Sunday morning before the next system
approaches. Winds will increase and turn to south- southwest with
a front that will bring showers and a chance of isolated
thunderstorms over the waters. Near gale force gusts are possible
along the front on Sunday afternoon and evening. A moderate
northwest swell prevails through the weekend.
