What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this gale watch went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS San Francisco Bay Area, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale watch went out at Aug 25, 5:19 PM PDT, 2 hours 17 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Aug 25, 5:19 PM PDT, 2 hours 17 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area
519 PM PDT Wed Aug 25 2021
.SYNOPSIS...A warming trend will occur across the region through
the upcoming weekend as high pressure builds aloft. The warmest
temperatures are likely to occur across the interior while onshore
flow and marine influences limit heating near the coast. A
gradual cooling trend is then expected early next week along with
continued dry weather conditions.
&&
.DISCUSSION...as of 01:55 PM PDT Wednesday...A mid/upper level
trough axis over the region continues to support a very deep
marine layer along the coast this afternoon. While cloud cover has
quickly retreated to the coastline with mostly clear conditions
inland, the Fort Ord Profiler indicates the depth of the marine
layer at around 2,000 ft. Thus, do expect low clouds to return to
the coast late this evening before spreading inland overnight.
That said, high pressure building aloft will begin to suppress the
marine layer in the coming days with less inland stratus
penetration likely.
As high pressure over the eastern Pacific and the Desert Southwest
merge over the region, 850 mb temperatures will begin to approach
and likely exceed 25 deg C by Friday and Saturday. This will result
in a robust inland warming trend with more widespread 90s to near
100 deg F likely across the interior valleys. Some of the region's
typical hot spots will likely approach 105 deg F both Friday and
Saturday afternoons. Meanwhile, locations around the San Francisco
Bay Shoreline and areas along the coast are likely to remain cooler
as the marine influence is unlikely to completely get shut down.
This will likely lead to a sharp temperature gradient with increased
Heat Risk across the far interior and above the marine inversion
while coastal areas reamin much more comfortable. Very dry
conditions will also persist above the marine inversion along with
overnight/morning temperatures remaining at or above 70 deg F
through the weekend. That said, cooling in the interior valleys
appears to limit Heat Risk mainly to the moderate levels for most
populated areas this weekend. However, will continue to monitor
heat impacts in the coming days. While brief offshore (northerly)
winds will be possible at times through the weekend across the
interior North and East Bay, wind speeds are not forecast (at this
time) to be strong enough to create critical fire weather
conditions. Will also continue to monitor for smoky/hazy conditions
this upcoming weekend as winds aloft turn more northerly and
potentially transport smoke from ongoing wildfires to our north
across the San Francisco Bay Area.
Temperatures look to remain 5 to 10 deg F above seasonal averages
across the interior on Sunday, yet some cooling is forecast to begin
as onshore flow increases. A more gradual, region-wide cooling trend
is forecast for early next week as troughing develops along the West
Coast. This should bring temperatures back down to near seasonal
averages by the middle of next week.
&&
.AVIATION...As of 05:21 PM PDT Wednesday...For the 00z TAFs.
GOES- WEST water vapor imagery depicts a drier air mass that has
moved in as the axis of a mid-level low moves inland. Some of that
dry air has mixed down to the surface, resulting in a stratus
deck that is struggling to maintain its scope. Latest coastal
profilers have picked up on the sharp decline of the marine layer
depth, which is currently hovering between 1200-1500 ft. While
stratification is still expected along portions of the immediate
coast tonight, are on track for patchy stratus (MVFR) over the
bays. Will begin to see some low cigs start to develop by 9Z along
portions of SF Bay, but given the dry air entrainment at the
surface, have low confidence in MVFR/IFR cigs developing at
STS/APC/SFO. Nonetheless, have added TEMPOs to account for the
patchy nature of the overnight marine environment. Cigs that do
develop overnight will quickly mix out starting around 16Z
tomorrow as moderate onshore flow (10-15kt) streams in to the Bay
and Coastal terminals. As for more inland terminals (e.g.
CCR/LVK/SJC), on track for VFR through the rest of the TAF period.
Surface smoke continues to be picked up at some of the inland
East Bay terminals (e.g.) but will subside as onshore flow across
the region follows the inland trajectory of the low pressure,
steering smoke away from the terminals.
Vicinity of KSFO...Breezy onshore winds will gradually weaken over
through 3Z. Uncertainty lies in the return of MVFR ceilings
tonight, which is reflected by the TEMPO. Nonetheless, any cigs
that do develop will mix out early (16-17Z) as onshore winds
become breezy once again Thursday afternoon.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...Breezy onshore winds this afternoon will gradually
weaken by 3Z. Moderate confidence skies will fill in around
02-03Z this evening, with wiggle room time of one to two hours
given the dry air entrainment from the approaching low pressure
system. MVFR/IFR skies will last through 18-19Z with models and
ensembles leaning towards some clearing for tomorrow afternoon as
the axis of the low gradually exits the region.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...as of 4:15 am Wednesday...Deep marine layer the
last several days has had an impact on fine fuels with lower
elevations now reporting fuels near normal for seasonal dryness.
Even the hills have dropped to around the 90-95th percentile after
reporting values above the 97th percentile for much of the month.
As early as tonight we'll see some light offshore winds in the hills
of the Los Padres NF with little or no humidity recovery. By
Thursday expect to see much poorer RH recovery in the hills as
inland areas warm up and the marine layer compresses. Friday and
Saturday 90s to lower 100s will become more widespread for the
interior areas. Biggest impacts on those nights will be the drying
in the hills with poor RH recovery, meaning the lack of the marine
influence will cause the ERC values to start trending higher. Early
Friday morning and then again Saturday morning expect to see some
localized North winds in the Napa hills and around Mt Saint Helena.
Not widespread enough to be concerned about Red Flags but a noted
change nonetheless. Smoke models keep mainly hazy skies over the Bay
Area through Thursday. By Friday and Saturday the building high and
associated light north winds could bring smoke from the Dixie,
Monument and Caldor fires back over the Bay Area. This may actually
keep temperatures slightly cooler than if we had full sunshine. Next
break down of the upper ridge occurs as early as Monday/Tuesday of
next week but of more concern for the ongoing fires across Norcal.
Will be watching the tropical activity coming up west of Baja next
week as climatology now favors possible intrusions into the Central
Coast but latest model solutions keep any moisture over far SoCal.
&&
.MARINE...as of 04:40 PM PDT Wednesday...A slow start to the
breezy winds this afternoon. Observations show calm northwest
winds over the central and southern outer waters. Stronger winds
this evening over the northern waters and the coastal waters down
the Big Sur coast. Winds will strengthen over all of the outer
waters early Thursday morning and last through the end of the
week. These winds can generate steep waves and result in
hazardous seas conditions, particularly for smaller vessels. Wind
driven seas with a short period around 8 to 10 seconds have a
lighter, longer period southerly swell embedded in it.
