...Heavy snow and blowing snow over Lookout, Lolo and Marias pass
through Sunday morning...
.DISCUSSION...A strong 120-140 knot jet stream will linger over
the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies through Sunday. Plenty
of available moisture with these winds are favorable ingredients
for significant orographic lift resulting in heavy snow.
Significant accumulating snows are expected over a 24-36 hour
period, well into Sunday. Snow rates of 1-2" at times will occur
over Lookout, Lolo and Marias passes. Strong winds gusting 30-50
mph combined with snow will produce considerable blowing/drifting
snow, especially over Marias pass.
Travel may become dangerous over these passes through Sunday
morning. If you do travel over passes this weekend, remember to
pack emergency food, water, and a blanket in case your route of
choice suddenly becomes impassible.
Gusty winds are expected across valley locations in the Northern
Rockies today. The Camas Prairie of Idaho, including Grangeville,
will receive gusty south winds gusting to 50 mph and brief periods
of snow resulting in blowing/drifting snow.
Lesser wind gusts are expected across valleys of western Montana.
Periods of snow is expected late this morning through Sunday
morning however less than 2 inches is expected over the 24 hour
period.
An unsettled and wet weather pattern will continue next week.
Periods of snow will continue to increase mountain snow pack.

.AVIATION...West to southwest winds will increase at all Terminals
this morning and persist through 12/0200z. Gusts up to 60 mph are
expected across the higher elevations and mountains. Expect
periods of strong low level wind shear across area valleys.
Mountain obscurations from snow are likely in the vicinity of all
terminals through Sunday morning. Light snow will develop and
impact KMSO and KGPI after 11/1900z through 12/1500z.
