.DISCUSSION...A much colder airmass is working its way south
through the Flathead and Swan Valleys, past Lincoln on MT-200, and
through Helena on the doorstep of McDonald Pass. How far west and
south this airmass moves by daybreak is in question (likely not
making it to the Missoula Valley), however, expect a cold start
for much of Western Montana with icy roadways from overnight snow
showers. By 1:30 AM MST, most of the snow shower activity is south
and east of Missoula but any location this cold airmass pushes
through should expect a brief but heavy snow shower.

Friday will be another cold day with teens to low 20s widespread
in W. Montana and upper 20s to 40s in North-Central Idaho. Weak
high pressure will dominate both Friday and Saturday. By Saturday,
a strong southerly gradient develops and depending on how strong
the crust of snow is in the Camas Prairie, there may be blowing
of snow across roadways. For the rest of the area with southerly
winds there will be a warm up into the upper 20s and 30s. Some of
the smaller valleys may hold onto their cold pools and not realize
the forecasted high temperature.

Beginning Saturday afternoon the forecast has many question marks,
however the potential impacts are significant enough to warrant
the discussion now while confidence is still low.

The big picture will be a ridge developing in Alaska, strong
enough to push very cold air south. At the same time a strong low
pressure system will develop off the west coast and potentially
cut off. Moist westerly flow should develop into the Northern
Rockies by late weekend, which may initially bring in warm air
aloft. Confidence is increasing that an Arctic airmass will push
into Western Montana and become stalled. It will be where and if
the moist westerly flow encounters the stalled Arctic airmass that
a prolonged snow event may develop.

Currently, there is confidence that moderate to heavy snow will
affect both Marias and Lookout Passes during Sunday and possibly
into Monday. On Sunday, rates of snowfall may make driving very
hazardous over these passes, especially during the morning at Marias
Pass if the Arctic airmass arrives as forecast.

There is less confidence for northwest Montana overnight Saturday.
The westerly push of moisture may be warm enough for valleys that
hold onto their cold pools, to have a period of wintry
precipitation. Cold air will quickly move into these areas during
the afternoon Sunday and change any wintry precipitation back to
snow. Also, most ensemble forecast systems are hinting at the
Arctic boundary stalling over Western Montana somewhere between
I-90 and northwest Montana. The potential exists for a prolonged
period of snow where the westerly flow interacts with the stalled
boundary.

Beyond Marias Pass, Lookout Pass, and higher terrain along the
Idaho and Montana borders where 1 to 2 feet of snow is possible
by Tuesday, there are too many question marks to talk total snow
elsewhere.

This active pattern is expected to continue through at least
Christmas.

.AVIATION...Most remaining snow shower activity is currently south
and east of Missoula Valley. There is a very cold airmass moving
into Western Montana, a brief but heavy snow shower may precede
this airmass with drying behind. Weak high pressure develops
Friday into Saturday. On Saturday, southerly winds develop with
the strongest in the Camas Prairie and KGIC during the afternoon
potentially causing reduced visibility in blowing snow.
