.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Key Messages:

1. Slightly milder today but still a solid 15 degrees below normal
with highs in the low/upper 50's.

2. Cold again tonight with a freeze over NE TN, SW VA, and the
mountains and frost across the Plateau, central valley, and SW NC.

Discussion:

Early This Morning...

Skies are mostly clear across the region as of 230 AM with a large
surface 1024 mb high centered over the MS and western TN Valleys.
Winds have decoupled to light and variable overnight, and with a
deep NW flow of arctic air in place across the eastern CONUS, this
has allowed temps to rapidly fall. Temps as of 230 AM range from the
upper 20's from the Plateau through NE TN, SW VA, and the mountains
to low/mid 30's elsewhere. Stay warm!

Today...

The surface high will slide over the TN Valley today and will be
centered over the S Appalachians by this evening. Aloft, the deep
mid/upper longwave trough axis will shift toward the eastern CONUS
allowing another reinforcing shortwave to drop through the backside
of the trough. This shortwave will progress from IL through the
lower OH Valley and through the central Appalachians, so it will
only graze our northern counties. RAP forecast soundings show a good
deal of dry air in the low-levels, but increasing moisture in the
700 mb layer from late morning into the afternoon will bring mid
level cloud cover into the region, especially for areas N of I-40.
These clouds and some renewed CAA behind the shortwave will keep
temps chilly today, so used the cooler CONSSHORT guidance for highs
which yields low 50's across SW VA, NE TN, and the N Plateau and
mountains with mid/upper 50's elsewhere. Soundings show mixing above
700 mb this afternoon, and with mid-level winds increasing to 30+
kts with the passage of the shortwave, should see gusts of 20-25 kts
in NE TN and SW VA this afternoon and 15-20 kts over the northern
and central valley.

Tonight...

The surface high will begin to slide E into the Carolinas overnight
with mid/upper shortwave ridging building across the TN Valley ahead
of a mid/upper trough moving through the desert SW. This will begin
the process of weak WAA aloft, and moisture will also increase in
the mid and upper levels as isentropic ascent begins to take place
from W to E. This will result in cloud cover returning for the
second half of the night after a period of clearing during the
evening. This made the low temp forecast tricky. Think that we will
see a quick drop off in temps between sunset and 07Z, then temps
will level off and perhaps rise a bit toward sunrise. This will lead
to lows in the low 30's from NE TN through SW VA and in the
mountains with 35-40 elsewhere. So, issued a Freeze Warning for the
mountains and northeastern areas with a frost advisory everywhere
else except for the far southern valley.

-Widespread rain late Friday night into Saturday night. Perhaps some
thunder mainly south Saturday.

-Possible mountain wave winds Saturday in the mountains and
foothills.

-Dry with a warming trend Sunday through Wednesday.

weak isentropic lift and moisture return will provide quite a bit of
cloudiness to start Friday, but there should be a decrease in clouds
during the day and it should stay precip free. Models continue to
show a significant short wave and a surface low tracking out of the
southern Plains and across our region Friday night/Saturday.  Models
have been struggling with exact track and strength of the surface
low, but have trended a bit weaker/further south. This keeps much of
the instability further south, however, latest runs do show at least
some weak elevated instability across mainly southern portions of
the area, so will keep the slight chance of thunder mention for the
south and Plateau Saturday afternoon. The rain will diminish from
southwest to northeast Saturday night as the system moves off to our
north and east. Total rainfall amounts are still looking to be
around to a bit above an inch across southern/central parts of the
area, with less than an inch further north.

In addition to the rain, the low level jet strengthens Saturday from
the southeast, and vertical thermal and wind profiles look quite
favorable for mountain wave enhancement of the winds at least for a
several hours on Saturday. Will add the possibility of strong winds
in the usual higher elevation and foothills in the HWO for Saturday.

Once this system exits, surface high pressure will be moving in
Sunday and then off to our east Monday.  Meanwhile, a strong upper
ridge will build over the region Sunday through Tuesday and will
shift east Wednesday.  This will provide a dry period for the Sunday
through Wednesday period with a warming trend.  We should see high
temperatures in the lower 80s across much of the valley by Tuesday
and Wednesday. Right now it looks like the next chance for rain will
arrive no sooner than Wednesday night ahead of the next approaching
front.

06Z TAF DISCUSSION.

VFR will prevail through the period with just some FEW to BKN
cloud cover developing in the 6-8 thousand foot layer this
afternoon. Light and variable winds early this morning will
become mainly westerly at 4 to 9 kts at CHA and TYS this
afternoon, and a little stronger at TRI which could see gusts to
20 kts this afternoon.
