.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 520 AM EST SAT DEC 4 2021

A strong 160-170kt upper jet is streaking from southern Manitoba
across Upper MI early this morning. With this strong upper jet, a
shortwave is passing just n of Lake Superior, and caa is underway
into the fcst area, sparking a significant increase in w to nw flow
LES over the last few hrs. 850mb temps have fallen to -10C across
eastern Lake Superior and -12C over western Lake Superior. Upstream
00z KINL sounding certainly did not look very supportive for
noteworthy LES due to a well mixed profile blo a low inversion at
850mb (temp -11C) and an overall dry column. Nonetheless, decent
LES has developed with radar reflectivities suggestive of at least
brief 1 in/hr snowfall rates with LES streaming across Baraga
County where upsloping is maximized and also into the eastern
fcst area.

850mb thermal trof with temps near -15C will move across Lake
Superior today. Given the ongoing intensity of the LES, expect 1-2
maybe locally 3 inches of snow across Baraga County/southern
Houghton County before LES diminishes later morning/early aftn under
falling inversion. Outside of that area, snow accumulations over the
w should be under an inch. To the e, LES may sneak into advy amounts
across eastern Alger/northern Schoolcraft/Luce counties with
inversion around 10kft thru at least early aftn and DGZ becoming
better positioned in convective layer. For now, have 12hr snow
accumulations in the 2-4 inch range. Over the next few hrs, will
monitor trends and reevaluate potential for increasing snow amounts
that would necessitate advy issuance.

Any lingering light LES/flurries over the w will end this evening as
high pres ridge passes and winds back southerly. LES over the e
probably won't completely shift offshore until late tonight.
Additional snow accumulations around 1 inch will be possible. Late
tonight, strengthening waa/isentropic ascent regime will spread e
toward the area in response to shortwave reaching the Dakotas.
Models have slowed the onset of the snow a little, not surprising
given the antecedent dry air mass over the area. Light snow
should develop in the 09-12z time frame generally s and w of a
line from Ontonagon to Escanaba. Maybe an inch of snow at Ironwood
by 12z.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)
Issued at 618 AM EST SAT DEC 4 2021

The extended period starts with a strengthening Alberta Clipper
progging east into our area Sunday before lifting northeastward
Monday. As the warm front of the low moves over Upper MI Sunday,
expect widespread snowfall across the area. Snow at times may be
heavy, as frontogenetical forcing and moisture from the Gulf of
Mexico parks over the region (take a look at the IVTs in the NAEFS,
for instance. Moisture transport in the 90th percentile is parking
just over or to the south of us). As the low pressure moves in
Sunday night, we are expecting to see snowfall rates beginning to
die down in the interior areas outside the NW snow belts. Whether it
is a complete stop or not of the snowfall across some of the area
Sunday night depends on where the low tracks. Most models have the
sfc low going over the western UP, although some have a secondary
low forming over Lake MI; still yet, others (such as the NAM12km),
have the low going through western Lake Superior. Should the NAM12km
solution be true, we could see a break in the snowfall Sunday night
as the dry slot moves in (some freezing drizzle may be plausible at
that point). Snowfall amounts in the NAM12km solution would be lower
than what is currently predicted in this forecast. However, should
that not be the case (which I'm somewhat confident that it won't be
considering that it is an outlier), we should see snow continue
throughout the night into Monday morning, albeit the rate of
snowfall is expected to decrease throughout the night. The one
exception would be the NW snow belts, especially in the west as the
comma head of the low passes over; could see some nice lake-
enhancement from the Keweenaw down to Ironwood, particularly Monday
morning. As the comma head of the low lifts northeastward Monday,
expect the snowfall to transition to lake-effect in the NW snow
belts. As the low continues to pull away early next week, the LES is
expected to shift to the west snow belts.

Snowfall amount-wise, we are expecting 5 to 9 inches across most of
the area from late Saturday night to Sunday night. Would not be
surprised if we saw some places get up to a foot, especially in the
areas where mesoscale banding happens. Thinking the snowfall is
going to start wet across much of the area, in particular during the
early part of the event. As the low moves through, we should see
SLRs rise from west to east Sunday into Sunday night, as temps cool
and snowflakes spend more time in the dendritic growth zone.
However, as temp profiles continue cooling behind the comma head of
the low Monday, expect SLRs to drop as dendritic growth processes
stop and sector plating begins to take over.

What all does this mean for impacts? Given breezy conditions Sunday
and Monday, we could see patchy blowing snow across the UP. Combined
with heavy snowfall rates at times, and we could see visibilities
reduced to a quarter mile or less in these areas of blowing and
heavy snow. We could also see slick road conditions, as snowfall
should start sticking across most of the area from the event onset.
Another impact is that the roads may become snow covered rather
quickly, especially in the spots where snowfall is the heaviest.
Also, given that around half a foot of snowfall is expected across
most of the area, it may be prudent to take your time shoveling any
snowfall (don't over-exert yourself). For the areas near Menominee
and Lake MI, expect some refreeze of melted snowfall, as temps
during the afternoon are expected to peak above freezing for a
little bit; therefore, those areas could be extra slick/icy.

After this system, LES in the west snow belts looks to continue
until around Wednesday, when a shortwave from the Northern Plains
Tuesday moves into Lower MI Wednesday. After that, model guidance
shows some divergence as to what will happen. However, the models do
seem to converge on the idea that a Colorado Low will form sometime
late this week/early next weekend and lift northeastward. Where the
low tracks will decide what weather we get late in the extended
period.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Sunday morning)
Issued at 658 AM EST SAT DEC 4 2021

Colder air flowing into the Upper Lakes will support lake effect
-shsn off Lake Superior into the evening hrs. However, IWD/CMX/SAW
should not be significantly impacted. Expect VFR conditions to
prevail thru much of this fcst period at IWD with only some flurries
possible into the early aftn. WNW winds will be gusty to 25-30kt
thru the morning. Winds will then become light this evening. Late
tonight, an approaching low pres system will spread -sn into western
Upper MI. Expect IWD to fall to IFR near the end of the fcst period.
At KCMX, MVFR conditions should prevail into at least the mid aftn
hrs. Expect -shsn/flurries at times with wnw winds gusting to around
35kt. Cigs will improve to VFR late aftn, if not sooner. VFR
conditions will then continue thru tonight. Winds will also become
light tonight. At SAW, VFR conditions should prevail thru the fcst
period. Expect some flurries at times for much of the day along with
gusty wnw winds to around 25kt. Winds will become light tonight.

.MARINE...(For the 4 AM Lake Superior forecast issuance)
Issued at 554 AM EST SAT DEC 4 2021

Changeable conditions across Lake Superior over the next few days
will feature 3 gale events. The first is ongoing in the wake of low
pres that is currently e of Lake Superior and quickly moving east. W
to nw gales to 40kt will continue thru the morning before
diminishing from w to e this aftn/evening. Winds will fall off to
under 20kt from w to e tonight for a short time as a high pres ridge
moves across the area. As the ridge departs and low pres approaches
from the Dakotas, se winds will quickly ramp up on Sun to 35-40kt
gales. There could be a few hrs of 40-45kt gales across portions of
central and eastern Lake Superior. Winds will diminish a little for
a time Sun night as the low pres moves across Lake Superior.
However, as the low passes, n to nw gales of 35-40kt will develop in
its wake. Winds will then diminish from w to e Mon night/Tue,
leading to winds under 20kt for Tue night/Wed.

...WIDESPREAD ACCUMULATING SNOW SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY...

A winter storm is expected to move across the Upper Great Lakes
Sunday through Monday. As this system approaches, widespread, wet
snowfall will move across Upper Michigan from west to east,
beginning early Sunday morning. There is the potential for 6
inches or more of snow by Sunday evening. Snow will diminish for a
time Sunday evening, then lake enhanced snow will develop late
Sunday night and Monday morning as blustery northwest winds
develop off of Lake Superior. An additional 6 inches or more of
snow is possible across western Upper Michigan late Sunday night
and Monday morning. The moderate snow and blustery conditions
will spread east across northern Upper Michigan by sunrise Monday,
but additional snow accumulations in that area during Monday
morning should not be as high as what occurs over western Upper
Michigan.

The snow Sunday will be wet, which will make for hazardous
driving conditions during the day Sunday. It will also be heavier,
so snow shoveling could require more effort and lead to quicker
exhaustion. Snowfall rates may be heavy at times, leading to
reduced visibilities. Late Sunday night and Monday morning, gusty
northwest winds will develop, resulting in areas of blowing snow
near Lake Superior. The Monday morning commute near Lake Superior
may be difficult, especially across western Upper Michigan.
