...Blowing Snow and Moderate Intensity Snowfall Continues Today for
Eastern Upper Michigan...
...Dangerously Cold Wind-Chills in the Interior West Half this
Morning and Again for Sunday night...

Radar has been showing a stationary wnw snow band overnight sagging
further south and inland. This is now reaching the interior areas
adjacent to the lake shoreline from Munising eastward to the Soo
Locks. Simulated hi-res reflectivity and other hi-res guidance is
forecasting surface wind convergence increasing as the day
progresses over the easter shore. This will assist with continued
w/wnw wind snow band LES showers. Accumulation is likely in the
areas along and north of Hwy M-28 for the remainder of today. Areas
previously mentioned are likely to see a general 2-4 inches. This
combined with wind gusts of 25 to 30mph onshore will create highly
varying visibility over short distances and continued blowing and
drifting snow. Satellite imagery via the nighttime microphysics
channel showing LES occurring over the Keweenaw Peninsula as of 10Z.
Do not have confidence of the moderate to heavier snow showers
persisting throughout the day enough to warrant a headline. Snow
totals look to be sub 4 inches through late afternoon. Surface wind
convergence is expected to decrease from late morning to the early
afternoon as winds become more laminar, shifting to the w and wsw
temporarily. However, a few moderate LES showers will be possible
over the Keweenaw Peninsula enough to create decreased visibility at
times, along with blowing snow.

Bitter cold temperatures present over the western half of the CWA
overnight thus far. Most of the CWA is below zero with surface
temperatures, except areas adjacent to the shoreline in the Keweenaw
Peninsula and also near Grand Marais. This combined with breezy
winds at times have made for wind chill values observed between 25F
to near 45F below zero. IWD has had multiple observations of 44F
below zero with the wind chill. The bitter cold temperatures and
current winds are making outdoor conditions favorable to potentially
get frostbite within 10 to 30 minutes. Wind chill values after 18Z
today will partially recover due to sunshine peeking through the mid
level clouds at times in the northern half of the forecast area,
with mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. Unfortunately, surface
temperatures are unlikely to go above zero for daytime maximums in
the western third of the Upper Peninsula, especially over the
interior west. Areas in the eastern half of the CWA will see
afternoon highs range from near zero to potentially 10 degrees.

As we approach the evening and overnight hours, the very cold
temperatures will continue, and so will the winds to create
dangerous conditions for those outside over a prolonged period.
Winds will shift to the w and wnw, causing LES to again approach the
Keweenaw Peninsula, as well as the extreme eastern areas of the CWA
near Grand Marais further east. Cloud cover is expected to increase
in coverage overnight due to the shift in wind directions and LES.
This may assist with keeping the surface temperatures a few degrees
warmer, but the bitter cold temperatures are here to stay through
this week.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 353 AM EST SUN FEB 7 2021

Not many changes are expected this coming week, as the core of
negative height anomalies and cold air sits over Central Canada, the
Northern Plains and the Upper Great Lakes. Deterministic runs
suggest 850mb temps will hover between -20 and -25C through the end
of the week. This will translate to surface highs largely in the
single digits and lows below zero. Wind chills are expected to flirt
with advisory criteria at night and morning hours. The persistent
cold air and ice free lake will also continue the lake effect snow
regime for the west wind snow belts through the first half of
the week and north to northwest belts by middle-late week.

Starting off on Monday and Tuesday, high pressure over the
central/upper Mississippi Valley will keep winds more westerly. But
as the day progresses on Monday, guidance suggests winds will
slightly back to more southwesterly, which would provide a break in
the showers to areas in Ontonagon County and maybe even Houghton
County by afternoon. The east may see a break entirely on Monday.
Guidance is suggesting the thermal trough over the lake could close
off into a more of a meso low feature, particularly Monday night as
the next shortwave pivots through the base of the upper level low.
This should sink the snow bands back south toward the Alger/Luce
lakeshores in the east and in the west, as far south as Ontonagon
and maybe Gogebic County again. Along the southern edge of lake
effect zone would see some of the heavier snow bands due to the
enhanced surface convergence. Daytime highs both days look to be
single digits west half and closer to 10F in the east. Overnight
lows should be below zero across the entire forecast area, with the
interior west half likely falling to -15 to -20F. Even with modest
winds, this will sink wind chill values into the -20 to -30 range
across the region at night and in the early morning. The coldest
windchills are likely in the interior west half, which at times
could flirt with wind chill warning criteria. These potentially
dangerous wind chill values could cause frost bite on exposed skin
with very little exposure times. It'll be important for folks to
limit time outside.

Wednesday, the upper level low begins transitioning westward and at
the surface, winds take on more a northwesterly and then northerly
component. This doesn't provide much of a change to our region
Wednesday and Thursday, except snow showers transitioning to these
respective snow belts. What it also does is make things interesting
on Friday, where the GFS, Euro and Canada suggest a dynamic boost
and more robust surface cyclone developing over the lake Thursday
night into Friday. At the moment, confidence in this feature is low,
but certainly something to monitor given the unstable environment
the lake is currently playing with.

VFR conditions will prevail thru the fcst period at KIWD/KSAW as
lake effect clouds/snow remain n of the terminals. At KCMX, lake
effect shsn/blsn will continue, resulting in conditions remaining at
or blo airfield land minimums thru tonight. Winds may back slightly
Mon morning, and this may be sufficient to push heavier shsn to the
n of the terminal, resulting in slight improvement of conditions.

Expect west to northwest wind gusts between 20 and 30 knots and
heavy freezing spray from Sunday to Wednesday. Winds will become 20
knots or less Wednesday night, and the heavy freezing spray looks to
end early Thursday. Winds will shift temporarily for the remainder
of Thursday to the north and northeast. By Friday, winds will begin
to back toward the northwest once again. Both Thursday and Friday
are expected to have wind gusts of 20 to 25 knots.
