...STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 AM TO 7 PM EST THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Southwest winds 25 to 35 kt with gusts up to 55 kt
  becoming west on Thursday and waves 4 to 7 ft expected.

* WHERE...Lower Entrance of Portage Canal To Huron Islands MI 
  Including Keweenaw and Huron Bays.

* WHEN...From 1 AM to 7 PM EST Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Very strong winds will cause hazardous waves which 
  could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...All vessels should remain in port or in a 
  safe harbor Wednesday night and Thursday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Mariners should prepare to remain in port Wednesday night and
Thursday. Vessels should consider adding extra mooring lines and
secure the the vessel for severe conditions before conditions
deteriorate.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 328 AM EST TUE DEC 14 2021

The upper-level pattern today will consist of a deep longwave trough
moving into the western CONUS and anomalously strong ridging
downstream of it covering much of the central and eastern CONUS.
1034 mb surface high pressure in MSAS analysis this morning centered
north of Lake Superior will drift eastward, with SE flow developing
across the area as the surface pressure gradient increases. Cirrus
will be around a lot of the day, followed by lower clouds developing
in the afternoon central and east in response to that SE flow being
upslope from Lake Michigan. Although temps aloft will be warmer than
yesterday, and highs yesterday overperformed guidance quite a bit,
today's increased cloud cover should keep temps in check. Looks for
mostly upper 30s highs, although over the western U.P. the SE flow
being downslope could help them climb back into the mid 40s.

Tonight, with SE upslope flow continuing and higher surface dew
points advecting in, expect to see low cloud cover increase,
followed by the development of areas of fog and drizzle by late
evening. Not expecting any freezing drizzle as this low ceiling and
continued moisture advection will keep temps in the mid 30s for
lows. However the fog could become dense, especially over the
central U.P. and along Lake Michigan, and could then continue into
early Wednesday morning.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)

A highly amplified upper level patterns begins the extended forecast
period with expansive ridging east of the Rockies and a deep trough
moving onto the West Coast. The West Coast trough is expected to
result in a deep (sub-980mb) surface low tracking northeast into
the Upper Great Lakes Wednesday night. Much warmer and more humid
than normal conditions are expected to produce widespread fog,
stratus, and drizzle Tuesday night into Wednesday night. Strong to
perhaps damaging westerly winds are expected to accompany the
cold front passage, especially for the Copper Country.
Temperatures fall through the day on Thursday with some lake
effect possible by Thursday night, but the LES environment isn't
particularly favorable. A series of lower amplitude troughs track
across our CWA this weekend into early next week bringing
generally light snow.

Southeasterly return flow west of a 1040 mb surface ridge ramps up
late Tuesday. NAEFS guidance indicates both precipitable water
values and 850 mb temperatures exceed the 90th percentile at 00z
Wednesday. Interaction between the anomalously warm and moist air
mass and the existing snow pack make for a tricky forecast. A sharp
boundary layer inversion with saturation up to ~5kft should lead to
widespread stratus, advection fog, and drizzle on Wednesday. A mid-
level dry layer should prevent outright rain showers, but it's
still going to be a damp and dreary day. Cloudiness inhibits
daytime heating and a strong push of warm and moist air results in
a non-diurnal temperature curve Wednesday/Wednesday night. NAEFS
guidance indicates specific humidity values exceeding CFSR
climatology, which translates to dew point temps warming to near
or above 50F and a slight chance of thunderstorms along the cold
front. Any thunderstorms that develop may transport strong 850-mb
winds down to the surface, but precipitation amounts are generally
expected to be light.

Strong to potentially damaging winds are the primary weather impacts
with the deepening low pressure system and the strongest winds
are expected to follow closely behind the cold front late
Wednesday night. Model guidance indicates an impressive pressure
fall/rise couplet with both 6-hr falls and rises around 20 mb.
Winds perpendicular to the fall/rise couplet indicate a strong
isallobaric component. The strongest wind gusts are likely to be
out of the W/WSW, which provides a long fetch over Lake Superior
for locations along the Keweenaw. One saving grace is that the
temperature gradient along the cold front isn't particularly
strong resulting in relatively shallow mixing depths that may not
fully tap into the strongest winds aloft. Even so, MSLP below CFSR
climatology indicates a potentially historic wind event with wind
damage and power outages a distinct possibility. Today's 12z EPS
showed all of the U.P. with an EFI >0.9 for wind gusts and values
>0.99 weren't far away in Wisconsin. SoT values >2 further
emphasize the likelihood of extreme wind gusts relative to
climatology.

The low pressure departs quickly on Thursday, but cold air advection
continues into Friday morning allowing for lake effect snow to
increase in coverage and intensity. Overall, the lake effect snow
potential isn't awesome with 850 mb temperatures cooling to between
-12 and -15C while inversion heights linger around 4-5kft through
 Friday. Winds slowly veer late Thursday through Friday so any
 more dominant LES bands should move slowly, but the DGZ isn't in
 the convective cloud layer so snow ratios shouldn't be too high.
 A more progressive pattern starts this weekend with a series of
 low amplitude systems bringing generally light system and lake
 effect snow to our area.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night)

Will briefly carry MVFR cloud deck at KCMX around daybreak,
otherwise will generally trend toward VFR until late in the period.
At that point, expect CIGS to fall to MVFR as the lower levels
become saturated.  Once again, the main threat will be LLWS as
another 45 kt LLJ passes over the forecast area this
afternoon/evening.  At the surface, winds will be southeasterly at
12 to 15 kts with gusts up to 28 kts.

An active week is expected across Lake Superior as multiple chances
for gales and storms are expected. As a sfc high pressure moves over
the lake tonight, winds will veer to the SE by tomorrow morning,
decreasing blo 20 knots tonight, before increasing to the mid 20
knot range late tomorrow morning. A 50kt LLJ with WAA will bring
increased stability across the lake, but we are still expecting some
southerly gales of 35 to 40 knots across the central and eastern
portions of the lake Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Behind these southerly gales, an anomalously strong low pressure
system is expected to develop across the Central Plains before
lifting across western Lake Superior Wednesday night into Thursday.
Confidence is very high, to essentially certain, for high-end gales
across all of Lake Superior developing late Wednesday night into
early Thursday. Confidence is also quite high for storm force gusts
to approach 55 knots by mid-morning on Thursday from the west. If
the colder air behind the system can move in faster than expected,
it is not out of the question that we could see some gusts approach
Hurricane Force Wind criteria. Winds will diminish rather quickly by
Friday morning as the low pressure system lifts NE to Hudson Bay. A
more active pattern looks to continue into the start of next week as
well.

outages.

Waves building to 10 to 16 feet on Lake Superior could lead to
minor beach erosion and localized lakeshore flooding along the
western shoreline of Upper Michigan on Thursday and east of
Munising Thursday night.
