.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 327 AM EDT WED SEP 8 2021

MSAS analysis this morning shows a 993 mb surface low centered
northeast of Lake Superior. On the large scale, the pattern
continues to be defined by a closed upper low centered between Lake
Superior and James Bay, leaving the U.P. in cool, moist cyclonic
flow on its southwestern flank. While overall the weather has
evolved as forecast, the main difference early this morning is the
unexpected lack of cloudiness over at least parts of the U.P. In
many areas, the PBL has attempted to decouple, leading to lighter
winds than previously thought. However, winds will increase again
this morning with diurnal mixing, with some 20-25 mph gusts expected
again today (higher over the Keweenaw and eastern U.P.).

Like yesterday, the abundant mid-level moisture and cool air aloft
will lead to another round of diurnally-driven instability showers,
perhaps given a slight boost by a subtle packet of mid-level Q-
vector convergence rounding the ULL after 18z. However unlike
yesterday, thunder is not expected to be widespread. In fact,
thunder chances are near zero today. With surface temps just a few
degrees cooler than yesterday and a subtle stable layer around 600-
700 mb, parcels should mostly fail to reach the hail growth zone
resulting in shallower showers and little to no lightning. The one
possible exception is over the far western U.P. this afternoon where
the slightly warmer marine layer pushing onshore could provide just
enough of an extra boost to the instability to get parcels past that
stable layer. High temps should mainly be in the mid 60s, except
pushing 70 south central.

Tonight, the pressure gradient will gradually weaken as the system
pulls away to the northeast leading to winds slackening off through
the night. However, there will still be enough moisture around to
keep some cloud cover in areas downwind of Lake Superior. In those
areas, lows should be in the low to mid 50s. In the interior and
south central where there is a better chance of seeing clearing
skies, look for lows in the mid to upper 40s.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 329 PM EDT TUE SEP 7 2021

Progressive upper flow will be the story through the extended. Cool
cyclonic flow will persist through Wednesday night. Most light shras
will be diurnally driven and will dissipate after sundown but cannot
rule out a few lake induced shras...especially east...through the
overnight. Upper heights begin to rise on Thursday as surface
ridging builds into the Upper Lakes from the west. Thermal trough
axis will linger over the eastern Lake through midday before some
warming from the west.  Cannot rule out a shra or two lingering
through the morning east.  Otherwise...skies will clear from west to
east through the afternoon. Surface ridge will move east of the area
Friday with return southwesterly flow and subsequent
warming...temperatures will be a couple degrees above normal Friday.
Next quick moving upper trough will push eastward through Ontario on
Saturday pushing a front eastward across the area. Most upper support
stays north of the Lake. GFS had been the wettest solution but 12Z
run has trended towards the Euro with a drier frontal passage.  Will
keep chc/low chc pops especially north on Saturday but further
reductions seem likely. Surface and upper ridging build back in for
Sunday before next upper trough moves eastward along the
U.S./Canadian border into Ontario early next week bringing another
chance of shras then.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night)
Issued at 142 AM EDT WED SEP 8 2021

Boundary layer winds managed to decouple at KIWD and KSAW earlier
tonight but KCMX continued to see gusty winds. With weak CAA
approaching the area this morning expect to see winds pick up again
late this morning, but not quite as strong as earlier expected.
Because of the decoupling, KSAW is experiencing some LLWS early this
morning, but this will end once the surface winds begin increasing
this morning. Winds will pick up even more with diurnal mixing, but
will be offset by the gradual weakening of the pressure gradient
over the region. Gusts to around 27 knots are expected at KCMX this
morning, with gusts to 20-23 knots developing at KIWD and KSAW.
Winds will relax by late afternoon. Isolated showers will continue
over the area through the first half of the forecast. At times, the
VFR ceilings over the area will give way to MVFR ceilings,
especially at KCMX and KSAW this morning, but VFR is expected
through the afternoon and evening.

Issued at 327 AM EDT WED SEP 8 2021

Marginal NW gales continues on the north-central and eastern lake
this morning with any 40+ kt gusts being confined to higher
observing platforms. As as area of low pressure northeast of the
lake gradually pulls away today, look for NW winds right around gale
force to continue through the afternoon. Have cancelled the Gale
Warning for the west-central zone as ship obs and the west central
buoy are showing winds well below gale threshold. Elsewhere, the
Gale Warnings continue as previously scheduled, although winds may
subside below gale force a few hours earlier than previously thought.

After today, expect light winds generally 20 kts or less through
Friday evening. Friday night, a trough passing across the lake will
lead to SW winds around 25 kts out ahead of it with some 30 kt gusts
possible, followed by winds veering around to W and then NW behind
it on Saturday at around 20-25 kts. Lighter N to NE winds are
expected for Sunday.
