After a rather pleasant Labor Day conditions will turn stormy later
tonight into Tuesday as a strong shortwave emerging from southern
Manitoba will deepen as it heads across the Northern Plains and the
Upper Great Lakes region later today into Tuesday. This deepening
shortwave trough will lead to cyclogenesis as the deepening sfc low
over the Northern Plains this evening will track across northern
Lake Superior Tue afternoon. Expect showers and thunderstorms to
develop ahead and along the storm system's associated cold front as
it moves west to east across the cwa late tonight into Tue morning.
Some storms across the U.P. could become strong to marginally severe
as instability builds ahead of the front and strong deep layer shear
is expected with the system. Gusty south winds ahead of the cold
front Tue morning over the east half of the cwa will veer west-
northwest and become gusty behind the front Tue afternoon,
especially across the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Attention tonight turns to strong shortwave trough emerging out of
southern Alberta/southern Saskatchewan which will lead to
cyclogenesis as a sfc low deepens across nw Ontario tonight and
tracks over northern Lake Superior on Tuesday. Models indicate a
cluster of showers and thunderstorms developing later this evening
over northern MN along the system's cold front that will track
quickly across Lake Superior into at least the west half of the U.P.
by early Tuesday morning on the nose of a 45-50 kt LLJ jet nosing
into the south central U.P. Discounting the ridiculous 2000-2500
j/kg depicted by the 12Z NAM, consensus of other models shows MUCAPE
of 500-1200 j/kg late tonight/early Tue, highest near the WI border.
This instability coupled with 1-6km bulk shear (approximation for
effective shear) up to 40 knots, a few storms could become strong
producing maybe dime-sized hail and gusty winds, especially along
the WI border. Storms may also be capable of producing localized
heavy downpours as PWATs rise to around 1.5 inches, which is nearly
twice the average for early September. Any flash flood threat will
be minimized by fairly rapid w-e movement of storms along the
advancing frontal boundary.

Tuesday, showers and elevated thunderstorms will likely be ongoing
over the central and eastern U.P. as a 45-50 kt LLJ nudges into the
U.P. in advance of a deepening mid-level trough north of the
Boundary Waters. NAM soundings indicate anywhere from 500-1000 j/kg
MUCAPE over portions of the east half with strongly sheared and
veering profiles and sharply rounded hodographs. Deep layer shear
approaches 60 kt. As the wave closes off north of Lake Superior and
continues to deepen, the system's cold front will sweep across the
U.P. from west to east. There could be a second round of
thunderstorms with the cold front over the central and east in the
early afternoon, depending on how much temps warm and the atmosphere
destabilizes. But given there will likely be thick cloud cover in
the warm sector, it's not likely there will be much destabilization.
In the unlikely event that there is enough instability, strong shear
could support a quick-moving line of low-topped storms capable of
isolated wind damage, mainly over the eastern U.P., so this will be
something to watch. Behind the front, WNW winds will gust as high as
30 mph and perhaps as high as 40-45 mph mph over the Keweenaw
Peninsula. CAA in this WNW cyclonic flow will also lead to lingering
scattered lake enhanced rain showers in the afternoon, mainly across
the north. Expect max temps Tuesday ranging from the mid 60s to
lower 70s.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)
Issued at 434 PM EDT MON SEP 6 2021

A seasonably strong fall storm ushers in a chilly air mass resulting
in blustery weather with widespread cloud cover and lake effect rain
showers. Cloudiness and a stiff breeze off the lake should cause
below normal highs and above normal lows through Thursday. A warming
trend with decreasing cloudiness is expected on Friday into Saturday
when another cool front moves through the area. Timing, strength,
and impacts of this cool front are unclear at this time.

A ~995 mb surface low positioned near the north shore of Lake
Superior at 00Z Wednesday lifts northeast toward James Bay by 00Z
Thursday. The latest NAEFS guidance continues to indicate this area
of low pressure is near climatologic minimums or about 3 standard
deviations below average. As a result, a steep pressure gradient is
likely to produce gusty NW winds through Thursday, especially during
the afternoon when deeper mixing occurs. Wind speeds over the lake
were a knot or two lower than the previous forecast, but a moderate
gale still seems likely.

Increasing heights and surface pressures should allow for clearing
skies late on Thursday. With a fairly chilly air mass already
overhead, clearing skies and light winds may allow temperatures to
tank by Friday morning. NBM 10th percentile indicates higher
elevation cool spots could dip into the low/mid 30s with some frost
potential, but decided to just nudge the forecast in that direction
for now. The sharp boundary layer inversion should burn off quickly
on Friday morning with warm air advection and abundant sunshine
allowing temperatures to warm up substantially.

The weekend forecast is still murky with large run-to-run
differences between the models. WPC cluster analysis indicates a
fairly even split between the clusters meaning roughly equal chances
of above/below normal temperatures. There appears to be decent
agreement that the synoptic scale pattern becomes more zonal so
perhaps seasonal weather is the best bet for this weekend.

Mainly VFR conditions are expected at the terminals through this
evening. With showers and thunderstorms moving in from the west
with the approaching frontal system, expect conditions to lower to
MVFR at KIWD and KCMX late tonight and at KSAW Tuesday morning.
Winds will turn southerly late tonight and a strengthening low
level jet could bring borderline LLWS to KSAW.

Light winds today will ramp up late tonight as low pressure develops
over northwestern Ontario. Southerly winds will increase to around
20-25 kts around midnight and then continue to increase into Tuesday
morning. A period of southerly gales is expected over the east half
mid-morning Tuesday. After that, a cold front will sweep across the
lake Tuesday afternoon with winds veering around to westerly behind
it and increasing to around 30-35 kts. There could even be some 40
kt gusts over the north-central and east half Tuesday night and
again Wednesday morning. Therefore, have upgraded gale watches to
gale warnings with this forecast package. Winds will gradually
subside Wednesday evening, falling below 20 kts late Wednesday
night. After that, light winds generally 15 kts or less are expected
through Friday.
