.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 429 PM EDT SAT SEP 4 2021

Water vapor imagery and RAP analysis show a mid-level trof extending
from Hudson Bay to the Northern Plains. Within the trof, a mid-level
low is centered over far ne Manitoba. Its vort max will be of
interest to the fcst here later Sun aftn into Sun evening as it
dives s to Upper MI. Otherwise, a few shortwaves are swinging thru
the trof. The first, currently moving across the fcst area, is
responsible for the -shra/-dz today. Much of the pcpn is now
confined to the eastern fcst area which is still ahead of the sfc
trof. To the w, clouds are clearing out across western Upper MI. The
clouds and light pcpn have held temps down to the low/mid 60s so far
today, but over the w where some sun is appearing now, temps are
rising toward 70F. A couple of shortwaves are noted from far nw MN
across southern Manitoba/adjacent northern Ontario. In the last
couple of hrs, sct shra/tsra have developed ahead of these waves
with some of the convection just recently reaching western Lake
Superior.

As upstream shortwaves swing eastward, expect isold to sct
-shra developing to the w to spread e as well, at least into western
Upper MI during the evening hrs. Given the overwater instabilty
(MLCAPE of at least a few hundred j/kg, SBCAPE upwards of 500-
1000j/kg), certainly possible a few shra could continue across Lake
Superior thru the night, possibly affecting portions of nw Upper MI.
Under partly cloudy skies, temps should fall into the upper 40s F
across the interior w and generally 50s elswewhere.

Attention then turns to the shortwave/vort max dropping s to Upper
MI late Sun aftn/evening. Approaching wave will support at least sct
shra development, especially n and e as the flow off Lake Superior
will keep dwpts more elevated, resulting in more instability (MLCAPE
of potentially a few hundred j/kg by late in the day when the 500mb
cold pool around -22C approaches). Very little instability is noted
over the interior w half of Upper MI (MLCAPE under 100j/kg). With
the warm waters of Lake Superior boosting sfc and mixed layer T/Td,
will see shra development over the lake as well, not just over land,
particularly in the late aftn/early evening as the cold pool aloft
arrives. All of the models show max MLCAPE over Lake Superior and
SBCAPE values rise upwards of 500-1000+j/kg in the 21z-00z time
frame underneath the 500mb cold pool. Should be one of those fall
days to see some photogenic showers out over the water. Per the
Szilagyi waterspout nomogram, conditions may sneak into waterspout
potential with convective cloud depths to around 20kft and water sfc
to 850mb delta-T increasing to around 13C btwn 21z-24z. No mention
of thunder was included in fcst, but wouldn't be surprised if a
couple of the shra manage to be deep enough to generate a
lightning strike or two. High temps should generally range from
the mid 60s nw to the lwr 70s F se. Will be breezy as well with
gusts mostly 20-25mph during the aftn.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday)
Issued at 421 PM EDT SAT SEP 4 2021

A fairly active weather pattern is expected through next week.
Synoptic scale troughs move through the area Sunday evening,
Tuesday, and perhaps next Saturday too. Generally speaking, below
average temperatures and above average precipitation is expected.
The Lake Superior shoreline should receive comparatively more
rainfall resulting from lake effect/enhanced rain. This is good news
considering the Lake Superior shoreline is currently in D0/D1
drought status.

The first system moving through is an energetic clipper tracking
southeast across our CWA late Sunday into early Monday. Cold air
advection associated with this system cools 850 mb temperatures to
around 5-6C by 00z Monday. Latest analysis of Lake Superior water
temperatures indicates south-central portions are around 20C with
lake average temperatures around 18C. Thus, delta-Ts in the 12-13C
range are guaranteed with locally higher values up to 15C possible.
CAMs indicate convective cloud depths generally between 20-25 kft
with locally higher values to 30 kft possible. Combined, these
values indicate Szilagyi Waterspout Index values between 0-3 with
locally higher values possible. CAMs also indicate SBCAPE values
approaching 1000 J/kg with locally >1500 J/kg when adjusting surface
parcels to 20C water temps. Thus, a marginally supportive
environment for thunderstorms and waterspouts exists Sunday evening
with any thunder/waterspout threat diminishing quickly after sunset.

Overnight Sunday through Monday is expected to be dry with scattered
low and high level clouds. The next 500 mb trough develops a surface
low Monday evening that strengthens while moving east on Tuesday.
The surface low track is somewhat uncertain with trends in ensemble
guidance indicating a slightly slower and farther northwest low
track. If that trend continues then the heaviest precip may shift
north of our CWA, consistent with the most recent ECMWF EFI
analysis. Even if that occurs, widespread light to moderate WAA
precipitation is expected for Tuesday with light lake enhanced CAA
precipitation lasting into Wednesday. Lake temperatures may be a few
degrees cooler by Tuesday night, but Lake-850 mb delta Ts around 12-
13C are marginally supportive of continued lake effect rain. By 00z
Wednesday, NAEFS guidance indicates MSLP values near climatology
minimums with a tightening pressure gradient supporting gusty W/NW
winds late Tuesday into Wednesday.

Subtle NW flow disturbances prolong rain chances through Thursday or
Friday, especially near the Lake Superior shoreline during peak
heating. Ridging that intensifies across the intermountain west
early this week moves east late this week into next weekend. At this
time, a warming and drying trend is expected late this week into
next weekend.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon)

With the passage of a sfc trof, expect improving conditions from w
to e this aftn. At KIWD, MVFR cigs will scatter out to VFR by 19z.
VFR conditions will then likely prevail for the remainder of the
fcst period, though there is some potential of MVFR cigs Sun morning
for a time. At KCMX, expect IFR cigs to improve to MVFR then scatter
out to VFR by 20z. VFR conditions will then prevail thru tonight
before MVFR cigs return Sun morning as low-level moisture increases,
further aided by Lake Superior. At KSAW, IFR cigs will improve to
MVFR by 19z with MVFR cigs scattering out by 22z or sooner. VFR
conditions will then prevail for the remainder of the fcst period.
Expect gusty nw winds to around 20kt or so at all terminals on Sun.

With low pres dropping se toward James Bay tonight/Sun and cooler
air also arriving, westerly winds across Lake Superior will become
nw and increase. Winds will reach 15-25kt later tonight/Sun morning.
Expect some gusts to 25-30kt Sun aftn/evening. Winds will then
diminish to under 15kt from w to e late Sun night/Mon as a high pres
ridge moves across Lake Superior. On Tue, deepening low pres will
cross northern Lake Superior. Ahead of it during Mon night,
southerly winds will ramp up to 15-25kt, strongest across eastern
Lake Superior. In the wake of the low, expect 20-30kt nw winds to
develop from w to e later Tue into Tue night. Depending on how much
the low deepens, there could be a period of nw gales to around 35kt
across the e half of Lake Superior. Winds will slowly diminish from
w to e on Wed with winds under 15kt across Lake Superior by Thu
morning.

On another note for late Sun aftn/evening, conditions may become
marginally supportive of waterspouts to occur with some of the
showers moving across Lake Superior, particularly across s central
portions of the lake.
