.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 404 AM EDT SAT AUG 28 2021

Outside of a few showers and isolated thunderstorms grazing counties
near Lake Michigan overnight, the brunt of repeat shower and
thunderstorm activity has been staying just out of the area in a
better thermodynamic environment just north of surface frontal
boundary draped from southern MN through central WI in the western
Lower Peninsula. Moist low levels combined with southeasterly
upslope flow over the west half of the U.P. has yielded low clouds,
patchy fog, and even some drizzle.

Showers along the Lake Michigan shoreline will continue eastward
this morning. The first half of today should be relatively quiet
with shortwave ridging moving across the area. It will be incredibly
humid with dewpoints pushing into the lower 70s during the day.
Highs today will range from the low 70s north to the lower 80s south
so it will feel quite uncomfortable. Current thinking is there will
only be short breaks in the overcast through the afternoon but if
the overcast ceilings scatter out a bit more than expected highs
will be a bit higher and it will feel even more miserable.

Main shortwave rounding base of central Canada upper trough will
push a cold front into MN and far northwest WI by late in the day.
This will be the zone for additional shower and thunderstorm
redevelopment by late in the day. Sufficient instability and shear
will allow some of those storms to become strong to severe. Better
instability in our area will be closer to the WI line unless skies
scatter out longer than anticipated. Will have to keep an eye on
these storms as they push across the area this evening into the early
part of the overnight for gusty wind and locally heavy rain
potential.

Precipitation chances will then diminish through the late
overnight hours.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)

A cold front progging west to east across the U.P. is expected to
start the extended period. Afterwards, expect rather calm, cool, and
dry weather until late next week.

As a low in northern ON begins to undergo cyclogenesis Sunday,
expect a cold front to push through Upper MI from west to east
throughout the day. Wouldn't be surprised if precip in the west ends
pretty early in the day as drier air entrains behind the front
rather quickly. There is a small possibility for some severe weather
in the east Sunday afternoon as the front pushes through, as MUCAPEs
are around 1000-2000 J/kg and 0-6km bulk shears are around 35 to 50
knots (SPC has the area under a Marginal risk currently). The NAM4km
hodograph for Newberry also looks favorable for right-movers. Could
certainly see downpours in some thunderstorms in the east Sunday, as
ensembles show PWATs in the 90th percentile. Hail and winds would
probably be the biggest severe weather threat Sunday. Otherwise,
mostly cloudy skies should give way to sun behind the front as CAA
moves in; some breezy conditions could be seen across area behind
the front, especially in the Keweenaw Peninsula.

As ridging sets up over us this upcoming week, expect cooler and
drier weather to dominate, with highs mainly being in the 70s and
lows being near 50 inland and near 60 by the Great Lakes.

Eventually, as we approach the end of next week, we could see
another shot of rain. Most model guidance has the rainfall starting
sometime Thursday and going until the end of the period, as
troughing and height falls move over us.

A very moist airmass remains over the area. VLIFR ceilings at SAW
and CMX should improve some by midday...at least to IFR.  Skies may
clear even more to MVFR but confidence is low in the extent of
clearing. MVFR ceilings should continue at IWD.  A cold front will
bring multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms this evening with
ceilings falling back below IFR.

Expect a quieter day on the Lake today as winds diminish to less
than 10 knots and east southeasterly swells work their way out of
the Lake. Gradient will tighten up again overnight tonight as as
cold front begin to push west to east across the lake. In addition to
some gusty winds associated with clusters of thunderstorms...
southerly winds will initially gust over 25 knots but as surface low
wraps up just north of the Lake on Sunday expect a short duration (6
hours or so) of post frontal westerly gales across the north half of
the Lake. Winds will quickly diminish overnight Sunday night and
then remain below 15 knots for much of the upcoming week.
