.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday)
Issued at 429 PM EST WED JAN 20 2021

MSAS analysis shows a 982 mb surface low near the Manitoba/Ontario
border this afternoon and SPC mesoanalysis depicts a 50-60 kt SW LLJ
overspreading the U.P. along a cold front. With this LLJ moving
through, southerly winds have been gusty with many sites seeing
gusts to 30 kts and even stronger winds in the usual downsloping
areas (Grand Marais to 40 kts last hour). Still thinking there will
be some patchy blowing snow in exposed areas of the east half of the
U.P. However, winds seem to be just a few kts weaker than expected.
In addition, there still could be some light snow over the far
eastern U.P. when the cold front reaches Lake Michigan and
convergence along the front aligns with the lake and gets a boost
from modest lake-based instability. However, am not impressed with
model soundings showing meager moisture depth so leaned towards the
drier CAMs for POPs and QPF this evening. This results in less than
a half inch of new snowfall. Therefore, since the new snow amounts
are lower and since blowing snow will remain patchy, opted to cancel
the earlier Winter Weather Advisory. Lakeshore Flood Advisory
remains in effect for southern Schoolcraft County as previously
scheduled given waves still expected to reach 10-12 feet.

Tonight, winds will veer to west behind the front. They will remain
gusty through the night as the core of pressure falls moves off to
the east and pressure rises of 2-4 mb/3 hr move into Minnesota and
western Lake Superior. This orientation of pressures rises and falls
means the isallobaric wind will be aligned with the pressure
gradient, especially across the Keweenaw. Model soundings show 40-45
kt gusts mixing down across the Keweenaw through the night, so have
issued a Wind Advisory for Keweenaw and northern Houghton Counties
for 03z through 17z tomorrow. These stronger winds will also cause
waves on Lake Superior to build to over 12 feet so have kept (and in
fact extended until 14z) the Lakeshore Flood Advisory for the
Keweenaw.

Tomorrow, as the system passes by to the north of Lake Superior, it
will drag a secondary cold front down across the U.P. 850 mb temps
drop from around -10 C out ahead of this Arctic front to around -18
C or colder behind it. There are minor timing differences in the
models but overall the consensus is for that front to reach the
western shore of the U.P. around 18z and the central U.P. around
21z. Therefore, temp curve tomorrow will be non-diurnal with highs
occurring in the early morning and temps then plummeting behind the
front in the afternoon. This front will be the main feature to watch
in the short-term period. Convergence along it plus lake-based
instability behind it could lead to at least a brief snow squall for
all of the U.P. Depending on where this convergence band sets up,
there could end up being a surprise band of heavy lake-effect snow.
The 12z RDPS had a strong convergence band but in an unusual NW-SE
orientation; the 12z NAM looked more realistic but then the 18z NAM
looked more like the 12z RDPS. All of this is to say that
confidence, while high overall that it will snow at least a little
bit, is low when it comes to exactly where and exactly how much. By
tomorrow evening, more typical multi-band NW flow LES will be
established across the lake-effect snow belts.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday)

Models suggest that a the positive height anomaly near Greenland
will slowly shift to the west into northeast Canada while a ridge
prevails near or into the Gulf of Alaska. As a result, a pattern
favoring troughing into the Great Lakes will give way to blocking
with a split flow across the CONUS with a progressive northern
stream affecting the northern Great Lakes. A brief period slightly
below normal temps will give way to moderating conditions into
next week.

Thursday night, 850 mb temps to around -20C along with deeper
moisture over the area will favor a period of at least moderate LES
for northwest wind snow belts. The snow may diminish slightly
overnight with 850-700 drying and inversion heights falling to
around 5k ft.

Friday into Friday night, nw flow LES will continua with 850 mb
temps remaining in the -20C to -22C range. SLR values should also
remain at or above 20/1 with the DGZ through much of the cloud layer
over the east half. As winds diminish overnight, low level conv may
increase into Alger County.

Sat-Sun, models were in reasonable agreement that a northern stream
shrtwv and associated with inverted trough will bring an area of
snow through the region from late Sat night into Sun. Forecast 285k-
290k isentropic lift and 2 g/kg moisture available were
consistent with potential for QPF into the 0.10-0.25 inch range.
Southerly winds and 850 mb temps around -11C may also bring the
potential for some lake enhancement off of Lake Michigan.

Mon-Wed, models/ensembles suggest that the main impacts from a
southern stream shrtwv will remain well the south of Upper Michigan.
High pressure is likely to build toward the region with north to
northeast winds. At least some light LES is expected as 850 mb temps
linger around -14C.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Thursday evening)

A strong low pressure system tracks southeast across Ontario tonight
with gusty southwesterly winds veering to gusty northwesterly winds
by the end of the TAF period. At CMX, westerly gusts near or in
excess of 40 knots will result in patchy blowing snow, but
substantial vsby restrictions are not expected at this time. MVFR
cigs and VFR vsbys are expected to prevail throughout the TAF
period, but snow showers late in the TAF period will result in
brief vsby restrictions. In particular, an arctic cold front
passes through all terminals tomorrow morning with potential for a
snow squall that may briefly reduce cigs/vsbys into the IFR
category. Lake effect snow showers are expected to impact
cigs/vsbys at IWD and CMX late Thursday afternoon.
