Satellite imagery shows a low pressure spinning over northern MN
this afternoon. As this low slowly spins towards us, shower bands
(as evidenced by our radar and satellite imagery) are moving over
the U.P. and northern WI. Banding is thickest, however, by the
center of low in north MN. Temperatures across the south central and
east have reached the upper 40s today, as they saw less cloud cover
and precipitation. In contrast, the north central and west look to
have only gotten into the lower 40s to upper 30s, with KIWD and
Calumet even seeing some snow showers earlier today.

As the low moves over our area tonight, and as temperatures drop,
expect snow showers to move into the west and central Upper MI. The
greatest snowfall tonight looks to be over the Michigamme highlands
and north-facing upslope areas in the north central, as the
traveling low should make a convergence area with the winds over the
north central U.P.. Expect 1 to 3 inches in and around the
Michigamme highlands tonight and Wednesday morning, with locally
higher amounts up to 4 inches possible. Otherwise, expect around an
inch or less out west, and around 1 to 2 inches between Pictured
Rocks and Marquette. Some areas in the central interior may see up
to an inch at spots too through Wednesday morning. What's looking
tricky for this forecast are the temperatures tonight. Given that
temperatures are looking to bottom out close to freezing over the
north central, a slight increase in temperatures would significantly
affect snowfall accumulations. Models show that snow will initially
melt before accumulating near freezing. I'm agreeing with these
models, as they make meteorological sense (melting snow cool
temperatures typically, and should in this situation). Otherwise
tonight, patchy fog is expected across the north central and west.
Therefore, travel could be hazardous tonight and Wednesday morning,
as the fresh, wet snow may make road conditions slick, and
visibilities could be low at spots.

Temperatures should warm back up Wednesday so that rain mixes in
over the area. However, highs should be cooler over the north
upslope areas Wednesday, as the ongoing cloud cover and
precipitation should help things to stay cool enough to allow some
snowfall to stay mixed in with the rain (although no accumulations
are expected, as temperatures should be above freezing by this
time). As the low continues to pass through to the east, expect
precipitation amounts to decrease in the west throughout the day.

The nettlesome cut off low that began influencing our weather on
Sunday will finally be departing to our southeast on Thursday and
Friday. Shortwave ridging moves in on Friday with chances of seeing
the giant ball of fire in the sky increasing from west-to-east. The
potential window of sunshine is brief as a weak clipper system dives
onto the Northern Plains on Saturday that should enhance low level
clouds in light northerly flow off Lake Superior. Northwest flow
continues on Sunday as the next clipper system approaches on Monday
and moves through our CWA by Tuesday evening. A much cooler air mass
fills in behind Tuesday's clipper, which should help to carve out a
long-wave trough across eastern North America by the middle of next
week.

An area of synoptic forcing lingers across the east through Thursday
morning resulting in rain/snow showers continuing until around
sunrise on Thursday. Farther west, mid to upper levels dry out
quickly Wednesday evening as synoptic scale support drifts east.
However, lingering boundary layer moisture will be enhanced by
strengthening northerly upslope flow off Lake Superior. Model
soundings show saturation and weak lift through the lowest 4-5 kft
through Thursday afternoon. Temperatures in this saturated layer are
generally between 0 and -6C suggesting a persistent lack of cloud
ice. As a result, a thick low-level cloud deck will be maintained
with the most favored upslope locations (Michigamme Highlands)
experiencing accumulating dz/fzdz. Diminishing moisture, weakening
winds, and increasing surface heating should result in dz/fzdz
coming to an end Thursday afternoon.

More tranquil weather sets in by Friday morning with near normal

chance for widespread precipitation appears to be with a cold front
moving through Monday night/Tuesday morning. A much colder air mass
moves in behind the cold front allowing for a rain changing to snow
situation. Some deterministic guidance indicates a weak wave of low
pressure riding along the cold front, which would enhance
precipitation and perhaps allow for some accumulating snowfall. 850
mb temperatures fall to around -10C behind this cold front, which
may be cold enough for some light lake effect snow Tuesday
/Tuesday night. Even if it doesn't snow, well below normal
temperatures appear increasingly likely for the middle of next week.

MVFR conditions will continue at CMX for most of the period with
snow showers and fog off and on. IWD will be MVFR for most of the
night into Wed morning with some snow showers and fog off and on
before VFR conditions occur in the afternoon. SAW should continue to
see scattered rain showers until this evening, when the rain should
transition over to snow. SAW will stay LIFR/VLIFR through the period
with some upslope helping to keep it down.

Southwest winds 20 to 25 knots over the western lake should
dissipate to 20 knots or less later this afternoon as a sfc low
moves towards us. On Wednesday, as this low moves over us, expect 20
to 30 knot north to northwesterly winds over the central lake,
expanding to the eastern lake Wednesday night as the low moves east
out of Upper MI. Winds should diminish to 20 to 25 knots over the
eastern lake Thursday as the low continues east away from the area.
Expect winds to become 20 knots or less across the lake from
Thursday night into the weekend.
