.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 255 PM EDT SAT APR 10 2021

A mostly cloudy day was observed across the region, with some breaks
in the clouds observed via GOES 16 imagery during the late morning
hours. By the lakeshores of Delta County and southern Schoolcraft,
low visibilities continued through the morning hours. Otherwise, its
been a mostly dry day. Daytime highs have climbed into the 50s
across the region, except some spots still in the 40s near Lake
Michigan and in the Keweenaw.

Upstream, mid-upper level low with a surface low over Illinois will
slowly track toward the northeast. Precip associated with this will
surge northward tonight along a boundary of healthy isentropic lift
and fgen at 850mb. The solutions suggest precip could move into the
south central late this afternoon, followed by it overspreading the
eastern half of Upper Michigan tonight and west by tomorrow morning.
I expect the rain to continue into Sunday, with the east seeing the
effects of the dry slot by tomorrow afternoon. The rain looks to
persist through the day in the west though. Given the forcings and
PWATs climbing to about an inch, total QPF of half inch to an inch
is expected. The higher totals through tomorrow are likely across
the Huron Mountains where the northeast flow is expected to provide
an orographic enhancement.

Overnight lows in the east should bottom out in the 40s with some
mid-high 40s possible in the interior east. The west could dip into
the mid-upper 30s. Daytime highs on Sunday will largely be in the
50s. If clouds break in the east when the dry slot moves in, some
low 60s could be possible.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

Not much change to the thinking of the past several days. Still
expect one cutoff low to be drifting off to the southeast on Monday
while a second trough over the Northern Plains cuts off from the
flow and drifts eastward across the Upper Midwest. On Monday, a NW-
SE oriented band of fgen forced by strong shearing deformation along
the mid-level vort max streamer will set up through far western Lake
Superior and then SE across northern Wisconsin. This fgen will lead
to a band of heavier showers that could clip the far western U.P.
but will mostly stay out of the area during the day. Highs Monday
should be in the 50s most areas. That fgen band will pivot northward
into the U.P. Monday evening leading to more widespread showers.
Colder air wrapping in across the area very late Monday night into
Tuesday morning could lead to a brief changeover to wet snow over
the interior far west, but models mostly show the cold air arriving
after the precip, so have taken most of the snow mention out of the
forecast. With this colder air wrapping in, temps will be cooler on
Tuesday. Took highs down several degrees from the NBM init for
Tuesday. Subzero 850 mb temps and little to no sunshine should keep
temps in the 40s for highs, and would not be surprised if this
forecast is still a few degrees too warm.

These cooler temps persist into Wednesday and Thursday, although
with some improvement thanks to skies finally starting to clear
(especially on Thursday). Highs should range from the mid 40s to low
50s both days. The overall model/ensemble consensus is still that
this second cutoff low will exit the area by late Wednesday as
slight ridging builds across the Upper Great Lakes for the end of
the week. However, a small fraction of the total multi-model
ensemble suite (8% to be exact, using yesterday's 12z runs) keeps
the cutoff low overhead through at least Thursday. By Friday it will
definitely be gone leading to a return to mostly sunny skies and
widespread 50s highs.

Prolonged event of low conditions will continue at all sites. SAW
will stay VLIFR/LIFR through the entire forecast period with upslope
northeast flow and there will be some LLWS late tonight into Sun
morning. IWD and CMX will go from MVFR to LIFR/VLIFR by morning.
LLWS is possible at IWD late Sun morning into the afternoon and
at CMX late Sun afternoon.

Northeasterly winds are expected to spread over the lake tonight
from the east to the west. These winds are generally expected to
climb to 20-25 knots by Sunday morning. These winds will continue
through the day and as the tighter pressure gradient moves over the
lake, some gale force gusts to 35 knots may be observed across parts
of the north-central portion of the lake, especially for higher
reporting platforms. By late Sunday evening winds are expected to
fall below 20 knots across the lake and winds should remain light
through the middle of next week.
