.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday)
Issued at 345 PM EDT SUN APR 4 2021

Across the forecast area today, mid to high level clouds have
persisted with a layer of dry air within the lower 10k feet. This
dry layer has allowed a lot of the moisture associated with these
WAA/isentropically forced clouds to evaporate before reaching the
ground. Despite the cloud cover, this WAA and southeasterly flow has
allowed temps in the west to burst into the 60s. RTMA ob analysis
has much of the west in the 60s and some parts of Ontonagon and
southern Houghton counties in the mid-upper 60s. With the same flow
off Lake Michigan into the east, more moderated temps have been
observed, albeit still higher then most of the guidance suggested.
There, temps have largely topped out in the 50s with some 60s
observed in the interior and along the Lake Superior shoreline. The
aforementioned dry layer and dinural mixing has allowed dewpoints to
remain in the 20s across the region. With the temps climbing as high
as they have in the west, RH values in the west and parts of the
east have fallen to near 20%.

For the remainder of the afternoon, expecting the trend to continue,
with some additional warming of a degree or two and subsequent
lowering of RH values being possible. Upstream, the trough
responsible for the WAA/isentropic ascent will shift eastward into
the region this evening. The same forcings will persist through the
night, as will the drier low levels of the atmosphere. However,
guidance is pinging on 1-200 j/kg of elevated MUCAPE, which could
support a shower or two overcoming the dry air in the central, south
and east by morning. I maintained the dry forecast though given the
probability of this happening is low. Overnight lows will be mild,
with mid-upper 30s in the central and near 40 in the east and far
west.

Tomorrow, synoptically, the trough will continue eastward over the
region. With the core of the weak isentropic forcing shifting
eastward as well, any showers that does develop tonight could move
into the east during the morning hours. For a while, guidance was
pinging on a better precip signal tomorrow morning in the east, but
have since dialed it back. Given this, continued the trend of
maintaining a dry forecast. Daytime highs should climb into the 50s.

The west will be dry and warm. Model certainty pegged much of
southern Houghton and the interior portions of Gogebic and Ontonagon
counties with greater than 80% probability of exceeding 70 degrees.
At the same time, model soundings show steepening lapse rates
through day, which again should allow for gusty winds near 15 to 20
mph to mix down to the surface. While they also suggest the mid-
levels gradually moistening through the day in the central and east,
the mixing and lingering dry low level air in the west should again
lower RH values in parts of the far west to near 25%. By the late
afternoon, destabilization of the atmosphere is expected and a shower
or perhaps a thunderstorm can't be ruled out near the western WI/MI
stateline. I should note though that guidance has trended backwards
in regards to timing and its possible the forecast area may avoid
convective shower activity through 0z tomorrow evening. If something
does develop though, elevated MUCAPE values of around 1000j/kg with
weak shear likely wouldn't support much in the way of healthy
thunderstorm organization in our forecast area.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday)

Models now appear to be trending toward a more active weather
pattern through much of the extended with opportunities for much
needed rainfall across the area.

Beginning Mon night into early Tue, a shortwave moving from northern
Manitoba towards Hudson Bay will propel a cold front into Upper Mi
late Mon night into Tue morning. Model soundings show some increase
in elevated instability into the western and perhaps south central
fcst area to around 1000 j/kg which could support some thunderstorm
activity in these areas into the evening hours ahead of the
approaching frontal boundary and at nose of 30 kt LLJ. Most models
(with the exception of the NAM) have instability waning and thus the
threat of t-storms diminishing overnight Mon night into early Tue
for the rest of cwa ahead of the advancing frontal boundary. While
soundings show nice veering profiles and curved hodographs into this
area, effective shear is somewhat weak, generally 25-30 knots, so
not really expecting any stronger storms to support large hail into
the west. PWATs rising to around 1.00 inch and modest 850 mb
transport should support some rainfall across the rest of the cwa
late Mon night into early Tue with the passage of the cold front,
but the question is how much? Best dynamics/forcing along the front
is well north of Lake Superior into far northern Ontario. GFS
ensembles and SREF plumes indicate qpf of maybe .25 to .5 inch west
tapering to .1 to .25 of an inch central and east.

Behind this front, expect some clearing Tuesday afternoon west and
central before some light rainfall returns Wednesday to mainly the
west half as a low begins to emerge from the Central Plains. Models
indicate that the low should lift ne into the Upper MS Valley and
Upper Great Lakes region by the end of the work week as it weakens.
The GFS and the ECMWF models then show the low continuing to persist
over the Upper Great Lakes through next weekend. Gulf moisture being
drawn northward ahead of the low with PWAT values rising to 1.00-
1.25 inches by late Wed into Thu will result in increasing chances
of much needed soaking rainfall across the area. Rain showers will
gradually diminish in coverage by late week (Fri into the weekend)
as the low continues to weaken over the area and the best tap of
Gulf of Mexico moisture gets shunted east.

Dry air at the lower levels will maintain VFR conditions at
KIWD/KCMX/KSAW through the forecast period with only mid clouds
moving through the area. Light winds tonight will increase from the
south to southeast Monday and become gusty during the afternoon.

High pressure will exit east toward James Bay this afternoon and
tonight as a low pressure trough approaches the Upper Mississippi
Valley. The result will be increasing easterly winds tonight to 20-
25 knots over the north-central and west early. While the winds
settle down to near 15-20 knots in the west overnight, winds will
increase across the remainder of the north and parts of the eastern
lake by Monday morning to near 30 knots. A trough will move into the
western parts of the lake by Monday night, supporting northeasterly
winds to around 25 knots by Monday afternoon. Over the northeast
third of Lake Superior, southeasterly winds to near 30 knots with
some gale force gusts to 35 knots will be possible into Tuesday
morning.

On Tuesday, winds should fall to 20 knots or lower across the lake
as the aforementioned trough moves through the lake and high
pressure builds in from the west. Upstream, a system is expected to
develop in the Central Plains Tuesday night and start tracking
toward the Upper Great Lakes. This will result in east to northeast
winds increasing back to 20 to 30 knots Wednesday and Thursday,
beginning first over western third of Lake Superior during the day
Wednesday.
