.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday)
Issued at 404 PM EDT WED MAR 24 2021

MSAS analysis and surface wind obs show an elongated surface cyclone
stretched out across northern Wisconsin and the western U.P. The
initial surge of WAA this morning led to widespread showers, which
tapered off by late morning as the cyclone's dry conveyor belt
wrapped northward across the U.P. This afternoon, SPC/RAP
Mesoanalysis shows the mid-level vort max centered over central
Wisconsin. A bit of dCVA out ahead of the wave will bring another
round of steady rain to the central U.P. over the next few hours.
Radar shows plenty of 25-35 dBZ returns over north-central Wisconsin
associated with that lift which should translate into an additional
0.1-0.2" of rain from roughly Iron River east to central Menominee
County and north to western Marquette County.

Tonight, as the low pulls away to the northeast and drags its cold
front across the area, winds will quickly veer around to WNW. Temps
aloft won't be cold enough to support pure lake-effect
precipitation, but will be cold enough that in conjunction with the
remaining wrap-around moisture, a short period of lake-enhanced
upslope precip is expected for the western tier counties this
evening. It looks like this will fall as rain quickly transitioning
to light snow. Given the lack of any truly cold air, and thus little
to no potential for dendritic growth, along with some surface
melting, SLRs will be 10:1 or less. Therefore, am expecting [...]
for snowfall tonight. All of that wrap-around precip is expected to
be done by sunrise tomorrow. Temps tonight will fall into the mid
20s to around 30 behind the front. Seasonably cool NW to N flow with
continued cloudiness tomorrow will keep highs around 30 north to
around 40 south.

Somewhat active long term forecast period as several rounds of rain
and/or snow are fcst to move through the region.

Beginning Friday, combination of lingering weak q-vector convergence
on nw periphery of system moving through se Lower Mi, marginally
cold temps of -10/-11C between 875 mb and 900 mb, and upslope nne
flow could support some light snow showers/flurries in the morning
into Marquette and maybe even Baraga county. High pressure
building in from northwest and associated subsidence will put an
end to any light snow showers and provide some afternoon clearing
over the interior west and south central portions of the cwa. Look
for highs ranging from the lower 30s north under lake clouds and
northerly flow to the lower 40s south central where afternoon
clearing is expected to take place.

Mid-level trough and associated frontal system projected to move
through Upper Mi is split into two pieces of shortwave energy.
Southern stream wave emerging from the Central Plains will eject out
ahead of the front Sat afternoon bringing a mix of rain/snow into
the evening hours, but then northern stream wave pushes into the
area later in the evening/overnight as phasing causes the sfc low to
deepen along the front as it pushes east into the Central and
Eastern Great Lakes. Expect ptype to change over to snow by late
evening, but with system quickly moving across the area, models not
showing much more than .25 of an inch of qpf with around an inch or
two of wet snow possible, likely greatest west and north central in
developing deformation area and strengthening f-gen on backside of
the low.

Sunday, models differ somewhat on magnitude of cold air behind Sat
night's cold front, with h85 temps now as low -14C off the 00Z GFS
and as low as -12C per ECMWF. Cyclonic nw flow and marginally cold
temps could result in some light accumulation of nw flow LES into
mainly east half portions of cwa. Instability and mixing will also
result in blustery nw winds gusting to 20-30 mph, strongest east
half.

Deterministic models appear to coming into better agreement with
pattern and shortwave features for early to middle of next week.
Broad ridging, rising heights and surge of WAA in a sw flow will
result in drier, warmer and breezy conditions on Mon. Warm and
breezy conditions will continue into Tue as a 50-60 kt LLJ surges
across the area early Tue. A strong shortwave and deepening sfc low
lifting ne from southern Saskatchewan into northern Manitoba will
bring a cold front into the area late Tue/Tue night but limited
moisture and weak forcing along the front should only result in
light rain changing to a light rain/snow mix Tue night. Temps will
rebound above normal for Mon and Tue with highs reaching into the
50s across much of the area by Tue. Expect a sharp cool down Wed
into Thu with CAA behind the front as both the GFS and ECMWF

low level moisture will be slow to exit in the wake of the low. As a
result, while IFR cigs will improve to MVFR overnight at KIWD, VFR
conditions may not develop until Thu aftn. MVFR cigs will then
return this evening. At KCMX/KSAW, MVFR cigs will probably persist
thru this fcst period.

NE gales continue on the west half of the lake as the center of the
low moves north across the U.P. and central Lake Superior. This will
transition to NW gales on the east half tonight behind the system's
cold front, diminishing below gale early Thursday morning and then
below 20 kts by early afternoon. NE winds will increase again to 25-
30 kts across much of the lake Thursday night as a strong low passes
by well to the south. Winds will subside below 20 kts again Friday
morning. The next period of strong winds looks to be on Sunday over
the east half when gales continue to look likely with a shot of cold
air. Right now it looks like temps will stay just warm enough to
prevent any substantial freezing spray with this shot of cold air.
Lighter winds are expected again Monday.
