.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

Broad troughing covers roughly the western 2/3 of the CONUS this
afternoon, with numerous shortwaves in play. One such wave is
lifting northeastward through the Upper Mississippi Valley and
helping to extend surface troughing northward from a 998 mb surface
low centered near Kansas City. Broad mid-level isentropic lift out
ahead of this trough is causing light to moderate snow to fall over
the southern half of Wisconsin and some of southeastern Minnesota
and far northeastern Iowa with widespread visibilities in the 1/2 to
2 mile range. The mid-level wave will damp out as it lifts
northeastward across the U.P. overnight tonight. Still, there will
be enough ascent for a broad area of mostly light to occasionally
moderate snow overnight. Models show saturated lift in the DGZ for a
few hours, mostly in the 00-06z window.

However, snow will have to overcome some dry air at the onset which
is a potential limiting factor. Another limiting factor is low SLRs
owing to a high/thin DGZ and rapidly veering winds in the column
below the snow growth region leading to fracturing of the dendrites.
There is even the possibility that some rain could briefly mix in
along the Lake Michigan shoreline tomorrow morning as wet bulb zero
heights reach around 500-1000 ft AGL at the tail end of the precip.
All that being said, lake enhancement and upslope enhancement could
argue for higher amounts locally. The HREF 24-hour QPF LPMM exceeds
0.5" in a small area in Keweenaw County, which makes sense as the
spine of the Keweenaw often over-performs in SE lake-
enhanced/upslope flow events. Similarly, lake enhancement off of
Lake Michigan with sfc-850 mb delta T's around 8-9 C could boost QPF
over some of the south-central. The general idea was to lean towards
the higher end of QPF guidance in those two areas, and then towards
the median or even a bit below the median everywhere else. Should
end up seeing around 3-6" of snow by tomorrow morning in the
Keweenaw and 2-4" in Menominee, Delta, and southern Schoolcraft
Counties. Therefore, have issued Winter Weather Advisories for those
two areas. For the south-central, although amounts will be on the
low end for an advisory, figured the low SLR (around 10:1 or perhaps
even lower) plus surface temps rising to around or slightly above
freezing will make for a slushy and slippery morning commute in
those areas. Elsewhere, snow totals should generally be in the 1-2"
range.

Snow will end from west to east tomorrow morning with dry air
quickly advecting in behind the trough. Temps aloft would be cold
enough for lake-effect snow showers in the WNW wind snow belts, but
with how dry the incoming air mass will be, chances look low.
However, what thin saturation there is will mostly be coincident
with the DGZ so have included flurries in the WNW wind snow belts
through the end of the day. Temps will reach their highs in the
morning and then remain steady through the day (west half) or fall
through the afternoon (east half).

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)

At the start of the long-term period, ongoing flurries is about the
only "active" weather expected for tomorrow night. There are some
indications that perhaps some light snow showers could develop, but
confidence is too low at this time to include mentionable PoPs
outside of flurries given the unsupportive model profiles. But,
should light snow showers come to fruition and overcome the dry air
expected to inhibit more robust cloud growth, locations within the
WNW wind belts would be the places to see it occur, notably in the
east. As for temperatures, there is about a 20 degree spread amongst
model guidance for lows tomorrow night, with some depicting as low
as the negative teens in the interior west to barely single digits
above zero within those same areas. Have split the difference, not
going too low given that the coldest air looks to remain more toward
the west of Upper Michigan, and some lingering cloud cover could
moderate temps.

Beyond this, the overall pattern across North American continues to
present our forecast area with a few opportunities for additional
snow. The first looks to be Thursday, when a shortwave rotating
around the base of its parent upper level low northeast in Manitoba
goes negative and kicks off some surface cyclogensis in the
Arrowhead/western Lake Superior region. Timing varies some among the
deterministic guidance, but the consensus appears to be some light
snow chances Thursday night. The next shot for precip originally
looked to be on New Years. The southern stream of split upper level
low is still expected to result in a decent system developing and
lifting northeast, however, guidance has trended this southward over
the Ohio Valley. Impacts for us with this system may be some lake
effect Saturday and Sunday. The next shot for snow looks to be
Monday, although confidence at the moment is low given the mixed
solutions presented among the 12z guidance of this clipper surviving
the Canadian Prairies.

Following the exit of Thursday night's system, cold air that's been
trapped toward the north and west will shift eastward into the
forecast area. By Friday night, guidance suggests 850mb temps could
drop to -15 to -20C and stay there through at least early Monday.
This should result in lows dropping into the single digits above and
below zero most nights this weekend. Some colder conditions look
possible Saturday night in the interior west, particularly if we are
able to see some clearing cloud cover. Daytime highs look to be
mostly in the teens to near 20F for the weekend.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)
Issued at 1251 PM EST TUE DEC 28 2021

Low cigs remain stuck in place across the area, mostly MVFR but with
IFR cigs at SAW. IFR cigs are likely to persist at SAW as the
surface wind becomes SE and upslope off of Lake Michigan. Tonight, a
weak frontal system will move in, causing light snow to overspread
the terminals from SW to NE. Conditions should mostly remain in IFR
but there could be some period of LIFR vis, especially at SAW and
CMX with upslope enhancement to the snow with continued SE winds.
Winds will quickly veer around to westerly Wednesday morning as the
snow ends. Cigs will begin to lift at that point as well, but
slowly. Some light lake effect snow showers or flurries could
continue at CMX through the end of the TAF period, but the cloud
layer looks to be too thin for any sort of robust LES.

west half and tomorrow morning east half as a trough moves across

moderate freezing spray to much of the lake, before subsiding back
below 20 kts late tomorrow night. Winds will then remain light,
