.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday)
Issued at 446 PM EST THU DEC 23 2021

SE flow off of Lake Michigan is currently combining with some weak
forcing from a subtle shortwave to produce light snow showers across
the eastern half of Upper MI early this evening.  The best chances
for accumulating snow will be confined to the southeasternmost
counties, but even there, accumulations are expected to only be in
the 1 to 2 inch range before abruptly ending early tonight.

In the wake of the aforementioned shortwave, ridging will strengthen
in the upper levels for tonight, and the southerly flow will inhibit
LES chances across most of the forecast area.  Warm advection though
from a front slowly pushing through northeast WI at this time will
be the main focus as patchy advection fog forms along the WI/MI
border and northeastward into Upper MI.  No headlines are in place
at this time, but this area will need to be monitored for dense fog
development.

Friday, a wintry mix of drizzle, freezing drizzle, and snow showers
will accompany the aforementioned warm front as temperatures climb
into the mid to upper 30s.  Meanwhile, winds will strengthen to 10
to 15 mph during the afternoon and veer to the southwest as the
gradient tightens a bit behind the warm front.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday)

For the last 3 days, medium range model runs have maintained an
overall consistent depiction of the large scale flow thru at least
the middle of next week. Flow across N America will be driven by an
anomalously strong and persistent ridge over the N Pacific and
Aleutians, extending to the Bering Sea/western AK at times. This
will force a downstream western N America trof, which in turn will
tend to force ridging farther downstream over eastern N America.
However, a -AO and -NAO are still present. The AO is forecast to
remain in the negative phase, increasingly negative over the next
few days before its phase becomes much more uncertain heading into
the new year. The NAO is forecast to trend toward neutral, but
overall, remain weakly into the negative phase. The negative phase
of both should work to temper eastern ridging and the warmth
downstream into the Great Lakes that would be expected to result
from what will become a rather deep mean western N America trof. End
result of this pattern will be a series of shortwaves ejecting from
the western trof with associated sfc low pressures tracking to the
the Great Lakes region. Timing/amplitude of these waves will be
problematic at times. The larger scale amplitude of the western
troffing/eastern ridging at the time of the passage of each wave
will determine how much warm air surges northward with each. Waves
will affect the Upper Great Lakes roughly every 1 to 2 days,
including Christmas Eve day, Christmas night, Sun night/Mon morning
and late Tue/Wed. The wave Christmas night may bring some -sn, and
the waves during the first half of next week should be snow
producers. It still appears that none of these events will produce
significant pcpn. However, the wave Sun night/Mon morning remains a
more important feature to monitor for potential advy level snowfall.
As for temps, this will be a mild period for this time of year. Thru
at least the first half of next week, expect daily temps to be above
normal as cold air will be held up over western Canada and the
northern Rockies underneath the mean western trof. So, very little
or no LES is expected in the wake of passing shortwaves. Farther
down the line, looks like some of the colder air to the w will make
some inroads into the Upper Lakes later next week.

Beginning Fri night/Christmas Day, light pcpn (-ra/-dz) associated
with the shortwave affecting the area on Fri will linger across the
e into Fri evening, but will end by midnight. Christmas Day will be
a dry day with the fcst area in btwn shortwaves. Weak wave passing
Sat night may generate some patchy -sn across the area. Temps will
be mild on Christmas Day with highs into the upper 20s to mid 30s F.

Next shortwave is still on track to reach the western Great Lakes
Sun night/Mon morning. This wave will be a better pcpn producer than
its predecessors, and models have been moving toward better
agreement on this wave. There are definitely more GFS ensembles now
showing a decent pcpn event compared to recent fcst cycles, but the
CMC ensembles show much more spread. Averaging out the last couple
of days of GFS/CMC/ECMWF deterministic model runs suggests QPF from
0.25 to perhaps as much as 0.6 inches, which would support at least
a widespread advy snowfall for the fcst area. Should be a good ese
wind component with sufficiently cold air over Lake Superior for
lake enhancement on the Keweenaw Peninsula. So, at least right now,
it appears the Keweenaw would be inline for the greatest snow
accumulations from this event. To the s, it may not be cold enough
for any enhancement off Lake MI. In the wake of the shortwave Mon
aftn into Mon night, air mass probably won't be quite cold enough to
support any LES. If LES did develop, it would be light.

Given the regular and frequent ejection of shortwaves from the
western trof, there will likely be another approaching late Tue into
Wed to provide another opportunity of sn, perhaps advy level. With
colder air arriving in the wake of this wave, there should be at
least some LES off Lake Superior to follow into Thu.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon)
Issued at 1254 PM EST THU DEC 23 2021

Weak ridging in the upper levels should be sufficient enough to keep
IWD at VFR levels for the duration of the TAF period.  Elsewhere
though, a shortwave moving through will produce some snow showers at
KCMX and KSAW this afternoon at which point flight conditions will
deteriorate to MVFR/IFR levels at KCMX.  KSAW is already at IFR
levels and will remain there for the duration of the TAF period.
Meanwhile, wind speeds will generally be south/southeasterly at 5 to
10 kts until tonight and tomorrow when they increase to 10 to 13 kts
with gusts up to 23 kts.

Light SSE winds will prevail through tonight, but expect an uptick
to 25 kts by tomorrow afternoon mainly over the eastern portions of
the lake ahead of the next system.  Winds will gradually veer to the
southwest and eventually northwest by Friday night in the wake of
the system, remaining in the 20 to 25 kt range with some isolated
gusts up to 30 kts over the eastern parts of the lake through
Saturday. After a bit of a lull through the remainder of the
weekend, focus then turns to gale force gusts Sunday night/Monday
morning with the next trough.  Gusts will top off in the 35 to 40 kt
range.
