.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 436 AM EST THU DEC 16 2021

RAP analysis shows a 975 mb surface low centered along the
Minnesota/Ontario border this morning near the Lake Superior
shoreline. This low is the result of a vigorous negative tilt
shortwave riding northeastward through the Upper Midwest. This
system will keep moving northeastward into northern Ontario today
while continuing to deepen slightly, to around 972 mb by early
afternoon. Impressive pressure rises of nearly 12 mb/3 hr are noted
over Minnesota and western Wisconsin this morning. This area of
pressure rises will lift northeastward across the U.P. as colder air
advects in behind the system's cold front, leading to strong wind
gusts which by now have been well advertised. Obs upstream show
mostly 40-50 kt gusts now in northern Wisconsin, which will
overspread the U.P. in the next couple of hours. However there have
occasionally been even stronger gusts - 56 kts at Rhinelander last
hour, as well as 59 kts at La Crosse, WI and 67 kts at Rochester,
MN. These stronger wind gusts are associated with a developing sting
jet on the backside of the low which can be seen as a thin tail of
higher clouds curling around the back of the upper-level low. Still
a bit unsure of how deep mixing will be when this sting jet passes
over the U.P., but BUFKIT soundings form last night's model runs
upstream have been mostly on-par with obs or actually slightly under-
forecast gusts (particularly those stronger ones) so it still looks
like an period of about 3 hours of 55-65 mph gusts is likely across
the U.P. in the next couple of hours through mid-morning. After the
sting jet lifts through, winds will remain elevated, but not as
strong. Gusts across the area will continue to be in the 35-50 mph
range through the daylight hours, diminishing this evening as the
pressure gradient relaxes. Will leave the High Wind Warnings in
effect as previously scheduled.

The exception to all of this will be the Keweenaw. A long fetch WSW
wind up there could allow for some gusts up to 70 mph this morning,
and then gusts up to 60 mph through this evening. In addition, lake-
enhanced wrap-around rain and drizzle this morning will transition
briefly to freezing drizzle (although ice accums are questionable
given the recent warmth) and then to lake effect snow. SLRs will be
on the lower end because it's not all that cold behind the system
and what dendritic growth there is will remain fairly high in the
column through the day, plus whatever dendrites do form may be
shattered by the strong winds. Still, the CAMs have a fairly
impressive QPF signal, so a couple inches of accumulation to locally
several inches is possible - if you can find a place to measure it,
that is. The 60-70 mph gusts will make for widespread blowing snow
and possibly blizzard-like conditions in spots. Briefly considered a
Blizzard Warning for the Copper Country but decided a strongly
worded Winter Weather Advisory would suffice. Those traveling to
work or school this morning should note that road and visibility
conditions will be much worse for the return home this afternoon and
evening.

Temps will fall through the day after highs this morning, into the
20s this afternoon and then through the teens tonight with some
single digit lows likely in the interior west. Wind chills will
range from -5 to +5 overnight, coldest west. Lake effect snow will
diminish through the night as drier air advects in. However, there
may end up being a west flow lakeshore band hugging the shoreline
from Grand Marais eastward late tonight. Some CAMs show that, though
overall the convergence signal is not terribly strong so it would
probably only result in a couple inches of snow at worst.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)
Issued at 431 AM EST THU DEC 16 2021

Light LES will linger into Friday morning across the Keweenaw in the
northwest winds behind a weak departing shortwave.  Additional
accumulations will be minimal though as winds weaken further and
start shifting to the northeast by late morning.  Meanwhile, normal
temperatures for this time of year will return in the CAA.  Daytime
highs across Upper MI will generally be in the 20s on Friday
afternoon.

After a brief dry period of zonal flow in the upper levels Friday
afternoon/evening, focus will quickly turn to the next upper
shortwave.  This perturbation will be rather weak, but it could
generate enough forcing for a quick 1 to 3 inches from Friday night
through Saturday evening with some localized higher amounts over
Copper country due to lake effect in the northwesterly winds on the
backside.

As winds shift to the southwest on Sunday, any LES will quickly be
cut off.  Expect another brief precipitation free period before the
next system traverses Ontario from Sunday night through Monday.  At
this point, long range operational runs are trending the best snow
chances to the north and east of the forecast area though in
correlation with a 50 kt LLJ co-located with the surface low.  And,
weak ridging in the system's wake will keep weather quiet until some
weak lake effect over the northwest snow belts Tuesday night.

As mentioned above, temperatures will return to normal and remain
there for the duration of the extended period.  Besides some weak
WAA ahead of the surface low on Monday when high temperatures reach
the low 30s, daily highs will generally be in the 20s with overnight
lows in the single digits (higher terrains) and teens.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday morning)

Strong low pressure near Thunder Bay is making for high wind gusts
at all of the terminals this morning, although sporadically, with
times of lighter winds intermixed. The strongest gusts, as well as
LLWS, will be the next couple of hours at SAW and IWD with a very
gradual diminishing trend after that through the rest of the day. At
CMX, strong winds will continue right through this evening. SAW will
stay MVFR today and then become VFR tonight.

At IWD and CMX, a mix of lake effect and wrap-around precip will
move into the terminals by mid-morning, initially as drizzle but
then transitioning to snow by early afternoon. Could be some light
FZDZ at both sites but given warm temps the past couple days not
expecting much if any icing. Once the snow starts, there will be
considerable BLSN thanks to the strong westerly wind. Vis will
likely drop below airfield minimums at both sites for an hour or two
at IWD and for several hours this afternoon at CMX. Conditions will
improve fairly quickly at IWD as snow lifts north of the area but
will remain poor into this evening at CMX with continued snow
showers and BLSN.

.MARINE...(For the 4 AM Lake Superior forecast issuance)

The long advertised storm is here. A 28.9 inch low near Thunder Bay
this morning will bring widespread storm force winds to all of the
lake today, with perhaps a few isolated hurricane force gusts over
the western half of the lake, especially between the Apostles and
the Keweenaw. The only change to headlines this morning was to split
off the far western open lake zone to transition them down from a
Storm Warning to a Gale Warning sooner (Noon EST). Otherwise, Storm
Warnings remain in effect followed by Gale Warnings tonight.

Winds will subside below gale force late tonight/early Friday
morning from west to east as the system pulls away to the northeast.
However, colder air wrapping around the system coupled with winds
remaining elevated on Friday will lead to moderate freezing spray
across much of the lake. That will diminish Friday afternoon. Winds
across the lake will subside below 20 kts by Friday afternoon and
then remain light through Sunday, except for a brief period of NW
winds 25 kts on the east half Saturday night. SW winds 25-20 kts are
expected across the lake Sunday night ahead of the next trough,
veering to west and then NW behind the trough on Monday.
