.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday)

Upper air pattern consists of a 500 mb trough on the west coast and
a trough on the ern seaboard with a broad and flat ridge across the
central U.S. This broad ridge will remain across the area through
00z Tue, so quieter weather will continue through then. Did not make
too many changes to the going forecast.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday)

Main item of interest in a strong storm that's progged to lift
northeast through the Upper Great Lakes. Before this, zonal upper
level flow will begin to amplify over central CONUS as deep
troughing moving into the west coast forces ridging over the region.
This transition looks to begin early Tuesday. As this occurs, flow
will become southerly and a warmer and more moist airmass will
advect into the region. Temps Tue look mainly to top out in the
upper 30s to near 40. Development of fog and drizzle overnight
should limit temps from dropping much Tuesday night. As more WAA is
expected Wednesday, continued moisture and increasing winds aloft
will support a warmer day over the region with highs in the 40s.
Warming potential will likely be limited given the snowpack, but I
wouldn't be all that surprised if a 50 degree observation comes in.

As the trough exits the Rockies and a surface low develops in the
lee of the Rockies late Wednesday, increasing isentropic forcing
will bring the region an opportunity for rain showers by late
Wednesday. There's enough elevated CAPE present in model soundings
to have me put thunder in the grids Wednesday night. The low looks
to lift to near the Arrowhead region while it continues deepening.
This will result in increasing winds through the night Wednesday.
both the Euro and GFS suggests 925mb southerly winds ahead of the
low could exceed 60kts, with the GFS suggesting even hurricane force
winds that low in the atmosphere. I'm certainly skeptical of winds
that strong, but confidence is high for 40 to 50mph winds over the
forecast area Wednesday night. If these southerly winds occur, then
lakeshore flooding could be a concern on the Bay and Lake Michigan.
The low is expected to continue toward James Bay through the night,
and a colder airmass will begin pushing into the region. The coldest
air doesn't look to come in quick enough aloft, and there looks to
be an opportunity for some freezing rain or drizzle early Thursday.
By afternoon, precip looks to be primarily snow and confined to the
northwest wind belts, but given the high building in rather quickly
through the day, notable accumulations aren't expected.

Another shortwave could follow late Friday or Saturday with
another punch of cold air and lake effect snow behind it.

LLWS will be the main threat through 00Z tonight as a 50 kt LLJ
passes over Upper MI.

Southwest gales to 40 knots will continue into this evening across
mainly north central Lake Superior and then the wind stays up to 30
knots into Monday before dropping below 20 knots briefly Monday
afternoon and night. The wind then increases to the southeast to 30
knots on Tue. Attention then turns to a very strong low pressure
system coming out of the plains on Wed. This system will move across
western Lake Superior Wed night and could produce storm force winds
to 55 knots. Some of the model guidance is even hinting at hurricane
force wind gusts to 65 to 70 knots or so and 80 knots of wind at 850
mb and 70-80 knots at 925 mb in the GFS. This is a hint of how
strong the system and gradient is over the area and will have to be
watched. As event gets closer, pretty sure gale/storm warnings will
be issued as this system has been advertised for several model runs
now. The wind dies quickly down by Friday. Active weather pattern
will continue.
