Upper air pattern consists of a deep 500 mb trough over the upper
Mississippi River Valley this morning which is heading quickly east
to the lower Great Lakes by 00z tonight. Shortwave ridging will
quickly move into the area tonight into Sunday. Will be quiet for
this forecast period. Lowered low temperatures a bit tonight, but
not by much with some fresh snow cover and clear skies, but the wind
will stay up a bit. Did lower highs a bit on Sunday as well with
some gusty wind.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday)

Quieter weather begins the long term period with above normal
temperatures through Thursday morning with a trend toward cooler
than normal temps going into next weekend. Precipitation appears to
stay near to above normal with the best shot of widespread precip
falling late Wednesday into Thursday. Widespread advection fog is
possible late Tuesday through Wednesday as rich Gulf of Mexico
moisture returns. There are early indications that a train of low-
amplitude clipper systems returns next weekend into next week.
For temperatures, NAEFS guidance indicates 850mb temperatures
increasing above the 90th percentile Sunday afternoon through
Wednesday morning. A strong boundary layer inversion prevents this
warm air aloft from mixing down to the surface initially, but
continued moisture advection should prevent nocturnal cooling
Tuesday and Wednesday nights when Pwats also increase above the 90th
percentile. Temperatures at 850mb, 700mb, and 500mb and precipitable
water values increase to near or above the 99th percentile as the
tracks across our CWA Wednesday night. With all that said,
temperature records may be in jeopardy late Wednesday until the cold
front passage early Thursday.
Starting at 00Z Monday strong zonal flow will be in place suggesting
near to above normal temperatures and dry weather lasting into
Tuesday. A trough moves onto the West Coast on Tuesday amplifying
ridging lee of the Rockies. As a result, flow aloft becomes more
southwesterly while boundary layer flow becomes southeasterly
advecting moisture from the lower Great Lakes into our CWA. This WAA
should warm dew points above 32F setting the stage for potentially
widespread advection fog Tuesday night into Wednesday, especially
for areas favored by southeasterly upslope flow off Lake MI.
A seasonably strong surface low develops over northeast Colorado on
Wednesday then tracks northeast across the Upper Great Lakes on
Thursday morning. EPS means shifted the surface low track about 600
miles south over the past 5 days to an ensemble mean near
Minneapolis at 00Z Thursday. The southward trend slowed the past two
days, but from a baroclinic perspective a surface low track along or
near the swath of heavy snow laid down Fri/Sat seems like a good
bet. Ensemble member pressure centers on the 00Z GEFS indicate a
faster and farther north cluster and a slower and farther south
cluster. I tend to favor the slower and farther south cluster, which
tracks the surface low across our western CWA late Wednesday night
or Thursday morning. Most ensemble members have the surface low
deepening to around 970-980 mb as it moves over Lake Superior so
gales if not storm force winds appear likely.
Widespread rain is anticipated ahead of the cold front with a
transition to lake effect snow as the depth of cold air increases.
Precipitation amounts are generally expected to be heavier across
the west half. However, soundings approaching moist adiabatic as dew
points warm to near or 50F suggest potential for heavy showers and
perhaps a few rumbles of thunder along the cold front. Behind the
cold front, operational models indicate 850mb temperatures cooling
to near or below -15C by Thursday afternoon, which should be more
than adequate for LES development. Operational guidance also favors
W to WNW wind lake effect belts into Friday evening when a clipper
system approaches. This clipper may be a harbinger of the long term
pattern to come.

As a low pressure system lifts farther northeast this afternoon,
expect improving conditions at all sites to continue. Winds will
remain strong out of the northwest with sustained speeds of 13 to 20
kts and gusts up to 30 kts. Winds will weaken late this
afternoon/early evening. And, VFR conditions should return to all
TAF sites by late afternoon. LLWS will be a threat tonight as a 50
kt LLJ passes through the region.
