.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 448 AM EST FRI DEC 10 2021

IR imagery shows low level clouds slowly advecting to the east early
this morning. Meanwhile, some mid and upper level clouds from the
Central Plains from a Colorado Low are beginning to lift towards
Upper MI. Temps this morning have not been dropping as fast as
expected. Therefore, lows this morning may be a few degrees warmer
than previously thought. As we get into the daylight hours today,
expect the cloud cover from the approaching Colorado Low to
continue, if not become thicker, throughout the day. With the mostly
cloudy skies today, thinking the high temps will be in the low 30s
in the west and mid 30s in the east. Late this afternoon, precip
from the approaching Colorado Low is expected to begin moving into
Upper MI...

Once we get into the tonight period, heavy snowfall moves across
much of Upper MI, in particular the central. Strong frontogenesis
and QDivergence, coupled with the abundant atmospheric moisture
found on the NW side of the low, could bring over 8 inches of
snowfall across the area (save for maybe areas near the Great Lakes
shoreline and far west). Indeed, the HREF is picking up on 1" per
hour snowfall rates across much central and eastern Upper MI
tonight, with 1" per hour rates possibly continuing near the NE wind
lake effect belts from the Michigamme Highlands eastward into
Saturday morning due to lake enhancement of the snow off of lake
Superior. White out conditions look possible tonight, as breezy
winds near the Great Lakes could cause some patchy blowing snow.
Snow is also expected to accumulate quickly, and road conditions
could be very slick, especially in the areas where mixed
precipitation such as sleet, freezing rain, and rain is possible
(such as near the city of Menominee and the far east). Therefore, if
travel can be avoided tonight, it would probably be wise to do so.

As the low begins to lift northeast from far eastern Upper MI,
expect the snowfall to end from the west to east throughout the day.
Model guidance shows one last band of frontogenesis parking over the
Michigamme Highlands to Pictured Rocks area Saturday morning.
Therefore, an increase in snowfall rates over the north wind lake
effect snow belts between and over these areas is possible Saturday
morning. As north to northwest winds pick up Saturday morning,
expect patchy blowing snow across much of the eastern UP and along
the Lake Superior shoreline. Therefore, vsibilities may be limited
Saturday morning. As the low continues to pull away, snow should
eventually end in the central UP, continuing on only in the east by
early Saturday afternoon.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday afternoon through Thursday)
Issued at 446 AM EST FRI DEC 10 2021

Snow will end across most of Upper MI by Saturday afternoon as the
aforementioned storm continues its northeastward track out of the
area.  Nonetheless, lingering snow can be expected across the
eastern portions of the Upper Peninsula through Saturday afternoon
until the trailing upper low also exits the region.  Meanwhile,
strong west/northwest winds on the backside of the system will
create areas of blowing snow into the early evening hours, creating
hazardous driving conditions.  As the pressure gradient weakens
though, those winds will taper off by late evening Saturday.

Saturday night, the upper pattern will begin its transition into a
less active period as weak ridging strengthens over much of the
central CONUS.  Expect a bit of a break from the snow at that point
with dry conditions continuing into midweek and a gradual warmup
from Sunday through Tuesday. The strongest warm advection ahead of
the next system though is progged to arrive on Wednesday. With 850
mb temperatures climbing as high as 11C, expect surface temps to
soar well above normal into the mid to upper 40s (even some isolated
50s) on Wednesday.  At that point, focus then turns to the next
cutoff low tracking through the Upper Midwest. Even though there is
still some variability with the long range operational models,
isentropic lift appears to really ramp up from Wednesday afternoon
through Thursday.  However, expect Ptype to be rain with this system
until some snow can mix in with the CAA on the backside.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning)
Issued at 627 AM EST FRI DEC 10 2021

Expect conditions to slowly improve to VFR at all TAF sites this
morning. As a low pressure approaches the area from the Central
Plains this evening, expect conditions to drop down to IFR to LIFR
at all terminals tonight. Heavy snow could be seen at times,
especially at KSAW, where the greatest snowfall is expected to fall
out of all of the TAF sites. KSAW may get to and below airport
minimums tonight due to the heavy snow. Blowing snow may also pop up
late tonight as winds begin to increase from the north, with the
greatest chance of blowing snow possible over KSAW.

Issued at 536 AM EST FRI DEC 10 2021

Expect winds today to drop to 20 knots or less before a Colorado Low
moves into the area tonight. As the low moves in, expect northeast
winds over the eastern lake to increase to 20 to 30 knots, with a
few gale force gusts up to 35 knots possible late tonight.
Otherwise, over in the west, northeast to north winds of 20 to 25
knots by late tonight. As the low lifts out of the area Saturday,
expect north to northwest gales of 35 to 40 knots across the eastern
lake, whereas the west sees winds remain 20 to 25 knots. Expect the
winds over Lake Superior to become southwesterly at 20 to 30 knots
as more zonal flow moves over the area Saturday night and Sunday.
Winds should slowly decrease to 20 to 25 knots across the lake over
the course of Sunday and Sunday night, becoming 20 knots or less by
Monday. These calmer winds are expected to continue through Tuesday.
