.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 302 AM EST THU DEC 2 2021

Latest analysis shows a 986mb sfc low just to the NE of Lake
Superior this morning with a trailing cold front dropping south
across the Arrowhead. The Keweenaw's been gusting all night with
gusts more recently developing here at the office. KMQT VAD profile
estimates 35 to 40kt winds 3kt off the sfc, with a peak wind of 33
mph from the west. Upper Michigan has escaped the bulk of the
strongest winds aloft along with isallobaric assistance due to the
trailing cold front. Low-level stability has been just enough to
keep the 50+kt winds off 4kft AGL from mixing down to the sfc...with
only the Keweenaw tapping into some of those. Houghton Airport had a
peak gust from 280 at 41kts just after midnight, which is also a
favorable wind direction for them to achieve peak gusts based on
their wind rose climatology.

The trailing cold front will start to cross Lake Superior over the
next couple hours, decreasing stability and allowing some gusts to
continue through the morning and afternoon hours. Thankfully, the
bulk of the strongest winds aloft will already be out of the area,
so winds aren't expected to be too strong. As stability decreases
and inversions lift, some lake-effect will get going in the NW wind
belts around sunrise or so with a mix of rain and snow at
first...transitioning over to more snow as cooler air works in. Not
expecting anything too significant for accumulations, maybe an inch
or so across the NW wind snow belts...there could be some slushy
spots out there initially as temperatures continue to fall.

Temperatures will fall through the day today into tonight as cooler
air works in behind the front...high temperatures are probably close
to occuring right now for the day. Light lake-effect will continue
through the day, but mid-level drier air will also advect in behind
the cooler temperatures, so conditions are marginal at best through
the day for better lake-effect with saturation potentially becoming
an issue. By tonight, a ridge will begin to work in from the west as
winds start to back more to the SW. A few high-res models suggest
this may bring a convergent band of LES along the Marquette/Alger
county lines just after midnight or so tonight, so that will be
something to watch. Current fcst hasn't included too much of these
chances yet, but future updates may bring this chances forward.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Upper air pattern consists of a 500 mb shortwave north of Lake
Winnipeg 12z Fri which heads southeast into eastern Ontario 12z Sat.
Another shortwave then heads into the northern plains 12z Sun. 850-
500 MB q-vector convergence and deeper moisture pass mostly to the
north of the area on Fri and then move back into the area Sat night.
Lake effect pcpn will be the main concern for this forecast period
and pops will be mostly in the west to northwest wind snow belts.
Did not make too many changes to the going forecast overall.

In the extended, the GFS and ECMWF show a 500 mb trough in the
northern plains 12z Sun which moves into the Great Lakes region 12z
Mon. A trough moves into the central Rockies 12z Tue which moves
into the central U.S. 12z Wed. More troughing moves into the
northern plains 12z Thu. Active and fast pattern will continue this
forecast period. Temperatures will go from above normal on Sunday to
below normal Mon onward for this forecast period. Looks like a
series of Alberta clippers will continue to move through the area
with episodes of lake effect snow showers after their passage.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night)

A cold front will pass across the area overnight/early Thursday.
This front will cause winds to veer around to W and eventually NW
and become a bit gusty, particularly at CMX, but in doing so will
also begin to relax the LLWS. There will be LLWS at KSAW through 09Z
until the front moves through there. Some light lake effect snow
showers will be possible tomorrow morning at CMX but the showers
will probably be on the weaker side. Have included a reduction to
MVFR vis at KCMX to give some indication of the potential for vis
reductions. CIGS will lower to MVFR at all sites behind the cold
front.

A strong low pressure system is pulling away to the NE of Lake
Superior this morning. It has brought a strong pressure gradient
across the lake with 50+kt winds 2-3kft off the sfc of the lake.
Increased low-level stability from yesterday's warm front has
prevented the strongest of these winds from reaching the sfc this
morning and the storm force wind potential across the west half has
ended. There is a few more hours across the east to see some storm
force gusts, but the duration of such winds will be quite limited.

Later on this morning, a cold front will cross over the lake, which
will bring continued gusts from the NW through the day with the
decreased stability; however, the strong winds aloft will have
already exited to the east of the lake. By sunrise this morning,
most of the gales across the west half will done, but they will last
through lunchtime into the early afternoon across the east.

The next period of strong winds will be Friday when some 30 kt
winds are likely. Winds will subside again into Saturday before a
sfc low pressure moves through the Great Lakes region Sunday
afternoon. There's some uncertainty yet on the track of the low,
but could have some gales from the N to 35 knots or so Sunday
evening. A broad high pressure system will then return across the
region to start next week with light winds.
