.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

Upper level pattern across the Upper Great Lakes has been largely
dominated by a large ridge extending over the Central and Northern
Plains. GOES water vapor and visible imagery over the region today
has been a mix of clouds and clear skies, which with WAA at the
lower levels has allowed many places to warm into the upper 20s and
low 30s. Pretty stark contrast when you compare that to the single
digit lows we saw this morning.
As we move through the rest of the afternoon and into tonight, a
stout LLJ will move over the UP as the upper level ridge axis shifts
eastward into the region. Model soundings show a clear inversion
developing around 2k feet as you'd expect with overnight cooling and
WAA aloft. With the core of the winds expected within the inversion,
these 50-60 kt winds aren't expected to mix down to the surface.
However, steep lapse rates within the boundary layer will allow for
some stronger winds to mix down, especially in the downslope areas
of Marquette and Alger counties. For these areas, 45 mph wind gusts
will be possible. I opted to issue wind advisory for this evening,
specifically mentioning areas in and east of Marquette along highway
41 and along M-28 by the lakeshores. Further south on the Bay and
Lake Michigan, the strong winds will help support large waves which
could support lakeshore flooding and beach erosion. I maintained the
active lakeshore flood advisories for those lakeshore communities.
These winds will limit how much cooling we experience tonight.
Overall it looks like most places will stay in the 30s, with some
high 20s possible in the interior portions of central and western
Upper Michigan.
As we progress through Wednesday, the winds will gradually subside
as a surface low/cold front progresses into the region. It may take
some time for the eastern UP to see these calm down, but the west
looks to go calm by early afternoon. By late in the day, low level
moisture begins increasing in the west and we could see some light
precip. Highs tomorrow look to be in the 40s across the region.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Beginning Thanksgiving...Surface ridging and strong subsidence from
north and west of Lake Superior as noted on fcst soundings should
quickly taper off post-frontal nnw wind LES from west to east
through the day. Would expect no more than an inch or two of
additional snow accumulation and that would be mostly over the east
half. Light LES could linger Thu night into Fri over mainly the
east, but again with inversion heights 4-5 kt and inverted-V look
beneath the inversion, indicative of very dry low-levels, not
expecting much in the way of any additional accumulation...probably
less than an inch.
Dry conditions are expected late Friday into Saturday across the
fcst area as the surface ridge axis builds east and becomes centered
over the U.P.
Models trending slightly stronger with a clipper system progged to
move across the Upper Great Lakes Saturday night and Sunday.
Moderate 800-700 mb fgen response along with limited moisture inflow
will probably only result in an inch of synoptic snow along the
front, mainly east. However, CAA behind the system's associated cold
front with 850 mb temps lowering near -12C late Sunday will support
some additional light LES for the NW wind snow belts Sunday into
Sunday night.
Not surprisingly, there is poor model agreement/continuity for early
next week. 00Z ECMWF shows a weaker clipper system brushing the area
Sun night/early Mon with maybe a dusting of light snow east,
although other deterministic models and ensembles offer no
support for this solution. There is perhaps better support among
the models for a clipper system to move through later Tue, but
again model agreement is poor on timing/strength of this system.
00Z ECMWF advertises a much stronger clipper system than the GFS
or Canadian models.
After below normal temps Thanksgiving Day and Friday expect highs to
maybe trend a bit warmer and closer to toward normal over the
weekend. Post Thanksgiving Day travel concerns look fairly minimal.

Conditions will remain mostly VFR through a majority of the period.
A gradual reduction in ceilings is expected beginning Wednesday
afternoon as the next system moves toward the region. The main story
for this period is the stout low level jet that's over the region
overnight. Peak winds are expected this evening and all terminals
could experience southerly wind gusts near 30-35 mph. The core of
the winds will likely also result in LLWS at IWD and SAW. These
strong winds are expected to last through a majority of the night
before lightening Wed morning. Conditions will fall to IFR by Wed
night at IWD and CMX.

Southerly gales to 35-40 kt are likely to develop this afternoon
over the east half of the lake. These strong winds are expected to
continue overnight and into Wednesday morning. I maintained the
going gale warning. Gusty downsloping winds will allow for these
strong winds right along the immediate shoreline as well as out on
the open lake. Winds are expected to decrease to around 20 kts for a
short time Wednesday morning west half and Wednesday evening east
half, before a cold front moves across the lake Wednesday night
bringing with it north to northwesterly winds up to 30 kts across
nearly all of the lake.. Some gale force gusts will be possible.
These strong winds and cold air will cause some light freezing spray
as well. Expect the winds to diminish to around 20 kts or less by
midday Friday and then remain light on Saturday.
