.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Split flow pattern continues over the western 2/3 of the CONUS with
water vapor satellite this morning showing a northern stream
disturbance moving onshore into the Pacific Northwest and northern
stream ridging downstream over much of the Northern Plains, and a
southern stream wave moving into southern California. These streams
phase into a neutral tilt trough over the Eastern Seaboard. Between
the upper-level ridge to our west and the trough to our east,
surface high pressure is centered over the Ohio Valley, extending a
ridge northward into the Upper Great Lakes. Being on the northern
periphery of this ridge, skies are generally clear (except for a
patch of stratus over the western U.P.) and winds are light from the
west, calm in a few spots. Lake effect clouds and weak/widely-
scattered lake effect snow showers continue over the far
northeastern corner of Luce County but will continue to dissipate
and as drier air filters in and push offshore as the low to mid-
level flow continues to back around to back around to WSW and then
SW.
Today, as the high over the Ohio Valley slides off to the east, the
wind will continue to back around to SW and strengthen as a strong
LLj develops from the Central Plains into the Upper Midwest. Except
for a patch of scattered mid-level cloud cover, it will be a mostly
sunny day with temps rising back into the mid 30s to around 40 for
highs. The filtered sunshine should allow us to tap into the
stronger wind aloft this afternoon and mix some 20-30 mph gusts down
to the surface.
Tonight, the core of the LLJ will pass overhead. Model soundings
show the surface cooling enough to prevent strong gusts from
continuing to mix down to the surface over the interior. However
over the east half and in the downslope areas along the Lake
Superior shoreline it will be a breezy night. Just how high winds
get remains somewhat of a question, as profiles show lapse rates in
the sub-inversion layer not quite dry adiabatic (though still fairly
steep). There will likely end up being a period this evening of 40+
mph gusts from Big Bay eastward along the lakeshore to Grand Marais.
If the near-surface lapse rates end up being just a little bit
steeper, then the HRRR and RAP gusts of 50+ mph could be believable
and a Wind Advisory could end up being needed for Marquette and
Alger Counties. The other windy spot will be the Lake Michigan and
Bay of Green Bay shorelines where strong onshore flow will lead to
gusts of 30-40 mph. The prolonged southerly wind will lead to waves
on Lake Michigan building to around 11 feet, so have issued a
Lakeshore Flood Advisory for Delta and southern Schoolcraft Counties
for tonight and Wednesday. Lows should dip below freezing tonight
over the interior west and central where winds will be lighter, but
stay in the mid 30s east and along both shorelines thanks to the
elevated winds.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

Shortwave energy emerging off the Pac NW Coast is expected to push
east today and Wednesday as it carves out a mid-level trough over
the central CONUS and Great Lakes region by Thanksgiving. Ahead of
this advancing shortwave a weak sfc wave later today will developing
along an approaching sfc trough/cold front. The tightening pres
gradient ahead of the sfc wave and approaching cold front will lead
to the development of a strong south-southwesterly LLJ which will
traverse the fcst area tonight into Wednesday. This in turn will
result in breezy/windy condtions developing tonight which will
continue into Wednesday. Winds on Wed morning will be especially
gusty in downslope areas along Lake Superior where gusts to 40 mph
could be possible. Gusts of 30-35 mph will be possible across the
rest of the east half of Upper Mi on Wed. The surface low/cold front
won't cross into the western U.P. until late Wednesday afternoon.
The warm south-southwesterly flow ahead of the cold front will allow
highs on Wed to climb into the 40s UP-wide. Limited moisture inflow
into the area should yield a mainly dry cold frontal passage. Strong
cold advection on north-northwesterly winds behind the front will
lower 85H temperatures to -13C east to -15C west by Thursday
morning. North-northwest wind lake effect snow showers will develop
Wednesday night and persist through Thanksgiving Day into at least a
portion of Friday. Exact details in total snow accumulation from
this LES event are still uncertain at this time. However, the mid-
level trough moving through the area late Wed night into
Thanksgiving could provide enhancement to LES and maybe boost snow
totals into advisory criteria at some locations. Ridging building
into the Upper Lakes should taper off or end any remaining LES
Friday over the east half. Deterministic models/ensemble means
support ridging/dry conditions then persisting through the rest of
weekend. By early next week, some of the deterministic
models/ensembles hint that a clipper system will move through the
area, although model timing is very uncertain at this time.
After above normal temperatures Wednesday...expect temperatures to
drop below normal Thanksgiving Day and Friday before trending back
toward normal over the weekend. Pre and post Thanksgiving Day travel
concerns look minimal.

High pressure ridge passing overhead early this morning will keep
TAFs mostly VFR and initially keep winds light. IWD could flirt with
the upper end of MVFR this morning due to some pesky stratus that's
not well handled by any of the models, but that should be the worst
of it. CMX will also have a scattered deck that will occasionally
fill in and become an MVFR cig this morning before dissipating
shortly after sunrise. This afternoon, as the ridge moves off to the
east, a strong low level jet will overspread the area. This will
lead to some gusty southerly winds developing, followed by LLWS
overnight at all terminals.
