.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Fog and drizzle early this morning will eventually lift and
dissipate as the day progresses. Upper Michigan will undergo a
brief reprieve from precip chances, but as the trough axis from
the well-advertised low currently crossing the southern half of
Manitoba approaches later today into tonight, expect those PoP
chances to reemerge, particularly for the western half to two-
thirds of the forecast area. The area to pay the most attention to
will be the Keweenaw Peninsula into the Porkies as the LES
machine turns back on under WSW to W flow. In addition to the
upper-level forcing, incoming RH values in the 850-700mb layer
will increase to 80-90+ percent along with rapid CAA. Classic LES
thermal/moisture profiles are evident on model soundings in the
west in particular, with 850mb temps dropping to around -9 to -10
Celsius by around 06z Thursday. Combining QPF values with quickly
increasing SLRs yields chances for the snow to start accumulating
rapidly, with hints that snow rates could easily reach 1" to 2"
per hour. Confidence is medium-high in this occurring, but if the
colder air is slower to arrive and/or the QPF is a bit overdone,
then snow accums could easily be cut from what's forecast. In
other words, stay tuned to see what the 12z models are depicting
to hopefully build even greater confidence in the scenario that
will ultimately prevail.
With this incoming tight pressure gradient, expect breezy
conditions later today into tonight, especially along the
lakeshores, notably in the west and into the Keweenaw. This also
means falling/accumulating snow could easily turn into blowing
snow, reducing visbys for motorists. Highs today will run on the
warmer side of normal before that CAA knocks temps down tonight
into the 20s for most. With ample melting occurring again today,
will want to be aware of any wet surfaces, i.e. roads, becoming
slick tonight regardless of PoP potential as those temps drop.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Not much has changed in the past 24hrs regarding the upcoming late
week and weekend period. There's still some uncertainty in the
pattern's evolution early next week though, but this seems to be
mainly a matter of timing.
With Wednesday's cold front east of the region, the cold air
filtering southeast into the region should be in place by Thursday.
With 850mb temps progged to be near -10 to -12C per GEFS ensemble
mean and Lake Superior running around +7C, the resulting lake-
induced instability will be enough for lake effect snow showers to
develop and progress downstream into the appropriate wind belts. With
the mid-week cold front's upper level low just to the north, a
shortwave rotating around this base should veer winds from the west
to the northwest by late afternoon. This means that more then just
the Copper Country will get in on the shower activity as we move
through the day. Guidance isn't really pinging on a great deal of
overlap between lift and the DGZ, so SLRs around 12-15:1 seem
reasonable. This should translate to about 1-3 inches of snow in the
west wind belts Thursday and 1-4 inches in the northwest wind belts
Thursday night. Some isolated higher areas do look possible across
the Alger/Luce Thursday night. High pressure is expected to build
eastward into the region Friday, which will help bring and end to
this lake effect episode from west to east. Given the timing, some
lingering light showers could persist in the west into mid-morning
and early afternoon in the east as winds shift to southerly and
dry/subsiding air dominates. Highs Thursday look mostly in the 30s,
with some isolated 20s possible in the interior west. Thursday
night, lows look largely in the 20s.
As this ridge builds into the region, waa will help to slowly
moderate temps going into the weekend. We should be close to normal
for a time before the next punch of cold air arrives next week.
Additionally, as the ridge shifts east of the region, LLJ will move
through Friday night and early Saturday, which could make for some
breezier conditions. From there, a brief period of zonal flow aloft
looks to take shape before an amplifying shortwave progresses across
the Canadian Plains by late weekend. Guidance has trended toward a
deeper surface low as it moves through Ontario but there is some
variation in its exact track among the 0z deterministic guidance.
The ensembles also highlight this uncertainty some. Overall though,
each option seems to result in another shot of cold air next week
with blustery winds in some spots. It will also translate into
another lake effect event downwind of Lake Superior through at least
Tuesday when the next ridge builds in.

Fog, LL stratus, and drizzle this morning will give way to a brief
period of VFR at all three terminals today. However, conditions
will deteriorate tonight at KIWD and KCMX in particular as LES
returns. Aviation interests should expect a reduction in cigs to
at least MVFR, although lower categories could occur, and at least
borderline MVFR/IFR visbys due to falling and/or blowing snow.
Winds will generally be westerly and gusty at this point in the
TAF period. As for KSAW, borderline M/VFR cigs are anticipated to
move into the terminal area, as well as perhaps some snow
showers, although may not directly impact the terminal. Don't be
surprised though if future TAFs include an even more pessimistic
look at all the terminals for tonight.

Westerly gale-force gusts up to 40 knots are likely this
afternoon and tonight across the west half the lake. Some gale-force
gusts to around 35 knots are expected across the east half
tonight. Some westerly to northwesterly gale-force gusts to 35
knots will be possible across much of the lake on Thursday and
Thursday night. Expect a reprieve from the gales late in the week
into the weekend, although a few gusts approaching gale-force
could end up being possible late Friday into early Saturday. Gales
could reappear early next week due to a rapidly deepening system
in the area.
