.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday)
Issued at 347 PM EDT FRI OCT 15 2021

Water vapor satellite shows a convoluted upper-level pattern. While
the defining feature is a deep positive-tilt trough over the Upper
Midwest, there are numerous smaller short waves embedded within the
flow. Radar shows a band of showers over the eastern U.P. from the
Garden Peninsula to about Newberry associated with a narrow band of
fgen in the 700-800 mb layer which broadly speaking is in the left
exit region of the upper-level jet that's lifting northward on the
eastern side of the trough. This band of showers will continue
moving through the eastern U.P. for the next couple of hours before
lifting northeastward into Ontario.

Tonight, as the trough axis swings across the U.P., CAA aloft will
drop 850 mb temps to around -1 to -2 C. With Lake Superior surface
temps still around 13-14 C, this cold air will provide sufficient
lake-based instability for lake effect clouds and rain showers to
develop in the WNW wind lake effect belts. Away from the lake effect
belts, skies should clear out at least somewhat. This makes low
temps difficult. Right now, am expecting around 5-10 mph of wind to
be sustained through the night based on the gradient and low-level
lapse rates remaining steep. However, if skies clear enough and the
PBL decouples, winds could go calm and temps could end up lower than
forecast. At the moment, have lows in the mid to upper 30s outside
of the lake effect belts and in the low to mid 40s closer to the
Lake Superior shoreline.

Lake effect clouds and rain showers will continue into the day, but
subsidence behind the trough axis will lead to the mid levels drying
out from west to east, bringing a gradual end to the precip. Over
the Keweenaw and west half, showers should mostly be done by early
afternoon. Over the east, look for them to persist into the later
afternoon and early evening. Areas that manage to see sunshine
should see highs in the mid 50s, whereas over the Keweenaw, north-
central, and eastern lake effect belts highs will remain around 50
with the more persistent cloud cover.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday)

The long term period looks primarily warmer and drier than normal
with lots of sunshine early next week. However, confidence is
growing for a period of active weather late next week.

The trough currently moving overhead will be on it's way out on
Sunday. The air mass dries out on Sunday as ridging builds into the
CWA, which will bring an end to lake effect rain showers from west
to east Sunday morning. Widespread sunny skies and decreasing winds
should result in a pleasant Sunday across the area.

The surface ridge axis moves overhead Sunday night resulting in a
clear skies and light winds supportive of efficient nocturnal
cooling. As a result, Monday morning could host the first frost
and/or freeze for folks away from the immediate lakeshores. The
dry air mass in place should warm up quickly after sunrise on
Monday, especially as winds back more westerly allowing for some
WAA that continues into Tuesday when a few 70F readings are
possible.

Forecast confidence decreases on and beyond Wednesday as the next
system of interest enters the north-central Plains. Differences
exist in how far north or south the surface low tracks, but there
seems to be good agreement on a generally west-to-east storm track.
This system doesn't appear to bring much cold air with it, but a
building ridge across the Northern Rockies may send a cooler air
mass south into the Great Lakes region as the surface low moves east
(ex: 12z GFS). Considering the warm and dry year so far, I favor
the much warmer and farther north surface low track advertised by
the 12z ECMWF over the 12z GFS.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Saturday evening)

TAFs will stay VFR into this evening. This evening a dry cold front
will sweep across the area. Colder air behind this front will lead
to the development of lake-effect clouds with MVFR cigs and off and
on rain showers at IWD and CMX. At SAW, the WNW wind being
downslope, expect it take longer for cigs to reach MVFR and will be
Sat afternoon. All terminals will see gusty west winds tomorrow.

Cold air aloft with a trough moving across the area will bring 20-25
kt WNW winds across the lake tonight through Sunday with some gusts
as high as 30 kts possible on the east half Saturday afternoon and
evening, as well as lake effect rain showers on Saturday. With the
cold air aloft, lake effect rain showers could produce an isolated
waterspout or two, but parameters are still marginal so decided not
to include it in the forecast. Lighter winds are expected Monday and
Tuesday. Stronger NE winds around 20 kts will develop on Wednesday
ahead of the next system.
