Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Marquette MI 414 AM EDT Wed Oct 13 2021 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 257 AM EDT WED OCT 13 2021 Abundant moisture in the low-levels has led to continued -dz across the NW upslope areas this morning. Models suggest a diminishing trend through the next couple hours and by day break, much of the dz should be over with, with lingering lower clouds sticking around through much of the morning. As yesterday's wave continue to lift off to the NE and a more potent wave develops across the Plains, the UP will have weak sfc ridging shifting overhead from SW to NE through the morning and afternoon. This will allow for a drier day, with the gloomy lower clouds dissipating in favor for a mid-level overcast deck. By late aftn, the advertised stronger wave and associated sfc low will be near the ND/SD/MN border lifting NNE. Winds will begin to increase from the SW as model 850mb winds will be near 60kts. Low- level stability should keep these stronger winds elevated, but gusts into the 20 to 25mph range should be expected by evening across the far west. Along these stronger 850mb winds, weak WAA and isentropic ascent will spread across the UP with light sct showers shifting into the UP on a SW to NE track around 00Z. Forcing looks weak and ill-focused as model guidance suggests minimal accums with these showers, maybe a tenth total. A dry slot looks to move in behind these showers quickly, with skies likely beginning to clear just a few hours after showers begin around 3-5Z for IWD. This will spread eastward through the overnight hours, with gusty SE to S winds continuing through the night. By sunrise on Thursday, showers should be out of the cwa, with lower humidity and some blue in the sky. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) Issued at 341 AM EDT WED OCT 13 2021 As discussed above, much of the U.P. starts off the long-term period becoming dry slotted with the passing low heading north along the Manitoba/Ontario border. That said, there could be some lingering low-end PoPs early Thursday in the east as a moisture plume initially moving along northward with the low becomes cutoff and advects eastward away from the parent low. Simultaneously, incoming jet streak will provide a source of lift for whatever moisture remains in the east early in the day. By later Thursday though, look for dry PoPs everywhere until early Friday. The next source of lift will be courtesy of the previously discussed trough axis traversing across the Plains, with another jet streak streaming in on Friday, coinciding with another moisture plume advecting into the area. PoPs though look to generally remain higher in the east half Friday into the weekend with better alignment in key ingredients for precip formation. Once the trough axis itself swings through this weekend, dry conditions return to the U.P. late Sunday into the start of next week. The region will see a brief visit from a ridge before the next approaching system from the west late Tuesday into mid-week, but there's clear model divergence in solutions, so difficult to say with high confidence what type of track it'll end up taking. Temperatures take a dip toward normal after tomorrow as cooler air advects into the area. But, the colder temps hold off on arriving until the aforementioned crossing of the trough axis, pooling down from the north. It'll be short-lived though, thanks to WAA returning with the aforementioned ridge early next week. Highs tomorrow will range from the upper 60s in the east to upper 50s in the west, widespread 50s Friday into the weekend, and a brief return to more widespread 60s on Monday before the next cooldown. The lows will be the more noticeable change, with lots of 30s and 40s emerging through the forecast period. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night) Issued at 112 AM EDT WED OCT 13 2021 Abundant low-level moisture will result in LIFR conditions prevailing at SAW until late Wed morning when improvement to low MVFR is expected. LIFR conditions at IWD/CMX will continue. A period of VFR conditions is expected at all terminals briefly this afternoon before falling back into MVFR to IFR as a sfc low pressure passes to the west. && .MARINE...(For the 4 AM Lake Superior forecast issuance) Issued at 257 AM EDT WED OCT 13 2021 As a strong sfc low develops and lifts NNE through the Dakotas today, easterly winds will begin to ramp up this aftn across western Lake Superior, with gusts approaching 30 kts. As strong winds move overhead by this evening, stability over the lake should limit most of these winds from reaching the lake level, but a few gale force gusts are possible. As the low continues north, winds will veer to the SE, increasing up to 30 knots across the central and eastern half of the lake after dark. Similar story with the stability across the central and east...frequent gusts to 30 kts are expected, but a few gale force gusts at the higher obs platforms should also be expected. The low will continue north overnight tonight as winds veer to the SW with gusts up to 30 kts continuing across the west and central through the day on Thursday.
