.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 508 AM EDT SUN APR 25 2021

Today, sfc high pressure will be building in from the west and
increasingly confluent flow aloft will lead to enhanced subsidence
as low clouds and any remaining flurries will scour out over the
east half this morning. High pressure will remain the dominant
feature maintaining dry conditions with sunny skies for much of the
cwa through the day. Increasing WAA/isentropic lift could lead to an
increase in mid clouds late in day over the west half. North to
northeast wind off Lake Superior and chilly air mass in place will
keep high temperatures unseasonably cool with readings ranging from
the 30s across the east and north-central to the 40s across the west
and south-central. Despite dry air mass, dewpoints lowering near the
single digits and min RH values dropping in the 20 to 25 pct range
across much of the west half interior this afternoon, suspect fire
wx concerns should be essentially nil with recent light pcpn, light
winds, and cooler temperatures.

Tonight, strengthening waa/isentropic ascent regime as viewed on the
290K and 295 sfcs will spread ne into the western Great Lakes ahead
of the advancing warm front from the Central Plains/Lower Midwest.
Clouds will spread across the rest of the cwa in the evening, but
antecedant dry air mass will delay pcpn onset and also lead to some
ptype issues later tonight due to evaporative cooling. Expect some
pcpn to spread into mainly the west and south central portion of the
cwa late tonight. Continued trend from previous fcst of siding
toward the slower solutions for pcpn onset. Fcst soundings are
suggestive of mainly -sn at onset with a transition to ip late
tonight. There may be a brief period of -fzra for some areas, but
even if it did occur, it would likely not cause any issues due to
-sn falling prior. Expect min temps ranging from the low to mid
20s east and north central to the lower 30s far west and far south
central.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 407 AM EDT SUN APR 25 2021

At the beginning of the extended period the synoptic scale pattern
will feature troughing on both coasts and ridging across the
Plains/Midwest. The western trough/central ridge is expected to
become less amplified as it shifts east over the next week with
ridging building across the western US. However, the pattern
characterized by coastal troughing and central US ridging appears
to reload by the end of the extended period. Overall, a period of
active weather embedded within a strong warm air advection regime
is expected early this week with generally quieter weather late in
the week. Despite strong WAA aloft, cloud cover and above normal
precipitation chances should keep surface temperatures near to
below normal through most of the week.

The long term begins with an impressive warm air advection regime
moving across the CWA. WAA induced isentropic lift/frontogenesis
should result in an area of showery precipitation on Monday morning.
P-type issues exist given a very dry antecedent air mass beneath
an impressive warm nose near 800 mb, but p-types transitioning
from snow to sleet to rain seems like the most likely outcome. A
brief period of -ZR can't be completely ruled out, but coverage
and associated impacts are expected to be negligible.

Attention quickly transitions from p-type issues to continued
precipitation chances and potential for thunderstorms Monday evening
(west) through Tuesday evening (east). 4-24 12z NAEFS analysis
indicated precipitable water and integrated water vapor transport
values exceeding the 90th percentile by 00Z Tuesday. Furthermore,
a ~50 knot low level jet moves over our CWA Monday night beneath
reasonably steep (~7 C/km) mid-level lapse rates. This combination
appears likely to result in MUCAPE values exceeding 1000 J/kg
amidst relatively weak effective shear (~30 knots). While this
environment seems unlikely to produce severe thunderstorms a few
strong storms with small hail or graupel are plausible. NAM
guidance has been consistently bullish with MUCAPE values
exceeding 2000 J/kg that could support more vigorous updrafts.
Thunderstorm chances appear to diminish on Tuesday, but forecaster
confidence in frontal position is low. A slower cold front
passage could allow for some diurnal destabilization and/or
convective development across southern/eastern locations.

The post-frontal air mass is not particularly cold, but northerly
winds coming off Lake Superior should result in widespread cloud
cover and chilly temperatures on Wednesday. A positively tilted
trough axis is expected to move through the CWA on Thursday that
should usher in a reinforcing shot of cooler air. Model spread
increases behind this trough with the operational CMC/ECMWF showing
a prolonged stretch of cool/cloudy weather whereas the GFS shows a
rapid warm up into the 70s for next weekend. Ensemble mean guidance
from the various agencies favors the warmer GFS solution, but the
ongoing stretch of cool/cloudy/damp weather makes me skeptical of a
rapid warm up.

VFR conditions at all TAF sites will lower to MVFR late tonight with
the onset of light snow before changing over to a wintry mix as a
warm front lifts northward. MVFR conditions and pcpn are expected to
occur just before or around sunrise at IWD and a couple hours after
sunrise at CMX and SAW. 40 to 45 knot winds at around 2000ft abv the
sfc may lead to some LLWS late tonight as the front approaches, but
current guidance suggest some of these will mix through the boundary
layer, limiting the LLWS potential. Will leave it out of the TAFs at
this time.

As ridging builds in from the west this morning, winds should
decrease blo 20 knots across the entire lake by afternoon. The
pressure gradient increases tonight as Superior gets between high
pressure to the east and a developing low pressure across the
Central Plains. As this system lifts NE, SE winds will increase
across the eastern half of the lake, with a few gale force gusts to
35 knots possible Monday afternoon and evening. By Tuesday, winds
relax blo 20 knots and are expected to remain blo 20 knots through
the rest of the fcst period.

...WINTRY MIX OF SNOW AND SLEET EXPECTED MONDAY MORNING...

A warm front will lift north through Upper Michigan late
tonight/early Monday morning, initially bringing accumulating wet
snow of 1 to 2 inches for the morning commute. This snow is
expected to transition to sleet and some freezing rain before
becoming all rain by the afternoon. This combination will lead to
a slippery morning commute. Motorists are encouraged to slow their
speeds and plan on a longer than normal commute.
