.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)

Overall a quiet day across the forecast area. Synoptically, the
region has found itself caught between an upstream ridge over
central North America and a nor'easter like system off the east
coast. This has largely kept the region under northerly flow today.
A weak shortwave seen in GOES Water Vapor imagery has streamed in
some mid-level clouds into western Lake Superior. Additionally, some
low cloud cover has moved into the central and eastern portions of
Lake Superior and along the lakeshores from Marquette eastward.
Daytime highs so far have climbed into the 40s and even some low 50s
across some of the interior sites. By the lakeshores, the cooler
northerly flow has kept temps in the 30s. Deep mixing has allowed
dewpoints to drop into the teens and even a few single digits in the
interior west. RH values in these spots have fallen into the low to
mid 20s with even some teens mixed in.
Tonight, the large scale pattern doesn't change much and I expect
another quiet night across the region. With light winds and mostly
clear skies, expecting temps to be on the colder side. Ended up
mixing in some lower temps with the NBM 10th percentile to capture
the colder spots that overperform guidance on nights like these in
the interior west. This would bring lows down to the low to mid 20s
with a few high teens possible. By the lakeshores, maintained higher
temps near 30F given the moderating effect of the water. RH
recoveries are expected to be good tonight, topping out in the 70s
and 80s in today's dry spots.
Tomorrow, southwesterly flow is expected to develop ahead of a cold
front approaching from the west. With partly cloudy to clear skies
expected, this should allow temps to climb to upper 50s to near 60F
for much of the region. Lake breeze off Lake Superior will likely
prevent the northern lakeshore communities from climbing too high,
but still expect some mid 50s to be possible. Model soundings show
another deep mixing day, and trended dewpoints down using NBM 10th
percentile to better reflect the dry air mixing to the surface. Cold
front approaching from the west will slowly move across the western
portions of Lake Superior toward the end of the day tomorrow. Out
ahead of the front, rain showers look possible and could reach the
western lakeshores by late afternoon/early evening.

A weak shortwave disturbance will be exiting the Upper Michigan area
by Sunday morning. As this shortwave continues to propagate to the
east and further downstream, warm air advection will begin to
approach the area as winds shift to the southwest throughout the
day. This will be in response to a surface low that will be near the
International Falls area on Sunday morning as it advances eastward
toward Lake Superior. As this surface low continues to propagate
east, and reach the open waters of Lake Superior, all of Upper
Michigan will be in the warm sector. Temperatures will quickly warm
at the surface, and would not be surprised to see areas inland
across Upper Michigan approach the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. As
the surface low intensifies, that will tighten the pressure gradient.
Breezy winds of 15 to 25mph appear favorable in areas that have a
downslope component. Depending on how quickly the daytime heating
occurs, this may create an earlier arrival of the lake breeze
onshore along the northern borders adjacent to Lake Superior.
The surface low will have a cold front approaching the western
borders of Upper Michigan by Sunday evening. Ahead of this cold
front, clouds will increase by mid to late afternoon, thus limiting
the heating for the day on the western edge of our forecast area.
Conversely, we can expect areas in the south central and in the east
that are inland to see the mildest temperatures. Short-range
guidance has the approximate cold FROPA occurring near 0Z Monday in
our western forecast zones, and closer to 12Z Monday for the eastern
regions of the forecast area. Precipitation is expected to start off
as rain because of the mild afternoon maximums. Something to
consider is that soundings are signaling an inverted-V for areas
across Upper Michigan. This may delay precipitation reaching the
surface as the parcel takes time to saturate due to evaporational
cooling. Not a high level of concern at this time, but the
precipitation may start off as virga, creating some gusty winds late
Sunday afternoon and into the overnight hours. Expect precipitation
to continue as rain until the colder air is advected into the
region, causing a gradual changeover to snow showers Sunday night
into Monday morning.
As the surface low exits the area further to the east, the CAA from
850mb on Monday will keep temperatures chilly as temperatures aloft
will be in the -10C to -12C range. Winds from the northwest could
create some weak lake enhanced or lake effect snow showers for areas
adjacent to Lake Superior. The onshore flow combined with CAA will
result in temperatures not rising much above the freezing mark for
several areas, with the exception of south central Upper Michigan
staying in the lower 40s.
The Great Lakes will remain active with weather over the medium to
extended range forecast period. Several shortwave disturbances
riding along upper level ridging from the Pacific NW will combine
with energy remnant from an occluded system over the Hudson Bay
region. This will continue to bring several impulses of cooler air
and light precipitation into the northern Great Lakes as troughiness
persists overall. The next weather system is not being handled well
for next weekend. High discrepancies exist between the placement and
timing of a possible surface low that could approach the area and
bring more rain showers and potentially snow. Maintained a low level
of PoPs because of low confidence in this weather system at this
time. The overall trend continues to look well below normal with
respect to temperatures for the medium range to extended forecast
period, and near neutral chances of precipitation.

Light and variable winds generally 15 kts or less are expected
across the lake tonight and tomorrow. Tomorrow night, an area of low
pressure is progged to develop along a cold front. This will result
in stronger winds developing overnight, particularly as they become
northwesterly behind the low. Confidence is high that winds will
climb to gales of 40 to 45 knots over the central and eastern
portions of the lake during the day on Monday and a gale watch has
been issued. By Monday night, winds are expected to return below
20 knots across the lake and remain there through mid week.
