.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Upper air pattern consists of a 500 mb trough over the Pacific NW
into the Canadian Rockies and a shortwave ridge over the upper Great
Lakes this morning. The trough heads east into the Canadian Prairies
and northern plains tonight with a shortwave affecting the upper
Great Lakes late tonight. Quiet weather in the very near term will
get busier as the wind picks up this afternoon. Tricky forecast with
atmosphere trying to mix out in the low levels this afternoon, but
snow cover and some mid and high clouds will tend to hold
temperatures down a bit. Trimmed temperatures down a few degrees in
the west and by about 5-10 degrees in the east with a cold
trajectory off of Lake Michigan and the snow cover holding them down
as well along with the higher clouds. Have some slight chance pops
in for later tonight. The temperatures and the pops were the major
changes to the going forecast. Looking at waves on Lake Michigan and
bay of Green Bay, they get high enough for Lakeshore flood
advisories.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday)
Issued at 439 PM EDT SUN MAR 28 2021

Models suggest that a progressive pattern will prevail through next
week resulting in large temp variations with mainly light pcpn
chances. A mid/upper level trough moving through the central CONUS
during the middle of the week will give way to ridging from the
Plains to the western Great Lakes toward next weekend.

Monday night into Tuesday, a very tight pressure gradient will
prevail into the evening ahead of the front/trough advancing from MN
to northwest WI. Despite a fairly stable profile beneath the 70 knot
low level jet, gusts into the 40-45 mph range, per forecast momentum
transfer, will remain possible through the evening, especially north
central near Lake Superior. 850-700 mb fgen just behind the sfc
trough will support rain chances spreading into the west late Mon
night and across the rest of the area Tue morning. Gusty west winds
will also develop behind the front, especially over the Keweenaw.
Temps should still climb into the mid 40s before falling off by mid
to late afternoon with increasing CAA.

Tue night through Wednesday night, models were consistent in
bringing a secondary cold front through the northern Great Lakes Tue
night. 850 mb temps dropping to around -18C with nw winds veering
north Wed night with support LES with some accumulations possible as
inversion heights to 7k ft develop. Temps will also drop back into
the mid to upper 20s over the west half with lower 30s over the
southeast.

Thu-Sun, after the sfc ridge moves through Thursday bringing an end
to any LES, increasing southerly flow WAA is expected into Friday
with temps climbing back above normal with highs in the lower 40s
east to lower 50s west. Even though there is some uncertainty with
the mid/upper level ridge position, mainly mild/dry conditions
should prevail into next weekend.

VFR conditions will prevail thru this fcst period at KIWD/KCMX/KSAW.
Passing sfc high pres ridge will result in light winds overnight.
Then today, tightening pres gradient btwn the departing high pres
ridge and strong low pres moving across s central Canada will bring
increasing southerly winds. There may be a brief period of LLWS at
KIWD during the morning before the low levels mix out enough to
begin transporting stronger gusts to the surface and thus
eliminating the strong shear. At the moment, not expecting to hit
LLWS criteria at KCMX/KSAW. During the day, expect gusts to 30-35kt
at KIWD/KSAW and to around 25kt at KCMX. Some stabilization of the
low levels this evening will then lead to LLWS developing at all
terminals.

Very active period will continue for the next several days with
multiple gale events occurring. Next gale looks to occur by this
afternoon across central and eastern Lake Superior with 35-40 knots
from the south and this continue into the evening even in stable
conditions with cold water and warmer air moving over the sfc.
Second gale event gets going late tonight into Tue across the west
and central with winds up to 40 knots from the west southwest. West
gales to 35 knots look likely across the east half Tue evening for
the third event. The low responsible for the second and third events
will move by well to the north of Lake Superior. These are the
strongest wind events for this forecast. Otherwise, winds will
subside to generally 20 kts or less for Thursday and Friday.
