Upper air pattern consists of a 500 mb trough across the upper Great
Lakes region this morning with a trough in the Pacific NW. This
western trough will move to the Lake Winnipeg region 00z Mon. Deeper
moisture and stronger 850-500 mb q-vector convergence remain to the
north of the area late Sunday afternoon. Lake effect snow will
continue to wind down slowly as 850 mb temperatures are around -14C
over Lake Superior and water temperatures are around 4C overnight
before warming on Sunday along with winds turning to the southwest.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday)

Models are in good agreement for the longterm period with a fairly
progressive, but relatively benign period of weather across the
Upper Great Lakes. An anomalously strong and persistent ridge across
the north central Pacific is progged to continue through the fcst
period and to some degree, the rest of the year. This strong ridge
will continue to reinforce downstream troffing across the West
Coast, which will bring some much needed pcpn for much of next week.
A more zonal pattern will remain further downstream across the Upper
Great Lakes with a cutoff, slow-moving trof traversing the southern
CONUS through the first half of the week. As the trof remains off
the West Coast this week, a series of waves and energy will eject
from this trof across the west and cross over the northern CONUS and
Upper Great Lakes, bringing chances for pcpn through out the week.
At this time, there doesn't look to be any significant
accumulations...but there is time for specifics of these waves to
change as better sampling is acquired.
A sfc ridge of high pressure will be stretched from Texas through
Quebec on Sunday night as a shrtwv and associated low pressure
system pass to the north of Lake Superior. This low will bring a
cold front across the UP through Monday aftn before sfc high
pressure moves in from the west Monday night. With this low,
moisture is quite limited and the best forcing remains off to the
north in Ontario, so accums will be minimal at best. As colder air
moves in behind the front, there could be a small window for some
lake-effect, but with the approaching high pressure from the west,
accums appear limited as well.
As the aforementioned high exits Tuesday afternoon, another low-
amplitude wave will pass across the northern CONUS on Tuesday.
Despite a weaker low pressure, another sfc high pressure will be
following closely behind leading to a tighter pressure gradient. As
the associated cold front passes Tuesday night, blustery conditions
are expected Tuesday night. Moisture is a little better with this
system, so better accumulations can be expected. LES will continue
in the NW wind belts following the low, but drier air with the
approaching high pressure will lead to a short duration.
While the broader pattern remains fairly consistent for the second
half of the week, model spread increases for the specifics across
the downstream locations of the persistent ridge/trof feature off
the West Coast. There is some indication that this trof brings a
downstream ridge across the central CONUS, which would bring an end
of the week warm up...as well as a potential low pressure system,
but ensembles and their trends suggest a more progressive pattern,
with ejecting waves to tamper any central CONUS ridging, keeping the
Upper Great Lakes on the cooler side into the weekend.
