.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Starting to sound like a broken record here...but GOES WV imagery
and latest RAP analysis show another low-amplitude shrtwv on the
UP's doorstep, currently over the western arm of Lake Superior. A
sfc ridge of high pressure can be seen exiting east of the UP this
morning as another trof and front (this time a warm front...see not
a broken record) are shifting through MN this morning. WAA and
isentropic ascent are bringing some light snow upstream and this
band of snow is expected to reach IWD over the next 2 hours or so.
Will be another day with only light snow chances as model soundings
suggest only a couple hours of snow with dry low-levels this morning
and mid-level dry air quickly moving in by the afternoon. This is
also seen on radar returns across the west, but no snow showing up
on sfc obs or webcams.

As drier air moves in behind the front this afternoon, there could
be a couple hours of dz/fz, as DGZ saturation is lost...but a 5-6kt
layer remains saturated. With continued WAA and strong winds aloft
bringing some mixing potential, temperatures will climb into the
upper 30s to low 40s across the area. This should lead to minimal
impacts from any fzdz potential.

Winds are a bit complicated with this fcst as boundary layer
stability increasing due to WAA. Model soundings suggest 40kt winds
around 1000-1500ft abv the sfc and confidence is low on potential to
mix into this layer. While I think there will be some gusts to
around 20 or so through the day across the UP, there are a little
better chances to see stronger gusts in downslope locations where
some additional mixing can occur. Those locations would be along the
Gogebic range and in northern Marquette County where we often see SW
WAA winds increase. Cooler air begins to move back in tonight behind
a sfc low passing over northern Lake Superior. With some isallobaric
assistance, expecting some gusty winds to continue right into the
evening hours. There's still some uncertainty on the stability
tonight as CAA isn't that impressive; however, there is a chance for
winds to push 40mph across the Keweenaw if winds can tap into the
50kt winds 1500-2000 ft AGL...but confidence is low to medium.

As inversions continue to lift through the night winds aloft will
begins to relax, but some NW wind lake-effect is expected to
develop, with a mix of rain and snow across the western half of the
UP. Any accumulations are expected to be minimal. As an area of low
pressure moves over the lake tonight, addition moisture and forcing
could bring some light snow/rain showers across the east for a few
hours before mid-levels dry again.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 232 AM EST WED DEC 1 2021

Upper air pattern consists of a 500 mb trough in the ern U.S. and a
ridge across the Rockies into the Pacific NW 12z Thu with a
shortwave in northern B.C. This shortwave will head southeast to
Lake Winnipeg 12z Fri and into the area 00z Sat before moving to New
England by 12z Sat.  This shortwave will keep most of its moisture
and dynamics to the north of the area. Will have some northwest wind
lake effect pops in for Thu with colder air arriving by afternoon
with 850 mb temperatures falling to around -8C over Lake Superior by
18z Thu. Lake effect pcpn will continue for the rest of this
forecast period then.

In the extended, the GFS and ECMWF show a 500 mb trough off the
Pacific NW coast, a trough in the lower Great Lakes 12z Sat. A
shortwave moves into the northern plains 12z Sun and digs into the
lower Great Lakes by 12z Mon. Differences show up 12z Tue with the
Canadian and ECMWF showing a broad trough across all of the U.S.
while the GFS has a stronger trough in the desert sw. The model
solutions come back together again 12z Wed with a deep trough over
the central plains with a shortwave over the upper Great Lakes.
Active pattern continues with temperatures remaining near normal for
this forecast period.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night)
Issued at 1204 AM EST WED DEC 1 2021

VFR conditions will prevail overnight at IWD/CMX/SAW as a sfc high
pres ridge quickly moves across the area. The next disturbance will
then rapidly approach the Upper Great Lakes, spreading some -sn w to
e across Upper MI, beginning around 10z at IWD, around 12z at CMX
and around 14z at SAW. Expect conditions to fall to MVFR with the
snow. The ocnl -sn will only last 2-5hrs at each terminal and will
be followed by IFR cigs and perhaps MVFR vis in BR. Improvement to
MVFR should occur at IWD/CMX mid to late aftn and at SAW later in
evening. A short period of LLWS is expected this morning at IWD and
then at all terminals this evening.

.MARINE...(For the 4 AM Lake Superior forecast issuance)

As a warm front moves over Lake Superior today, stability will begin
to increase as winds aloft strengthen. This will lead to SW winds
with gusts in the mid 20 to 30 kt range. Expect a few south gale
force gusts to 35 knots along the nearshore zones east of Marquette
and across the open lake zones in eastern Lake Superior. As a strong
low pressure system approaches from the west this afternoon, it will
cross over northern Lake Superior tonight, bringing gales to 40
knots across the lake, first from the SW then veering NW overnight.
Confidence is high on gales to 40 kts; however, there is a chance
for some gales to approach 45 kts depending on the stability as
cooler air begins to move over the lake, especially across the
central and eastern portions of the lake from around 11 PM to 5 AM
EST.

Gales will relax from west to east through Thursday morning, with
winds remaining from the NW in the mid 20 kt range through Thursday
night. As another quick ridge moves over the lake Friday, winds will
be on the lighter side, below 20 kts early Friday morning through
mid afternoon Friday. Another quick moving low will move over the
lake Friday evening, with NW winds to around 30 knots Friday night.
Winds relax again Saturday through Sunday morning.
