.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 307 PM EDT SAT OCT 30 2021

With mid-level ridging remaining over the area today, dry conditions
have prevailed. Low clouds plaguing the west and central areas this
morning are dissipating. Eastern zones have been clear all day where
highs have reached well into the 50s and probably have hit lower
60s at a few locations.

Tonight, the upstream mid-upper trough over the Northern Plains will
shift e tonight with a shortwave approaching Lake Superior by 12z
Sun. Associated cold front will reach western Upper MI around
midnight and exit the e around 12z. With decnet 12hr 500mb height
falls of 130-180m over western Lake Superior/western Upper MI
tonight, sct -shra should develop with the passing cold front. Winds
will become breezy after fropa, especially across the Keweenaw where
gusts to 30-35mph are expected. Lows tonight will be mainly in the
30s.

Sunday, As a cold front pushes through the area, expect scattered to
numerous rain showers to continue to blossom across the central and
east in the morning and afternoon as 850 mb temps lower to around -
6C over Lake Superior by late in the day. Best shower coverage
(numerous) will be over the eastern zones due to enhancement
potential from shortwave and longer fetch across the lake. Highs
Sunday look to be in the 40s, with the low 40s expected in the west
and high 40s in the east due to the cloud cover and the CAA timing
asscociated with the fropa. As we head toward evening trick-or-
treaters may have to contend with some snow mixing in with the rain
over inland higher terrain western locations.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday)

It will be cool in the extended with high temperatures 5 degrees or
so below average though mid-week. Large scale troughing over eastern
Canada and the Great Lakes will dominate the forecast with a closed
off upper level low moving from northern Ontario into northern
Quebec though Tuesday. Multiple shortwaves rotating around the low
will bring reinforcing cool air into the area and keep lake effect
precipitation going, mainly in the west to northwest lake effect
belts. Ensemble are showing mean 500mb negative height anomalies
associated with the troughing over the area begin to give way to
positive height anomalies late in the week with deterministic models
showing ridging over the plains and western Great Lakes by next
weekend.

The main periods of lake effect precipitation appears to be on
Sunday night into Monday and again on Tuesday night into Wednesday
morning. Cold air advection will continue Sunday night behind the
front that will have push through early Sunday. Model bufr soundings
are showing lapse rates becoming steep through the low to mid levels
with no strong inversion present until you get all the way up to the
tropopause. Lake induced equilibrium levels reach upwards of 20kft
Sunday night though Monday before we see warming in the mid-levels
on Monday night into Tuesday. A shortwave will move though the area
late Tuesday night into Wednesday which will again cool the mid
levels, steepen mid-level lapse rates and bring lake induced
inversion heights up to 15 kft. Thereafter warm air advection and
dry low levels should help bring and end to the lake effect showers
on Thursday. Sfc to 850mb deltaT will be in the 15 to 20C range.

Despite some periods of high inversion heights and strong deltaTs
the lake effect precipitation will be fighting against low level dry
air with most of the soundings exhibiting an inverted-v sounding
though the period. 0-1km RH is generally between 60 and 75% with
higher RH in the upslope areas of the west. Kept with the blended
solution for QPF amounts which translates to a few inches of
snowfall possible over several hours at times across mainly the
higher elevations for the western and central U.P.
Overall impacts will be low visibilities and possibly snow/slush
covered roads during periods of heavier snow showers but not
expecting any widespread impacts at this time.

The NBM is coming in with a mention of thunder for Sunday night into
early Tuesday with the robust instability. With uncertainty in the
amount of the lake induced instability that will be realized given
the drier air in the low levels, limited the mention of thunder to
the far east with the longer fetch and possibly convergence.

There could be some minor beach erosion on Sunday night with waves
continuing to build over Lake Superior. Waves will approach 9 feet
from Ontonagon north along the west shore of the Keweenaw. Waves to
13 feet will be possible east of Munising but currently forecast to
remain below advisory criteria.

MVFR cigs dissipating at the western terminals early this
afternoon and will probably scattered out at KSAW by 21Z.
Cold front then will sweep across the terminals tonight, bringing
a return to MVFR cigs. Could be a few -shra overnight at CMX.
Post frontal nw winds will be gusty, strongest at CMX where gusts
to 30kt are possible.

Light winds (less than 15 kts) with sfc high pres ridge in place
should continue into early evening. Tonight, a cold front will sweep
across Lake Superior, bringing a wind shift to nw winds of 20-30kt.
Gales are expected over eastern Lake Superior on Sunday so have
posted a gale warning there. NW winds will continue to gust 20-30kt
into Mon. Winds will then gradually diminish with gusts falling off
to blo 20kt on Tue and remaining under 20kt for Wed.
