What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

Area forecast discussion, Sep 20, 6:24 AM EDT, 4 hours 8 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Marquette MI
624 AM EDT Mon Sep 20 2021

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 242 AM EDT MON SEP 20 2021

Upper air pattern consists of a 500 mb trough in the Rockies and a
shortwave in the mid Mississippi River Valley this morning with a
ridge in the ern U.S. The shortwave heads northeast this morning and
affects the ern cwa this afternoon with the trough moving into the
northern plains. The trough then moves into the upper Great Lakes
12z Tue. The two systems of the shortwave and upper trough will
combine over the cwa for this period to produce this next rain event
with 850-500 mb q-vector convergence moving through the area this
afternoon and tonight. Kept the trend of delaying the pops from both
systems a bit and have it dry for most of this morning for the
southern system before both systems try to bring in some pops this
afternoon. Have a linear progression of pops with a line of
convection moving across the cwa tonight which was already in the
forecast. Overall, just a few minor changes to the going forecast.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 234 AM EDT MON SEP 20 2021

Medium range models are in decent agreement through this upcoming
week on the general mid-level height pattern as temperatures are
expected to be near- to above-normal through the weekend. Ridging
both up and downstream with troffing over the central CONUS will
start the longterm period as the UP cools back down towards normal
from near-record temps on Monday. This trof will attempt to push
east through the middle of the week, running into the ridge off the
East Coast. Some models are suggesting this trof to transition into
a cutoff upper-level low across the Ohio River Valley and
Appalachians by Thursday morning. All models are then suggesting
this upper-level low/trof to lift NE through the Great Lakes region
Thursday night into Friday morning as another wave drops south along
the eastern edge of the upstream ridge. Despite troffing remaining
over the Great Lakes region through the week, minimal pcpn chances
are expected outside Monday night/Tuesday morning as elongated
ridging will move over wern Upper Michigan on Wednesday and the
upper-level low track looks to remain a little too far to the east
to bring much pcpn back across the UP.

On Tuesday morning, a cold front will be halfway across the UP as a
few showers will remain along this front. With 850mb temps falling
to around 3C, some post-frontal, lake-enhanced showers will also be
possible across the west. These showers would likely be short-lived
as an elongated shrtwv ridge will approach from the west with
backing winds to the SW and some light WAA by Tuesday night. Highs
for the day will likely be before sunrise for parts of the UP, with
the west remaining in the upper 50s and east falling into the upper
50s by the aftn. By Tuesday night, sfc high pressure will be
shifting overhead as winds slacken leading to decent cooling
conditions. Lows will fall into the 30s across the west and low 40s
east.

Sfc high pressure will remain over Upper Michigan Wednesday into
Thursday as the upper-level trof/low remain over the Ohio River
Valley. Across wern Upper Michigan, heights will rise slightly as
some ridging tries to sneak in. Medium range models vary in the
degree of 850mb cooling across the GL region during the middle of
the week; however, ensembles means suggest 850mb temps will be near
3-4C Wednesday into the evening. With light winds and expected clear
skies, temperatures are expected to fall into the mid to upper 30s
west and upper 30s to near 40 east. GFS seems to favor a colder
soln, and lows tend to fall blo guidance this time of year during
excellent radiational cooling nights. Given the time range, opted to
not include any widespread frost mentions at this time...will wait
for another cycle or so.

The rest of the week into the weekend will feature a developing
cutoff low off the California Coast as broad ridging builds over
western NOAM. Downstream NW flow across the Great Lakes region with
a few embedded waves will bring the next pcpn chances locally,
though nothing too significant is expected as moisture is limited
due to cutoff low over the Ohio River Valley through the week. These
trofs will bring another quick shot of slightly blo normal temps for
the weekend before models suggest another warmup to start next week.
&&

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Tuesday morning)
Issued at 624 AM EDT MON SEP 20 2021

VFR conditions will prevail at IWD/CMX/SAW thru at least late aftn.
LLWS will abate during the morning as daytime heating builds mixed
layer, resulting in some of the stronger winds mixing down to the
sfc. Approaching cold front will reach western Upper MI mid to late
evening. Associated shra, some tsra, should arrive at IWD around 00z
