Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Marquette MI 304 PM EDT Mon Sep 13 2021 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday) Issued at 304 PM EDT MON SEP 13 2021 A good mix of sunshine clouds was observed today across the forecast area. The cloud cover evolved from a low strata deck to of a cu field through the day. Highs so far have climbed into the mid to upper 60s, with a few 70s here and there. For the remainder of the day, these calm conditions are expected to continue into the evening hours. Attention then turns to a shortwave currently progressing eastward through the north-central Plains. As the wave approaches, the open wave will take on more of an negative tilt as a surface low deepens. The low is progged to lift through WI tonight and into the forecast area by morning. Out ahead of the low, strong isentropic lift concurrent with strong mid-level moisture transport and upper level diffluence will support widespread rain showers with some embedded thunderstorms lifting into the west after midnight. As the low lifts closer, showers/storms will progress into the central by early morning and the east by sunrise. Regarding the thunderstorms, there is a consistent signal among the guidance that some stronger storms will be possible across the south given the timing of the LLJ, veering wind profile, 50kts deep shear and modest elevated instability. Primary hazards would be hail and stronger winds. With PWATs climbing near 1.5 inches, total rainfall amounts for the event across the region could come in near an inch with isolated areas higher across the west. As the low deepens and progresses through, tightening pressure gradient and potentially an isallobaric enhancement will make for some gusty winds. Stronger winds near the lakes are expected across the east, with some gusts approaching 30 mph near the immediate lakeshore. Lows tonight should be on the mild side given the WAA ahead the low and expanding cloud shield. In general, lows in the 50s are expected. Tomorrow, highs should top out in the 60s. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 547 AM EDT MON SEP 13 2021 The medium range to extended forecast continues to be progged as active, with above average temperatures and precipitation favored the next 6-10 days. Upper level flow will continue to remain progressive, with several shortwave disturbances moving from west to east as we see a cyclical wave pattern of brief ridging, and then temporary periods with rain shower activity. Starting on Tuesday, we will see the quick-moving surface low sweeping across Upper Michigan. Model guidance now being just outside of the 24 hour window is in better agreement regarding precipitation timing, location, and possible rainfall totals. Due to the progressive nature of the flow aloft, we will see the surface low quickly propagate to the east, along with its narrow window of precipitation. The east half of Upper Michigan will see rain showers quickly wind down after sunrise on Tuesday. A surface cold front will move across the cwa during the afternoon, with breezy winds ahead of the cold front of 15-25mph possible...mainly for the east half of Upper Michigan during the afternoon before winds wind down quickly by evening across the area. QPF totals for areas that have the heaviest rain showers could reach locally up to an inch. Flooding is not anticipated due to the quick-moving system. As the upper level trough axis sweeps across the area Tuesday afternoon and evening, a couple of stray rain showers are possible. Surface high pressure will move across the area quickly Tuesday night through Thursday morning, keeping the region dry temporarily. This surface high pressure will make it a comfortable day for Wednesday with regard to afternoon highs, and cool overnight lows will return through Thursday morning as sky cover remains limited to none. An upper level ridge pattern will amplify slightly on Thursday over the Great Lakes, resulting in weak WAA. This will bump up the afternoon high temperatures for Thursday as southerly flow returns to the area, resulting in above average readings. The ridge pattern will quickly break down as another shortwave disturbance is signaled to develop a surface low over the Dakotas, and toward Upper Michigan by Thursday night into Friday. This will bring the area another round of showers and chance for isolated thundershowers. For the weekend, model guidance continues its trend of disagreement. The GFS is aggressive regarding strong WAA, and a possible return of summer- like temperatures Saturday and Sunday. However, the Canadian/Euro are trending toward a more conservative signal, with the WAA taking a little longer to arrive, and not as warm. Upper Michigan will see afternoon highs likely approaching the middle 70s to lower 80s from Friday through next weekend if the guidance continues to trend toward this signal. By the start of next week, the upper level ridge resulting in the warmer temperatures will potentially break down as another shortwave disturbance approaches Upper Michigan. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon) Issued at 145 PM EDT MON SEP 13 2021 Some dinural cu across the region may move over KSAW and KCMX, but overall VFR conditions are expected for the remainder of today. Tonight, a passing vigorous shortwave will support a deepening surface low to lift northeast through the region. Overnight, showers will spread through the region, and some thunderstorms will be possible at KSAW. Ceilings are expected to deteriorate to IFR by morning at all terminals. LIFR conditions will be possible at KSAW.
