Satellite and ground lightning observations show lightning across
the area diminishing, with most pockets of lightning near Duluth,
north-central WI, and over far eastern Lake Superior. Expect TS
activity to continue diminishing early this morning as forcing for
ascent along the front weakens. Radar shows most of the rainfall
happening in a line from far eastern Lake Superior along the
Canadians shoreline into north-central WI. This rainfall is expected
to continue heading east throughout the morning and be out of our
area this afternoon. Indeed, model guidance shows the front
associated with the rainfall dying out by this afternoon once it
reaches the eastern Lake Superior shore.

Infrared imagery shows a low pressure currently over the Central
Plains. As the front moves through and dies out today, expect this
low to slowly lift towards our area. This low should bring abundant
Gulf of Mexico moisture across the CWA, and may bring back rain
showers near the WI border as early as late afternoon/early evening
today. There may be a slight chance for some thunderstorms along the
WI border tonight, as some models have MUCAPEs approaching 1000J/kg.
As the low continues approaching the U.P. tonight, expect rainfall
to spread northward across the area. However, rainfall may not occur
at all, as some model solutions show precipitation limited to
northern WI and northeastern MN. It will depend upon where the left
exit region of the jet sets up; the further east it is, the more
likely it is that we will see rainfall across the U.P., in
particular across the central and east.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

Weather across Upper MI during the long term period will be affected
by a blocky flow regime. A strong positive height anomaly (~400m
above normal at 500mb) that has developed over the N Atlantic in the
vcnty of southern Greenland will weaken some as it retrogrades to
northern Quebec over the next several days. It will then strengthen
back toward +400m at 500mb this weekend into early next week.
Meanwhile, ridging well upstream over the N Pacific will drive
shortwaves se into the Pacific NW thru at least the remainder of
this week. These shortwaves will then track into the central U.S.
This is where the blocky downstream flow owing to the positive
height anomaly retrograding to ne Canada will then complicate the
evolution of those waves. There are basically 2 outcomes. The waves
will either lift n up the w side of the anomaly, passing across the
western Great Lakes/northern Ontario to Hudson Bay or be forced to
undercut it, tracking thru the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley. The first of
the upstream waves will move out across the central Plains Wed. With
ridging over the eastern U.S. linked up with the N Atlantic ridging
and another upstream shortwave dropping se toward the western
Plains, the first wave should be forced to lift slowly across the
Upper Great Lakes late this week. The second will then takes its
place over the Mid or Upper Mississippi Valley to start the weekend.
A third wave will then drop into the Pacific NW Sat and reach the
Northern Plains early next week. By this time, the building anomaly
across northern Quebec will begin to exert influence and may force
the 2nd and 3rd waves to undercut it. End result of this flow
evolution will be an extended period of unsettled weather (periods
of shra) for Upper MI thru the rest of this week and on into at
least early next week. Probably won't see any days being a total
washout, and there may even be a day or two where much of the day
will be dry. After a dry winter/early spring, the rainfall is
needed. Going back to early Dec, pcpn is running 70-90pct of normal
over large portions of Upper MI with some areas at 50-70pct of
normal. As for temps, the blocky flow to the ne and mean troffing
over western Canada will prevent any intrusion of late season cold
air into the area. So, while the unsettled pattern will result in a
trend toward cooler conditions during the long term period,
particularly starting late week when the first system reaches the
area, temps will still be above the early to mid Apr normals.

Beginning Wed, a mid-level low will be drifting across the central
Plains. Ahead of it, deep southerly flow will extend northward to
Upper MI. Main push of isentropic ascent will be lifting n of
Upper MI during the morning. There is an overlap of isentropic
ascent and better mid-level fgen over western Upper MI/western
Lake Superior, so best potential of shra (maybe a few rumbles of
thunder) during the morning will be across the w and nw fcst area.
Persistent zone of fgen to the w and nw will continue to favor
western Lake Superior for shra thru the day. Otherwise, looks like
conditions will trend toward dry weather from s to n fairly
quickly during the morning. Temps are a challenge as 850mb temps
will be running around 10C. If sufficient breaks in the cloud
cover develop, temps could easily surge above 70F as a number of
raw model temp fields and bias corrected temps show. For now,
raised high temps to mostly the 60s F (low 60s e and mid/upper 60s
w). Conditions will be cooler along the Great Lakes where e to se
winds have an onshore component. Winds will back further to the
ne along the western shore of Upper MI, so cooler conditions
expected there as well. Cooling will be most significant across
the Keweenaw where temps will range from the lwr 40s lakeside on
the eastern side to around 50 F on the w side.

The Plains mid-level low will then drift toward the Mid-Mississippi
Valley by Thu morning. 850-700mb moisture transport supports better
chc of shra across western Upper MI Wed night then spreading
eastward on Thu. Forcing is not particularly strong or focused,
so not expecting widespread or extended periods of shra. With the
mid- level low then drifting n, tracking thru WI on Fri and then
lifting n of Lake Superior Sat morning, expect sct -shra to
continue across the fcst area. Although precipitable water running
around 1 inch/250pct of normal supports the potential of hvy
rainfall, lack of well-organized forcing will work against
significant rainfall.

While there may be diminished coverage of shra Sat/Sun as first
weakening mid-level low lifts n of the area, track of the second
wave moving across the Plains is increasingly uncertain in the
blocky flow regime. It could very well bring renewed shra coverage
to the area by Sun if it tracks into the northern Great Lakes. The
third wave follows into the Northern Plains late Sun and then
probably into the Great Lakes region early next week. For now, fcst
will carry mostly low chc pops most days Sat thru Tue. Certainly
expect that some of those time periods will need much higher pops as
those days move closer to the shorter range of the fcst when
pattern becomes more predictable.

MVFR to IFR tempo conditions will remain at CMX and IWD for the next
few hours as onshore winds are bringing in the marine layer and low
clouds, otherwise sct cigs will bring VFR conditions. A lake breeze
is about to move through SAW over the next hour, which will bring
some sct diurnal cu through the terminal and northerly winds. As a
system lifts from the Central Plains tonight, a warm, moist air mass
will bring -shra and IFR cigs through the night. There is a chance
for some LIFR cigs at times and IFR vsbys. By tomorrow morning,
Upper Michigan will be within a dry slot of the system as cigs lift
and pcpn comes to an end.

A few gusts up to 30 knots from the SE are possible in the east
early this morning as a front moves through the lake until this
afternoon. Around the time the front reaches the far eastern Lake
this afternoon, expect winds to decrease to 20 knots or less as this
front falls apart. Tonight, winds should become northeasterly as a
low pressure slowly approaches the region. Expect northeasterly wind
gusts up to 30 knots possible in the western lake by Wednesday
morning, increasing to a few gale force gusts up to 35 knots by
Wednesday afternoon (which could continue until Wednesday night).
The eastern lake could see easterly winds up to 25 knots Wednesday
afternoon. Expect wind directions to stay the same Thursday, with 20
to 25 knot winds anticipated across the lake. Once the low progs
into the area Friday, expect winds to become 20 knots or less.
