.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday)

Water vapor satellite shows a quickly maturing cyclone near the
Ontario/Quebec border this afternoon. This is the system that
brought a few inches of slushy snow to most of the area this
morning. As it continues to deepen, the tightening pressure gradient
along with CAA in the cyclonic flow behind the low are keeping
conditions breezy. There have been a few 35+ mph gusts today.
However, with the low pulling away and ridging working in from the
west, gusts will continue to diminish as the afternoon goes on.
There is also enough remnant moisture that in combination with a bit
of lake enhancement and broad upslope NW flow, as well as some
diurnally driven instability, there are flurries/light snow showers
over much of the U.P. These will persist for the next few hours but
won't amount to much.
Tonight, ridging currently over Minnesota per MSAS analysis will
slide east, leading to winds going completely calm and skies
clearing. With today's snowfall still fresh, there could be
significant PBL decoupling and thus chilly temps for lows. Went with
the NBM 25th percentile which gives lows in the teens virtually
everywhere. Would not be surprised to see a few single digit
readings in the notoriously cold spots.
But by tomorrow afternoon those temps will feel like a distant
memory, as strong WAA overspreading the area leads to skyrocketing
temps. Forecast right now is for highs ranging from around 50 east
to the mid 60s interior west. A 40-50 kt LLJ is progged to
overspread the U.P. tomorrow morning leading to deep mechanical
mixing. Initially there will be a band of mid-level clouds with the
warm front aloft. But once those clear in the afternoon temps will
be off to the races. The only caveat is the snow cover. Normally, a
snow cover that's even a couple days old would be crusty enough this
time of year to not have much of an effect wrt albedo, especially
once it's fallen off the pine tree limbs leaving their darker
surfaces exposed. But the snow cover tomorrow will still be somewhat
fresh, and may still be clinging to the trees until the wind picks
up later in the morning. Overall, still think it will be more a
typical warmer-than-guidance spring day, but if temps enough up
verifying lower than forecast, that's probably why. Speaking of the
wind, that will be the other main story tomorrow. Although profiles
don't show the PBL with a somewhat neutral lapse rate, rather than
one that is purely mixed, there should still be enough mixing to
transport some 30-40 mph gusts down to surface by afternoon. That
will especially be true in the favored south wind downslope areas,
where 40 mph gusts are likely. The stiff southerly wind will likely
build waves on Lake Michigan to 12 feet or higher, so a Lakeshore
Flood Advisory may end up being needed for Delta and Schoolcraft
counties by late tomorrow afternoon.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

A temperature rollercoaster will continue through the longterm
period as Upper Michigan sees a chance for precipitation along a
cold front on Tuesday and some light lake-effect chances Wednesday
into early Thursday.
A building ridge with increasing 850mb temps from downsloping
through the Dakotas on Monday will bring highs as much as 20 degrees
above normal. Blocked flow downstream will force an approaching
low to the north through Canada as it brings a potent cold front
across the Upper Midwest and Upper Michigan on Tuesday morning. A
secondary cold front with a reinforcing shot of arctic air on
Wednesday morning will bring sfc temps into the 20s as model 850mb
temps are near -18 to -20 C. NW flow with cooler air will persist
through Thursday morning as this trof's progression slows down as
a strong ridge and anomalously positive heights remain locked
over the N Atlantic and Greenland. This will bring weak ridging
over the central CONUS as ridging over the N Pacific pushes a trof
into the Pacific NW.
First shot of colder air is brief as models suggest SW winds to move
in Sunday night bringing 850mb temps up to 8 to 10C depending on
your model preference. This will bring gusty winds from the S
through the day and temperatures pushing 60 across the west half and
to around 50 across the east as Lk Michigan keeps things cooler.
Continued to increased the gusts on Monday, despite some increased
BL stability. Based on model soundings, initialized with the 90th
pctl for gusts on Monday with some minor localization tweaks...like
in downslope-favored areas as gusts commonly exceed guidance in
southerly WAA events in these locations. Not out of the question
some locations in the higher terrain of Baraga and Marquette
Counties as well as along the Superior shoreline east of Marquette
see gusts push 40mph in the late aftn/evening. These strong
southerly winds will also bring a concern for some lakeshore
flooding and beach erosion on the Lake Michigan shorelines Monday
evening.
May temperatures come back down to March, or late February standards
for Tuesday as a sharp cold front passes across the UP. This will
bring another chance for some light pcpn across Upper Michigan, with
some snow mixing in at times...but don't go busting out your rulers
for this one. Model 850mb winds along the cold front are around
50kts and some model soundings have some of these stronger winds
mixing down to the sfc. While it will be blustery for most of the UP
on Tuesday, the Keweenaw could see some westerly wind gusts push 40
mph Tuesday evening.
A secondary cold front will shift across the UP late Tuesday
night...this time bringing a bigger punch in the form of an arctic
air mass. With gusty winds in store, this one will feel a bit more
like winter as wind chills fall into the single digits by late
Tuesday night/early Wed and remain in the low teens for much of the
day Wednesday. NW flow and 850mb temps near -17C will bring a chance
for some light LES through Thursday morning, but given the pretty
dry airmass and model soundings with this airmass, not looking like
there will be a ton of accumulation.
Weak ridging starts to move back in Thursday into Friday across the
central CONUS, but with downstream blocking in place, Upper Michigan
will be in a bit of a holding pattern with above normal temperatures
and a few small chances of pcpn through the weekend.

clearing out of the terminals this afternoon. This evening, winds
will go light and skies will clear as a high pressure ridge passes
overhead. Tomorrow, strong southerly winds will develop in the
morning. There may be a brief period of LLWS at IWD before the low
levels mix out enough to begin transporting stronger gusts to the
surface thus eliminating the strong shear. At the moment, not
expecting to hit LLWS criteria at CMX or SAW this TAF period.

Active period the next couple days with multiple gale events. First
one is ongoing over the east half but diminishing right now. Have
left the Gale Warnings in effect for the eastern half as previously
scheduled with those expiring this evening. Winds go light overnight
but quickly ramp up again tomorrow out of the south. With more sable
conditions (warmer air moving in above the water surface) it's
always hard to say exactly how much wind be make it to the surface,
but solid 35-40 kt gusts look likely enough to justify a new Gale
Warning for the central and eastern lake tomorrow afternoon and
evening. After the low responsible for these gales moves by to the
north on Tuesday, winds will veer around to WSW with yet another
gale possible over the west half on Tuesday. Some models even bring
high-end gales over across the whole lake on Tuesday, but did not
feel confident in that happening so kept winds mostly around 30 kts
for now. Breezy NW winds will continue through Wednesday on the east
half before subsiding to generally 20 kts or less for Thursday and
Friday.
