Patchy ground fog is expected to form once again tnt and continue
for a couple hours beyond sunrise. It will be most concentrated
west and south of Madison where a little deeper low level moisture
is present. Otherwise, the polar sfc ridge will slowly shift ewd
across WI into early afternoon with lgt sly winds developing. Low
temps tnt mainly in the single digits away from the lake with high
temps on Wed near seasonal norms.

.SHORT TERM...

Tonight through Wednesday:

High pressure remains in control tonight through Wednesday morning
before it starts to kick east in the afternoon in response to the
incoming system. Clearing skies this evening will help to result
in temps to drop into the single digits. The question is going to
be with the shallow nature of this cool air and lingering
moisture from recent snows is whether any fog develops. Dewpoints
currently sitting in the teens to lower 20s combined with light
winds and the temps falling quickly tonight can expect some fog to
form across central and southern Wisconsin. A bit uncertain if any
will be dense for any fog headlines. Models are trending a bit
more widespread with lower visibilities so confidence is
increasing for dense fog tonight. Clouds should be slow to clear
Wednesday but with winds becoming more southerly expect highs to
be close to what they were today.

Wednesday Night through Thursday Night:

A trough moves out of the Rockies on Thursday and does begin to
take on a slight negative tilt as it moves across the Upper
Midwest Thursday night through Friday. All models are trending
stronger and deeper with this system and we are starting to see
some storm track issues come into play. There is going to be a
very robust upper level jet with Wisconsin solidly in the left
exit region of the jet, which will help with the forcing. The NAM
is the outlier and definitely the most north/north-west with the
low track, this brings in a dry slot and lower QPF estimates. All
other models have the track now across central portions of the
area, which seems to be in line with ensemble suites from the
GEFS/EPS. One notable change has been the increase in QPF with
each subsequent run for most models. This is representative of the
stronger system, better moisture advecting northward, and also
likely hinting at some banding potential.

As the system starts to deepen Thursday morning a N/NE moving warm
front may have just enough forcing and moisture to bring some
mixed precip to the western half of the area. The warm nose ranges
from 2-5C depending on the model but that is in a zone with very
dry air, so as soon as precip begins expect some wet bulbing to
cool that layer. May still have just enough warm air aloft to melt
and then possibly refreeze precip. So, a mixture of freezing rain,
rain, and sleet is possible at the onset. But this would only be
for a brief period Thursday morning with a quick change over to
all snow by mid to late morning. There will be two periods where
we'll have strong frontogenesis over the region, the first being
at the onset and the second when the low tracks through Thursday
evening/night. Will need to watch for some banding potential as
this moves through.

The warmer air aloft leading into the system means the snow-to-
liquid ratios will be low at the onset with 5-7 to 1 ratios,
eventually increasing as colder air moves in to 8-10 to 1, and
then as the Arctic air arrives 13-16 to 1 by Friday morning. That
is going to translate into a wet and heavy snow with the heaviest
bands occurring during the afternoon and evening hours Thursday.
Expect a messy commute Thursday evening. As the Arctic air arrives
overnight it's possible any moisture on the roads could become icy
with lows falling into the single digits.

This is going to be a solid advisory event for the entire area
with some borderline warning level snows in the far north. But due
to the model differences that still exist at this time have held
off on issuing any headlines at this point.

.LONG TERM...

Friday through Tuesday:

Lingering cyclonic flow aloft and low level moisture will likely
keep low clouds and flurries around through Friday morning. The
column remains moist through the dendritic growth zone into early
Friday afternoon. The column starts to dry from top to bottom as
dry, arctic air plunges into the region through Friday evening.

Possible impacts of this cold moving in Friday afternoon is that
any wet/slushy pavement or sidewalks will freeze quickly.

Things will freeze quickly as temperatures drop into the single
digits below zero early Saturday morning. Brisk westerly winds
will yield wind chill values around -17 in the morning and -7
during the day. Cold advection will persist through Sunday morning
as a reinforcing shortwave trough swings through the Upper
Midwest. We could see another round of light, fluffy snow/flurries
with this extra lift, especially toward the IL border. There is
Pacific Northwest moisture to work with, but we will be on the
north side of the system.

Despite the clouds, lows Saturday night should drop to around
-11F with wind chills between -25 and -30. There should be a repeat
 of the snow with another clipper system Sunday night into
 Monday, with yet another morning of similar temps/wind chills.
 One more clipper looks possible Monday night into Tuesday, but
 that one might be a little further south. Temps should be similar
 to Monday.

The Wind Chill Advisory criteria is -20 or lower, so we are
looking at headlines likely for most of southern WI. The
uncertainty would be far southeast WI.

High pressure of 30.3 inches over western Wisconsin will slowly
approach Lake Michigan tonight, gradually moving east of Lake
Michigan late Wednesday afternoon and evening. Modest north winds
will continue tonight but weaken and back to light south winds by
late Wednesday afternoon. Southerly winds will then pick up
Wednesday night into Thursday as the high departs to the east and
low pressure approaches from the west. Southerly winds on Thursday
as the system approaches may approach gale force. Then, as winds
turn westerly behind the low Thursday night into Friday gusts
likely reach gale force. A Gale Watch is in effect for late
Thursday night and Friday for the open waters of Lake Michigan.
A Small Craft Advisory will likely be needed for late Wednesday
night into Thursday evening, then possibly followed by a Gale
Warning for late Thursday night through Friday.

Brisk southerly winds will develop for late Wednesday night
through Thursday evening as strong low pressure approaches. A few
gale force gusts are possible during this time along with large
waves. A Gale Watch is then in effect for late Thursday night and
Friday for all of the open waters of Lake Michigan. Westerly gales
may develop as strengthening low pressure shifts east and north
of Lake Michigan.

Freezing spray will be possible Friday through Monday.

...AREAS OF DENSE FOG AND FREEZING FOG THIS MORNING...

Areas of dense fog and freezing fog are expected this morning
across southwestern Wisconsin. Visibilites may be variable when
traveling in and out of thicker fog, with visibilites dropping
suddenly to one-half to one-quarter mile in spots. Where freezing
fog remains more persistent, slick spots may develop on roads.

Use caution while traveling this morning and allow for extra
travel time.
