Low clouds have cleared all but far southeastern Wisconsin at this
point, but likely won't make much more southeastward progress
overnight. Where skies have cleared, temperatures quickly fell
into the teens and single digits. In addition, fog has developed
in some locations where temperatures have really tanked. Given
such cold temperatures, will need to watch for freezing fog
potential overnight should it become more widespread.

Looking ahead to tomorrow/tomorrow night, much of the 18z model
guidance did push QPF further north into Wisconsin, and a quick
look at the early 00z guidance suggests that the trend continues.
Will let the mid shift have a chance to fully digest the 00z
deterministic runs as well as the ensemble guidance, but it does
appear that chances are increasing for accumulating snow tomorrow
night and Tuesday, especially south of I-94. It still looks like
there will be a sharp northern edge to the snow, so determining
that cutoff will be critical to final snow amounts.

Tonight and Monday:

Snow has quickly moved east of the area this afternoon as a weak
front tracked east across southern Wisconsin. Winds have become
northwest across much of the area, with clearing moving across
portions of south-central Wisconsin. Drier air moving in appears
to be more robust than models are currently forecasting, even with
ceilings coming up much quicker than anticipated. With light
winds veering north to northeast tonight into Monday morning and
skies appearing more likely to clear, did lower temperature a bit.
Given this more robust clearing trend, forecast lows for tonight
could end up getting colder than currently forecast.

On Monday, the drier air moving into the southern Wisconsin over the
next 12 hour or so looks to hold strong as a winter storm develops
off to our south. Did push back the arrival of PoPs along the
southern most row of counties in Wisconsin until late Monday
evening. Albeit much slower, this may still be too quick in bringing
chances for snow this far north. More details below for the
potential for snow Monday night/Tuesday!

.LONG TERM...

Monday night through Tuesday:

Drier air continues to compete with the incoming system on Monday
evening, which has resulted in slowing down the arrival time of
snow. Snowfall is still expected to continue through the Tuesday
morning commute. There is going to be a sharp cutoff in the snow
totals, and where this occurs is still uncertain. Guidance
continues to be inconsistent from run to run and not instilling
much confidence to the forecast. GEFS plumes are showing a large
spread in QPF amounts, from virtually zero at MKE/MSN, to upwards
of 0.5 inches. The ECMWF ensemble guidance has continued to back
off on the probs for QPF greater than 0.5 inches.

Comparing the current forecast to the distribution of guidance
were sitting right around the 50th percentile, which has lead to
something like borderline advisory level snow for far southeastern
Wisconsin. Given the uncertainty that still exists, not confident
in putting out any winter headlines at this time. Any subtle
shift in the track or enhancement of the dry air will do a number
on the snow totals.

The strong ENE/NE winds across southern Wisconsin during this
event continue to be the only real constant. Stronger gusts off
the Lake Michigan into the lakeshore continues is expected. There
will be a potential for some lake enhancement to the snow totals
across our southeastern counties and blowing/drifting snow due to
the winds. There is also a potential for a lakeshore flood
threat. At this time, based on lake levels and water displacement
forecasts, think we may stay just below lakeshore flood advisory
levels.

Tuesday night through Saturday:

Another trough is expected to move across the Midwest on
Wednesday. As the system moves into the Great Lakes Region it will
be lacking moisture and therefore shouldn't produce much in the
way of snow for southern Wisconsin. Lake enhancement/Lake Effect
snow continue to be a concern for Wednesday with the sustained
N/NE winds. Which could increase snowfall potential across
southeastern Wisconsin. Will have to keep an eye on that moving
forward.

High pressure is then expected to move in by Thursday.
Temperatures are expected to be slightly cooler as we approach the
weekend with high temperatures expected to climb into the 20s to
low teens. As we start the weekend, the winds will gradually shift
to southerly which will cause the temperatures to swing back in to
the upper 30s. High pressure is expected to linger in the Great
Lakes Region through Saturday. By Sunday, models try to hint at
another system moving through the Great Lakes Region, so will have
to keep an eye on that through the week as well.

MVFR stratus has pushed south of most of the area, though the
Janesville, Waukesha, and Milwaukee terminals remain right on the
edge. Kenosha remains under the stratus, and likely will remain so
for the night. For those locations right at the edge of the cloud
cover, it's likely that sky cover obs may bounce back and forth
between scattered and broken for much of the night.

Winds turn to the northeast tomorrow, and will become rather gusty
by afternoon. Snow may start to impact the southern terminals,
especially Janesville, Milwaukee, Waukesha, and Kenosha by early
evening. Madison and Sheboygan will remain on the northern edge of
the snow potential. IFR to LIFR is likely with the snow tomorrow
night into Tuesday.

expect winds to become northwesterly this evening and eventually
northerly tonight. Monday morning, north winds veer northeast, in
response to high pressure moves into the Canadian Prairies, while a
stronger surface low develops over the central Plains.

These northeast winds are expected to increase as the surface low
lifts across Illinois/Indiana Monday night into Tuesday morning.
Northeast gales continue to look possible over the southern one-
third of the open waters, thus have issued a gale watch to highlight
this potential. It is possible gales could impact the nearshore
areas south of Milwaukee, but for now will keep the watch in the
open waters only. If gales don't make it into the nearshore, still
expect small craft conditions to develop Monday afternoon through
Tuesday, northeast winds increase and waves build to 8-10 feet.

Northeast winds lessen some Wednesday/Thursday, but remain around 20
knots. Given the longevity of these northeast winds, expect waves
to remain elevated along the nearshore, with small craft conditions
possible.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of east central
Wisconsin, south central Wisconsin and southeast Wisconsin.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

Patchy fog has developed across the northern half of the outlook
area, mainly north of I-94. Some freezing fog will be possible,
with potential slick spots developing on area roadways.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Sunday

A strong low pressure system is expected to track south of
Wisconsin late Monday into Tuesday. This system will bring gusty
winds and the potential for accumulating snow for parts of
southern Wisconsin. Southeast Wisconsin has the best chances to
see accumulating snow from this system. There is some
uncertainty regards to the track of this system and it's strength
as it arrives, thus snowfall amounts. Keep up with the latest
forecasts.

Gusty winds may lead to some blowing snow concerns late Monday
and Tuesday, along with the potential for lakeshore flooding and
erosion along the shoreline of Lake Michigan.
