Some lower visibilities are being observed due to fog this
morning, especially along the WI/IL border with the low nearby
along with light winds. Westerly winds will pick up in the next
few hours along with clouds gradually clearing into this
afternoon. This will allow visibilities to improve with any
lingering fog clearing with the clouds.

Today and Tonight:

The system pushing through this morning will likely push out over
the next few hours with some linger precipitation possible. Given
that we will have lost out ice in the DGZ temperatures will
determine whether that precipitation falls as freezing
drizzle/sleet or just drizzle. Given current temperatures and any
wet bulbing potential we would expect areas across the northern
half of the CWA to receive some freezing drizzle/sleet, perhaps
amounting to as much as a glaze or so. However, by around 12-14z
expect much of the precip to end and with increasing temperatures
into the morning expect much of any lingering precip to become
drizzle. The far north will be the best chance for any additional
ice into the daylight hours with precip chances ending by noon
today. In addition, expect some fog development this morning that
will cause some visibility restrictions. It is uncertain how
dense this might be but it should clear by the early afternoon.

Otherwise this afternoon into tonight will remain mostly dry with
clearing skies in the afternoon and early evening. It may remain a
bit breezy but for the most part quiet. Late tonight we will start
to see another system push in from the southwest with clouds
rolling in ahead of the system.

.LONG TERM...

Tuesday through Sunday:

Another complex winter system is expected to impact the area on
Tuesday. The overall evolution should be fairly similar to what
took place Sunday night/early this morning, with initial snow
(with heavy rates) mixing with and changing to rain across the
south, and snow persisting further north. With the snow falling
during the day, impacts will likely be more widespread than what
we saw last night and early this morning.

Snow is expected to move into areas southwest of Madison Tuesday
morning, quickly expanding across most of the area through mid
day. Rates will be heavy at times--likely on the order of 1 to 2
inches per hour, especially across the northern half of the
forecast area. By afternoon, locations near the Illinois state
line and the lakeshore are expected to transition to a rain/snow
mix or all rain, while snow will persist elsewhere. By early
evening, cloud ice will diminish, with light freezing rain or
freezing drizzle developing across the far northwest, where
temperatures will still be at or below freezing. Further south and
east, rain and drizzle are expected, with temperatures at that
point expected to be in the mid 30s.

Snow amounts are expected to be highest northwest of Madison,
where 2 to 4 inches of snow will be possible. A glaze to tenth of
an inch of ice will also be possible in this area. Snow amounts
then taper to 1 to 3 inches for the Madison to Watertown to West
Bend corridor. Lakeshore areas and locations south of I-94 are
currently expected to receive around an inch or less. Again, much
like last night/this morning, snowfall rates will likely be the
bigger impact, with much of that snow falling within just a few
hours.

Precipitation will end late Tuesday night, with fairly quiet but
cold conditions expected on Wednesday as high pressure noses in
from the northwest. Highs will be in the 20s, though the far
northwest may remain in the teens.

An upper level jet will strengthen across the area Wednesday
night, with one or more bands of snow potentially developing along
the baroclinic zone located across the region. Currently have up
to a half inch of snow in the forecast for this timeframe, though
it's worth mentioning that these weakly forced, banded snow events
can be sneaky, especially with snow ratios. So, it's plausible
that some areas could see higher amounts, though that should be
fairly localized.

Beyond Wednesday night, the next feature of interest is a
potential system impacting the Midwest over the weekend. Most extended
ensembles members depict  the system in some form, though storm
track differs considerably. Ensemble mean is south of the
last few operational GFS runs, which is worth noting. Ultimately
the storm track will depend on how things evolve on Tuesday, and
how far south the colder air makes it Wednesday and Thursday. Lots
of time for things to change/shift, but definitely something to
keep an eye on in the coming days.

IFR to LIFR visibilities and ceilings will gradually improve to
VFR through 21Z as clouds clear. Winds will pick up from the west
this afternoon with gusts around 25 knots before lighter
northwesterly winds move in for tonight. Winds will then shift to
the southeast ahead of our next system expected to move through
Tuesday, bringing with it another round of IFR to LIFR ceilings
with snow changing to rain into Wednesday night.

Breezy southeast winds continue this morning ahead of the
approaching surface low. As this surface low pushes into southern
Wisconsin this morning there will be a decent lull in the winds.
As this exits to the northeast west winds will then pick back up.
Thus we have a Gale warning currently in effect until 9am for the
breezy southeast winds and then another Gale Warning for the
breezy west winds on the backside of the system going from 6pm to
midnight. Despite the lull in winds the Small Craft Advisory will
remain in effect until 2am this morning. In addition, we could see
winds approaching gale force across the far far northern part of
the lake for a brief period from the mid morning to the early
afternoon though we have not issued a Gale Warning for this
period.

Winds will die down overnight tonight but will likely pick up a
bit again Tuesday with another system pushing in. While gales do
not seem likely at this point, southeast gusts across the southern
half of the lake could approach gale force at times. Thereafter
winds look to be a bit quieter across the lake with the next
chance for gales likely coming next weekend.
