Collection of model soundings suggest this low cloud deck will be
stubborn at best today. Temps will no doubt struggle and the
onshore flow won't help matters. All in all going forecast in
decent shape.

.SHORT TERM...
(Issued 319 AM CDT Tue Mar 16 2021)

Today through Wednesday:

Some patchy light wintry precip lingering early this morning along
with patchy fog will diminish through sunrise. Otherwise, weak
high pressure is progged to build across the Western Great Lakes
region today bringing quieter and drier conditions. However,
expect low-level clouds to linger as moisture remains trapped
under an inversion. With the clouds and light northerly flow,
temps today will remain fairly cool with highs only topping off
in the low 40s and overnight temps falling into the upper 20s to
around 30 degrees.

Looking at another cool day on Wednesday with high temps a few
degrees warmer in the mid 40s as weak surface high pressure lingers
over the Great Lakes region. Then the high will slowly slide
eastward as a mid-level closed low over the Northern Plains
becomes an open shortwave trough and progresses across the Upper-
Midwest through the day Wednesday. Low-level frontogenesis
associated with this mid-level wave is progged to have enough
forcing to produce a some light showers Wednesday afternoon across
portions of southwest WI. Not expecting much in the way of QPF as
EPS, GEFS, and HREF ensemble members are barely registering
anything above a few hundredths of an inch.

.LONG TERM...
(Issued 319 AM CDT Tue Mar 16 2021)

Wednesday Night and Thursday:

Low pressure currently over the southwest CONUS remains on track
to get ejected into the southern and central Plains late tonight
and Wednesday. With a weak split flow regime across the Upper
Midwest, the low is expected to track mostly E-NE and cross from
the central/lower MS Valley region into the TN Valley region late
Wednesday night and Thursday. This track is slightly south of
where the Medium Range guidance had shown about 24 hours ago.
With this track, the axis of heavier QPF north of the low should
remain in northern IL during this period. Never the less, southern
WI looks to remain on the northern periphery of the lighter
precipitation shield and may yet receive a period of light rain
and snow Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Greater than 50%
of the Global Ensemble Forecast System and ECMWF Ensemble QPF
plumes show light QPF of 0.1 to 0.4 tenths across southern WI, so
wl keep chance Pops going most areas. Enhanced lift from right
entrance region of upper jet wl contribute to the larger
precipitation shield to the north of this system as well. Top
Down and Energy ptype methods both indicate a potential for a
rain/snow mix as the atmosphere cools slightly Wednesday night
into Thu morning. Hence a period of wet snow will again be
possible, but confidence remains low on timing of ptype changeover
and low level thermal structure. Precipitation chances decrease
later Thursday as the low pressure system continues to move east
through the TN/OH Valley region.

Thursday Night through Monday:

Amplifying high pressure ridge across the central CONUS on
Thursday will expand into the Upper Midwest and western Great
Lakes Thursday night. This will continue to nudge the low pressure
system well to the southeast of WI farther east Thursday night as
it loses it's grip of the western Great Lakes. Hence subsidence
and the return of drier air in the low to mid levels associated
with building ridge will contribute to dry conditions returning to
all of southern WI Thursday night and continuing into Sunday. The
Medium range guidance is in agreement on this ridge breaking down
ahead of a long-wave trough moving slowly east through the
western CONUS over the weekend. This will result in the steering
winds turning more to the south which will allow warmer low level
air to surge into the area. 925H temps rise to 8 to 10C on Sunday
and Monday. Daytime temps should rise into the upper 50s to lower
60s both days, but turning cooler close to the lake each day. A
bit more cloudiness is expected on Monday as low pressure and a
cold front strengthen in the northern Plains. This system may
eventually bring some showers to the area Monday night into
Tuesday. So have no fear, warmer temperatures will be returning to
the area by next week.

Plenty of LIFR cigs with some IFR and pockets of MVFR as well.
This low cloud cover may show some subtle improvements but it will
likely hang with us for much of the day and into the evening
hours. MOS guid shows some pretty rapid improvement in these cigs
but for now thinking it may be a slower road. Next system starts
to approach on Wednesday so some light rain may try to work into
the area during the afternoon hours.

Expect light northerly winds across Lake Michigan as high pressure
builds over the Western Great Lakes Region today into Wednesday.
Then winds and waves will increase Wednesday night into Thursday as
low pressure tracks into the Ohio River Valley on Thursday. The
tighter pressure gradient will bring another period of gusty
northeasterly winds and the potential for gales mainly for the
southern half of Lake Michigan Thursday into Thursday night.
